I have successfully installed Slackware, zero times. It is not the lack of trying either, but it seems either the hardware I use was incompatible or I always happen to trigger some edge type bug when compiling. I know Slackware now has packages and can be more easily installed, but in a recent attempt even that failed to load (black screen, no grub menu). The closest I have gotten to Slackware was using a distro based off of Slackware, and even that would not let me resize my screen resolution or discover my Wi-Fi.

I was unsure in the beginning how OS/2 would fair. But after Windows 95, I knew they had lost. OS/2 still had you loading programs from folder directories, while Windows had their start menu, and as small as that was, I knew it was a game changer. OS/2 I remember included an app menu in an update, but it wasn't as polished and it was already losing ground. BeOS I knew right away was going to go nowhere. That said, I am still surprised that Haiku, originally OpenBeOS, is still holding on. I am really curious on who uses that and why. lol

Switch to Next DNS and you can load AdGaurd's ad and spam filters. Free Download Manager is exactly like IDM, but for Linux. However, they've discontinued their RPM packages for some reason, and now only support DEB. That would be great if you were using, for example, Kubuntu (Ubuntu KDE).

I was not focused on the browser, because I wanted a download manager that worked in anything (Firefox or Chromium). uGet does not work. The extension also does not seem like it has a future: "This extension may soon no longer be supported because it doesn't follow best practices for Chrome extensions."

What finally "ticked me off" (upset me) was the fact that after buying my movie, it was removed because of geo partnership restrictions. The movie will likely return to my inventory, once their streaming rights have expired with someone, as I have experienced this before. But the whole point in making a purchase is being able to own and watch my movie whenever I wish.
IN before someone says, the word "purchase" does not mean what I and others think it does. I do not believe a corporate has the right to change the English language, regardless of their terms of services or user agreements. This from the same corporation that tried to argue someone could not sue them for a wrongful death because, years ago, they subscribed to a Disney Plus trial membership. Not everything written in black and white should be respected as moral, ethical, or even seen as legal.

The fall of Mandriva gave me the opportunity to be upset with SUSE as a company. It is something that was true then and remains true now. SUSE is slow to act.
SUSE had already established itself on the enterprise market. There were already ongoing discussions of having SUSE Linux bundled with PCs. And those talks continued throughout the success of Mandrake, and continued still when people were desperately looking for an alternative away from the eventual failing Mandrivia. SUSE would eventually make into stores on prebuild desktops, but they waited so long that by the time they did, most folks (home users) had an "ick" when they thought of Linux.
I often think how different things would have been if SUSE was not so damn slow to act.

My 2nd Linux distro that I truly enjoyed was Mandrake Linux, which would later become Mandriva Linux (a fusion of the French distribution Mandrake Linux and the Brazilian distribution Conectiva Linux).
I was so convinced of Mandrake's success, that I imagined we'd all be using Linux, today. When they became Mandriva, which was poorly managed, and not nearly as quality controlled in development, I truly felt let down and disappointed.

My 1st Linux distro that I used regularly was SUSE Linux. I would play with Debian on and off, but SUSE, I thought, was where the future was at.
I also remember the 1st time SUSE became a paid distro and the unimaginable backlash they received from within the Linux ecosystem. I suppose it was expected. You had a complete ecosystem of users and developers who believed in free and open source software. The idea of a business uses this as a paid product did not sit well with many.
But I also found it a bit of a double standard, that the next one to do so, Red Hat, oddly was embraced with open arms, as if what they were doing was not the same thing as SUSE (which they were).
I guess being the 1st to do this meant you were always going to be looked down upon.

I would have a "WTF" type moment when Debian came out. I remember thinking, wow, this grew quickly in a short amount of time. But even then I was still not 100% convinced. It would not be until SUSE came out, who at the time truly worked on the GUI side of things, that I realized that Linux may indeed have a future. But the day I knew I was absolutely wrong, was when I walked into my local Wiz Store (what would become, Best Buy) and Radio Shack, with desktops selling with Mandrake Linux pre-installed and PC Magazine talking about the Linux revaluation. I truly felt like I had egg on my face that day.

