oftentimes, especially before 1984 and the advent of desktop
publishing, what you’re looking at may not be a “font”, especially if it’s on a sign, in a logo, and so forth: before ubiquitous digital typography it was often much cheaper and easier to pay someone to hand draw small amounts of lettering. The sign painters and lettering artists were so skilled it looked like a “font”.

I feel like actually, a grand bulk of how “front-end” works now is interesting workarounds for browser limitations that don’t exist anymore.
but because change is expensive we just kinda kept using the elaborate workarounds despite not needing them

I’m not sure how to say this but WASM isn’t a cheap way to avoid “needing to” write javascript. You use wasm when you need to optimise a slow core loop (most commonly, bitcoin mining); or when you have an existing codebase you are trying to port.
If starfing with no wasm; and add wasm, you’re adding the complexity of a build targeting an unstable api surface, to create opaque blobs that more likely than not will wind up unmodifiable in 3 years as the build tool chain used to create it bitrots

so Display Postscript is an awesome little system used in NeXT and NeWS OS: it’s a way nicer system than Xwindows.
When Apple purchased NeXT snd wanted to make it into their OSX for Macs, they decided the licensing fees for Display Postscript were too much, so they built Quartz to replace it; which was the same API but without the forth-like stack language attached.
then Apple created the html5 Canvas API which was just javascript bindings to quartz

i feel like a usage for generative neural networks that i keep waiting for, but sadly don’t see a whole lot of energy for; is real time or near real time fluffing up of 3d renders. Like, imagine google earth zooming in and doing an image 2 image transform of a heightfield using street view images as a reference for generating novel views.
Or creating a lofi 3d model and “texturing” it by painting over several views, and rather than uv mapping the paintings, “deep faking” them onto new renders

has it ever occurred to you that flash card memory cells are very much *like* the battery backed ram of old NES and gameboy cartridges? the main difference is they replace the single watch battery with many many miniaturised silicon based capacitors.

Bars, cafes where we’re expected to buy mind altering drugs whether we want them or can afford them? school or work where socialization is highly discouraged? the parks and other public areas where police and guards heavily scrutinise you if you’re outside conformity?
