There is a guy across the street who has been using a leaf blower on the footpath/verge on and off for four days in a row.
He was at it for 2 hrs yesterday. There was not a leaf in sight by the time he was done.
He was at it when I left the house this morning. He's back at it now.
It's just rained; the leaves and ground are wet
He's also doing it in front of the 3 houses closest to his.
I am starting to wonder if this guy is okay?
But also the noise. It is very annoying

I am trying to read more climate fiction and solar punk this year, so I welcome recommendations. So far I've read Cory Doctorow's The Lost Cause and Annalee Newitz's Terraformers.
On my list to read is:
Kim Stanley Robinson -The Ministry For The Future and
Omar El Akkad - American War
I could use a few more.

Made the mistake of starting Kim Stanley Robinson's Minsitry For The Future right before bed last night. The opening chapters are not conducive to sleep. Mass death from climate change followed by dense prose on Paris Agreement and its implications.
Going to go read some reviews before I decide whether I can actually handle this book - mental health-wise - right now.

Sometimes it is such a trip talking to my boomer parents. My mom's dad went from one odd job to another all his life and raised eight kids on a single salary - they were not rich. When my mom and her first husband got married right after high school they were given a house by her older sister and her sister's husband. A spare house they had bought as an investment "But it was run down and in a scary, bad part of town, you should have seen it." Yeah, no, this does not at all compute for me.

This mentality of "audiences won't get your NZ references" is so weird to me as a reader of #SFF because I start a book and it's like "I don't know how to pronounce any of these names or places and I don't understand a bunch of these terms, oh well, I'll just guess at pronunciation and figure out the rest from context"
Only with a real culture, you could just do a quick Google search if you're curious?

I just processed the garlic - after putting it in the garage to dry for a few weeks. Twenty one cloves in all. They are small, but should keep us in garlic for a while.
Process = Stems removed. Roots removed. Dirty outer layer of skin removed. Stored in egg crates in the pantry.
This is a hardneck garlic - it has a single row of cloves around a central stem, making it less fiddly to use than softneck (which is your typical grocery store variety).

Just want to acknowledge, for those of us still trying to be covid safe, the enormous mental load this has involved. The constant taking in of new information, adapting to a fluid situation as information and circumstances change. Digesting that information and making a plan that made sense for ourselves and our families. And increasingly having to do that research ourselves and do what we can to share it with each other rather than rely on advice from the government.

This is a South facing fence a few meters from a stream, which I'm guessing gets little or no sunshine. In Lower Hutt.

My raised bed process so far:
1) mow grass extra short.
2) measure out the borders and mark corners with sticks.
3) cardboard layer. 2 layers of flattened boxes, so 4 layers of cardboard total.
4) scavenge old bricks lying around the back garden and place around the edges to form a border.
(I do not recommend the bricks with holes, weeds will love them. But I ran out of the no-hole ones.)

What I am harvesting right now. The carrots grew fat but not very long. And I know this variety can grow a lot longer. I think the soil must have been too dense once they got a little way down.
I usually grow rocket but this Fall I sewed wild arugula seeds that I had harvested right off the plant in the community garden. Someone told me it's more hearty and slower to bolt, and so far this has been the case.

I got most of my mini black popcorn harvested a couple days ago, before the rain set in. 21 ears so far and there are 2 plants I haven't gotten to yet. These guys are small, about 1/4 the size of the ears of sweetcorn you get at the grocery store.