Young me, didn't like that at the time, you needed an already working system to compile this onto a disk, because Linux originally had no installer. Furthermore, as someone who grew up with Dos, Dr-dos, Pc-dos, and early Ms-dos, the idea of an operating system functioning solely in a terminal, seemed like a step backward when GUI was becoming mainstream. I truly thought the Os was dead on arrival, and his pet project was only ever go to be a one-off, and if it grew in any sense, something niche most folks would never hear about or use.
I clearly was wrong and did not foresee Linux's future.

4) Universal Blue Bazzite (KDE)
Also, an immutable distro, but idea for the individual who want more than just the basics included. This distro targets home and gamers and aims to be a drop replacement for Steam Deck. When asked, do you want the "Steam Gaming Mode" I would suggest you answer, no, since I imagine you will want to use your PC as a desktop. Answering, yes, changes the user interface, and limits you to only one user. But when answering, no, you will still have all the gaming tools and tweaks.
I normally try to avoid suggesting a Linux distro which some people may describe as having bloat. But this one does not necessarily go to extremes, choosing to keep focus on their target (a desktop for gamers), and is generally well managed. It is also an immutable, which I think is something you will want if you're going to accept a distro that includes more than the basics.
5) Fedora Kinoite (Fedora KDE Immutable)
They could have just called this, Fedora KDE Immutable, or perhaps, Fedora Silver Blue KDE, but someone in the marketing department came up with, Kinoite. I near always forget the name, and have to look it up all the time (good development, bad marketing department).
Once again, for those who may have their reasons for preferring purely free open source content, going directly to the original source may be your answer. You will still have a basic functional desktop (not just a terminal), built around KDE. And this will be an immutable distro which will manage itself if you wish, with you ideally relying on the App Store.

5 Linux distro I recommend and why.
1) Ultramarine Linux (KDE Plasma)
This is the perfect basic Linux distro for both newbies, moderate, and advanced users, who are looking to have a functional desktop from the start, but who do not want bloat. Ultramarine is based on Fedora, but includes the basic non-free media codecs, firmware, drivers, and repositories preconfigured - that's it. Unlike many other distros, they're not trying to bundle apps, products, or services they think you may like, and only giving you the basics to start with, which means you do not need to remove bloat from your PC.
Why KDE Plasma?
KDE is one of the longest running desktop developments within the Linux ecosystem (since 1998, then called K Desktop Environment). The development is well polished and mature, while focusing on general ease of use (user-friendly). Today's KDE desktop is similar to a Windows 7 / Windows 10 Ltsc desktop, with a settings manger (control panel) easily consolidated into a single interface that you can manage with your mouse.
2) Fedora KDE Plasma Spin
Ultramarine is based on Fedora, and the only substantial difference is Ultramarine has preconfigured all your non-free goodness for you. But for those who want to get their hands dirty or perhaps have reasons for preferring purely free open source content, going directly to the original source may be your answer. You will still have a basic functional desktop (not just a terminal), built around KDE.
3) Universal Blue Aurora
Aurora is an Immutable Linux Distribution. Unlike a normal Linux distro, you're more reliant on apps from the App Store (Flatpak apps). The OS is designed for people who want to use their PC and wish to worry less about maintaining their PC. It performs automatic updates and automatic recovery should something fail. While you can install software from a repo and 3rd party RPM packages if needed, the goal of the OS is to rely on the system managing itself and having you rely on the App Store.
Aurora is comparable to Ultramarine. They have already included all the non-free goodness and because it is an immutable OS, it will manage itself. Aurora also uses, KDE for your easy-to-use, stable desktop environment.
An Immutable distro is also the idea desktop for senior citizens and those with learning disabilities. Speaking personally, as someone who often plays the role of free tech support to aging family members, including a few who are disabled, I recommend an immutable distro. It will manage itself, and is almost impossible for someone to break unless they have some technical skill to do so.
Aurora comes in two flavors, Home and DX (developer). Beyond just development, if you plan on using any visualization, I would suggest the DX build. They are nearly identical, but the DX build comes with some extra tools. I found the DX build is better optimized for Virtual Machines.

