This mentality of "audiences won't get your NZ references" is so weird to me as a reader of #SFF because I start a book and it's like "I don't know how to pronounce any of these names or places and I don't understand a bunch of these terms, oh well, I'll just guess at pronunciation and figure out the rest from context"
Only with a real culture, you could just do a quick Google search if you're curious?