I like Sharkey. It offers more features and even allows me to back up my account, which, if needed, I could port elsewhere, losing nothing. But I have been considering going back to Mastodon. 🤔
One of the problem with Sharkey is I notice fewer engagements compared to Mastodon. For example, I have my @npub1rzs…e5yc which is mostly Japanese users on Vivaldi Dot Social (check the local feed). I have only 20+ follows and Vivaldi Dot Social, being a corporate (business) platform, means they do not Fedi with every server (bit more selective). Yet the few posts I shared there, which were mostly copy and paste from here, were liked and shared more often. It is not just there, that I have seen this, but I am using that instance as an example, because ideally it should be less successful.
On that note, many of the Sharkey instances, like the corporate instance from Vivaldi, really are picky on who they Fedi with. I joined a Sharkey instance because I heard how Sharkey could connect with more APIs than Mastodon, but many of those instance do not benefit from that because they're so selective. A fact as to why I joined Kitty Dot Social, because the admin here is awesome, and will connect with anyone (including Threads).
I am also talkative (very talkative). I spend 8–12 hours (sometimes 14–16) on the internet, because it's my job. I work remotely from home as a "Consumer content administrative manager", removing nonsense found elsewhere, that no one should see (trust me). The Fediverse has always been a distraction from when work either became stressful, dull (slow), and generally a momentary escape from the madness. On a small Fedi instance, I could easily dominate the local timeline without trying. Most Mastodon instances appear busier, so I tend to blend in, as opposed to dominating someone's local feed (sorry, if this is you).
A lot of the Sharkey instance are smaller, but they're also dramatic. Disagree with someone's father's brother's nephew's cousin's former roommate, and watch how fast an admin on another instance, who've you've never spoken with, suddenly is all moody with you. 🤣
Technologically, I have never found a single Sharkey instance that did not experience 502 errors. They all do, including the flagship instance. These issues are temporary, but it seems like whenever something I felt there was value in sharing (not just shitposting) or something started to trend, that is when I experienced the issue.
I like the platform (software). I like the features and layout and the function and form. I like the design and all the little ways I can engage when using Sharkey. But it is falls short where I notice and once seen cannot easily unsee.

All joking aside, I too, once stuck around until the bitter end with Netscape back in the day, so you have my sympathy. But the reality is your web browser experience has been and will continue to degrade with time.
The browser wars are over, and even government websites are not paying attention to Firefox / Gecko in terms of support. The most recently example of this was America's IRS Tax website during tax season (it was eventually fixed). You're going to see that happen more frequently, since Firefox's market share is just above 2% (two percent).
But if you're one of those people who want to hold onto Firefox (Gecko) until the bitter end, I would suggest Floorp. Some people like Zen Browser, which is a fork of Floorp (but I am always cautious when you have a fork of a fork). This will provide you a Vivaldi Browser-like experience while using Firefox. The advantage is if Firefox ever goes "bye-bye" and you are forced to move on, you'll have less of a learning curve and moving to Vivaldi Browser later would be easier.

3:36 AM EST. I have insomnia, and there are two kinds of insomnia. The 1st is those people who feel sleepy, but cannot sleep, and are grateful when they do. The 2nd is those few who just do not feel tired, and that would be me. I can go days without rest and be perfectly fine. The drawback is, when I do feel sleepy, I have no problems sleeping, and that can be a problem if I end up sleepy midday. I don't pass out (thankfully), but I do look silly trying to keep myself going.

Control in this picture is not great. He is living in what was my grandpa's home and the place is in trust and the trustee, my aunt, would very much like to sell the place. Especially since the place is costing her a bit, and he has little money (disabled on social security).
That cable bill at the moment, he cannot afford, and I wasn't going to pay for it, so she did. I am trying to keep some peace, so the moron will not either end up homeless or in an old folks home, maybe. The only reason she's been paying for that cable is to keep her peace, because that moron will call you endless if he is bored -no boundaries. The boundary issue and his self-awareness is part of his mental illness, which is only amplified by the fact that he is also an asshole.
The Roko I am paying for along with all the streaming services, because it will not cost me extra. I'm just going to let him use my accounts, and I can because it is all using T-Mobile Internet (they cannot tell the difference from location). He will only need to pay 25 buck a month for the internet (which he has).

I am supposed to visit my biological father today, and help him re-setup his Roku. Somehow he killed the remote, and so I ordered him a new remote. I got him the Pro Edition so it could be charged, and he wouldn't keep opening it up to check the batteries.

The fact that he lies and makes things up, does not help you easily figure out if he is lying or imagining things. I also dislike his indecisiveness, and he can seldom make up his own damn mind.
Tonight, the day before I am to visit, he calls me up talking about how he is convinced that putting the Roku on the "wrong" HDMI port could break his TV. It obviously will not, and there is nothing wrong with his TV. Although I do suspect that the "cable guy" has convinced him otherwise, plus I suspect he may not be 100% wanting to give up his cable TV either (which he does NOT pay for). The Roku is going onto HDMI-1 and his cable box is being pulled. He will additionally also have an HD TV Antenna (that will be HDMI-2).
But experiencing him act like he knows better or some random "cable guy" knows better, when I am the one who has done this 100x and I know the technology, is infuriating. Especially, since I keep spending money on trying to make it so he will have a TV, and am I going to his place on my day off. I could think of other things I'd rather be doing and things I'd rather be buying.

In my book, Firefox has been canceled.
At one time, people were begging Mozilla to improve Firefox. Tech News articles and publications, talking how we needed Firefox, and encouraging people to help further the development. There was no shortage of people wanting to help Mozilla.
Mozilla ignored the masses. Laid off developers. Gave their CEO a pay raises. Then became an ad company, which impact everyone, even if you do not use Firefox.

If you can suggest a USB Bluetooth Adaptor (nothing internal), I'd be willing to try it out. Otherwise, I and many others will see this as a Linux problem. Because I doubt everyone I know is exclusively using Realtek. 😅

I 1st noticed the problem around Fedora 39 and ignored it, because it only happens when you either cold boot or reboot. I wrongfully presumed it would be fixed, and it isn't like I power off or reboot often.
The problem, however, is now impacting the Linux ecosystem. By that I mean, Fedora, Debian, Arch, openSUSE, Kubuntu, etc... etc... And it isn't just me anymore either, rather people I know are now experiencing this issue too. - Minus, of course, the few randoms like yourself, that says, all is well. lol

If it were a drive issue, I would expect it to never work or drop connection or lag. It works, just fine, once you've logged into your computer the 1st time. You can even log out and back in. The lock screen works too. It is only from a cold boot or reboot, that you need a 2nd keyboard.

I understand how Linux works, but I also understand the experience. It previously worked in every Linux distro, and then it did not and has not since. Where that change has taken place is debatable (I don't know). I'm sort of new to using Bluetooth on my PC, if honest.
What I know, Bluetooth worked on Linux, Windows, and Apple, just fine. Then something changed, and now it only works on Windows and Apple, with Linux being the issue.

As I have said in another post (in this thread), it was not always like this. That change appears to have been done on purpose, and you used to be able to log into your PC. How else would someone with a Bluetooth keyboard use their PC? It makes it useless the way it is now.

Every once in a while, Linux, does something to hinder its progress as a desktop.
Linux has a Bluetooth issue. But it did not always have a Bluetooth issue. Originally, you could reboot your computer, and log into your PC with your Bluetooth keyboard. You did not need a 2nd keyboard.
When Linux self-destructs, it seems like an inside job. Development be like: "Ssshh. 🤫 It's just going to be this way now. Shut up and accept it."

The 1st line is written out in phonic spelling. Open any dictionary, and beside your word of choice, you'll see how it supposedly pronounced (phonically). The 2nd line (which is the 1st line in its correct form) is what we should have been taught from the start. But yea, I have a lot of things to say about public education. lol

It was indeed. Imagine your teacher writing on the chalkboard:
"The big brau̇n kau̇ jəmp(ed) ˈō-vər the mün an(d) the kyüt smȯl kat wäch(ed) with wən-dər."
Breaking that down for you and having everyone sound it out, write it out, which caused you to learn this, only for that teacher than write out:
"The big brown cow jumped over the moon and the cute small cat watched with wonder."
And repeat the lesson while going into detail why this is actually the correct method.

"Hooked on Phonics" which is completely different from what my school did. The learning program "hooked on phonics" was a play on words (marketing), but actually taught how things were truly read and spelled. My class, actually, focused on phonic spelling then somehow expected us to learn the correct method afterward. It was a dumb idea and even today, I do not understand their logic on how they thought that would be an effective teaching method.

I joke, but in truth, in school they had this crazy idea to teach my class phonetics first. It was a dumb idea. 🙄 If you do not know what phonetic spelling is, open up a dictionary, and you will see how the word is correctly spelled and beside it how it sounds. For a simple example, "cat" you may see as "kat".
I took to phonetics very quickly and very easily. And if the English language actually was written how it sounds, I would have been just fine. It is not, and what I learned could not be unlearned.
Two (2) things happen from that experience.
First, and foremost, I am a big advocate for educators following lesson plans and not making things up on a whim. Furthermore, I believe in educators being reviewed and judged by their results and ineffective educators should not remain in their positions. Second, as a child I spent a fair amount of time needing special education, because I kept reverting to my phonetic lessons. I am thankful that I mostly recovered, but even today, I am not 100%. For example, the word "language" without a spell checker, I am nearly always guaranteed to botch (mess up). For the life of me, I cannot even commit that damn word to long term memory.

Mozilla Firefox cannot hope to recover. -- Why?
You have to understand, the normal (average) home user, just wants something that works. They do not care how it works, why it works, just that it does.
You and I, we can tell people how bad Google is until we're blue in the face. People know with certainty, that large corporations like Google or Apple, make money spying on you and selling your data. But Google and Apple offers products and services that work for them and while on principle they may tell you they care about their privacy, in practice they will turn a blind eye, so long as it gives them something they want (especially for free).
Firefox is never getting back those users. They're gone. Every time a significant group of them considered switching back, Firefox pushed out updates that made the browser worse, and took forever to address the problem. Today, if you tell someone to try Firefox, there is an "ick" factor. The brand is tarnished.
This left mostly power users, who truly gave a damn. These people were willing to ignore the issues, conflicts, and general disappointment, so long as Firefox provided a sense of privacy and security. Today, Mozilla is a marking company, incorporating ad tracking into Firefox, emending A.I., while working with Meta. The very things these people were trying to avoid, and the only people left who kept Firefox relevant.
Lastly, Mozilla was holding on by thread, and now that Google's partnership with Mozilla is legally in jeopardy, Mozilla stands to lose 81% of their annual (yearly) revenue.
I know what you're thinking -- "But I can use a fork of Firefox." -- All those forks (LibreWorlf, for example), are only soft forks that follow and rely on Firefox's development. If Firefox goes, so do they. None of them have expressed an interest to become a hard fork (independent).
Gecko, the engine under Firefox, is not something to easily code around, which is why there were only ever a handful of soft forks to begin with, while by comparison, you can easily find many Chromium clones. Blink, the engine under Chromium, is easier to develop around. Furthermore, it is easier to strip something, than it is to create something new.
The end is nigh (near) for Mozilla Firefox.

Google is a prime example of what happens when government regulators turn a blind eye to monopolies and oligopolies. Especially, when "business as usual" has gone on for so long, that some people and businesses, this is all they know, as it is incorporated into everyday life.
Business wise, I doubt most people would care if Apple could no longer be paid by Google to continue to use them as the default search. But a company like, Mozilla, the developers of Firefox, have depended on such revenue to keep them going.

My aunt, my biological father's sister (1 of 2), passed away three weeks ago. She was cremated and tomorrow is the service. I did not know her very well (mostly because she lived far away), but in recent years, we had kept in touch and she seemed like a nice person. She passed away due to cancer.
Today, I donated 2k toward cancer research in her name. I plan on giving the certification to my cousin after the services.

Arch based Linux distros would be my 2nd choice, provided you did not use the AUR. Most of the performing a "sudo pacman -Syu" worked just fine without issues. It was only ever after I started using AUR that I would experience odd issues.

I am someone who used to be very pro-Debian, but since escaping that ecosystem, I have learned just how awful it was.
"sudo apt dist-upgrade" (DEB) will likely give you all sorts of trouble, while "sudo dnf upgrade --allowerasing" (RPM) will be just fine.
Even if you're not the type of individual looking to perform a full system upgrade, and you're just sticking to "sudo apt upgrade" or perhaps "sudo aptitude safe-upgrade" you're likely to run into either dependency issues or conflicts that will break things, or experience held back packages. You've likely needed to use "sudo apt install -f" or perhaps "sudo dpkg --configure -a" along with "sudo dpkg -l | grep ^..R" more times than you care to recall.
For server, DEB based distros are still a very solid system, but for a desktop, RPM based seems to be the way to go.
I kept distro hoping for over a decade. While I liked Linux, I always felt like "something" was missing, but I could never figure out what that "something" was.
Turns out, the thing, I low-key was seeking and not realizing was not having to keep tweaking or fixing my desktop computer, between updates or newly installed apps. -- I have not needed to worry about all that nonsense since moving to an RPM based distro.
