Ok so... I'm watching this TV show. I believe it takes place in 1989. All these dudes are walking around with pagers. I remember this technology. It's why Kim Possible says "call me, beep me, if you wanna reach me." But I've never actually used one.
It seems as though you have this device that you keep on you and it beeps if... someone wants to talk to you? So then you go to the nearest payphone and... call them? But does the number pop up on the pager and that's how you know who to call? Everyone can't be at their home phone all the time...

Yeah. I know one woman who decided she was going to leave her teaching job in China. She basically had to smuggle herself out of there. The plane ticket she bought for herself mysteriously ceased to exist. Luckily her mom was able to buy her one while she was at the airport.

That sounds on brand lol. I know these two women in particular who live together now but even before they moved in together they seemed to go out of their way to be miserable 24/7. Complaining about everything yet doing nothing about it. Anyway, now they both don't have jobs, claim to be too anxious to even consider searching for new ones because "why rush to be exploited workers again?", and their families are both paying their NYC rents. Then they both message me separately about how much they dislike the other. I am looking forward to the conclusion of this particular storyline.

I've noticed that all the people I knew in college who now claim to be communists are all the people who... are not very community friendly. As in, they never pull their own weight in a group setting and they always want their own separate everything (bedroom, bathroom, kitchen... house... popcorn at the movies). But then on top of that they don't want to go to work anymore because "it's a capitalist scam."

Upon reflection, I think it's pretty bizarre that at the international relations summer camp I went to, they decided to take us all to the Saudi Arabian embassy for a day. Like... out of all the embassies in Washington DC. I think with pop groups in general, you're going to see companies position them to take on more or less defined characters that they're marketed as. I think the most blatant example would be the Spice Girls as it's baked into all their stage names (Sporty Spice, Ginger Spice, Scary Spice, Posh Spice, Baby Spice). While I've heard of "girl crush" as a group/individual concept (which I just equated to anything vaguely leaning in the tomboy direction, something very easy in something that is so deliberately hyperfeminine) typical official K-pop roles are...
- The Leader (typically the oldest member)
- The Visual (the prettiest one)
- The Rapper (self explanatory)
- Lead Dancer / Main Dancer (self explanatory)
- Lead Vocal / Main Vocal / Sub Vocal (self explanatory)
- The Youngest (self explanatory)
Without looking up Itzy's fandom profile, from what I've seen of them I'd break it down into...
- Yeji (leader)
- Ryujin (rapper)
- Chae...something (dancer)
- Lia (vocal)
- Yuna (youngest)
Groups used to always have just one rapper but since hip-hop is so popular these days now you've got groups that have more rappers than singers (like BTS). Vocalists used to get a lot more attention but in past years have been pushed aside as all the music programs now allow lip syncing and companies focus on giving their groups difficult choreographies which also means they're looking for strong dancers to cast in their groups. But once you start winning music shows and need to sing live for the encore, that's when vocal appreciation comes in and if a new popular group bombs their encore stages, there's usually a lot of criticism. Doesn't stop them from being wildly popular though. There's a group called Twice that sells out stadiums at home and abroad and basically none of them can actually sing.
I'm not in the know on "queer baiting" discourse but I can say that two K-pop idols only need to breathe the same air as each other once before some segment of the population will start shipping them together. And I don't think that's limited to K-pop either. I think I've gotten a hint of at least some of that in anything any notable amount of women become interested in. There's even fan fiction out there about Formula 1 drivers which I found out during my five second foray into Tumblr after choosing Formula 1 as an interest. But yes if a company knows that certain pairing of people are popular, they'd likely be more inclined to send them out together for a variety show appearance even if they secretly hate each other.
I think in the grand scheme of things, Itzy's entire concept was intended to be "girl crush" along with pretty much any girl group that wears pants more than skirts. One friend of mine who is more keyed into current K-pop was calling a different group refreshing because they "broke the girl crush trend." Meanwhile it would never occur to me to call a group that in the first place.

I do remain... a little surprised by the legitimate religious fervor of TRAs. It's my assumption that secularism is still relatively new as a widespread thing. Even in democracies that claim to be secular at their core - like the United States - it has remained a decidedly Christian and Christian influenced area of the world. And I feel like current polarization probably has something to do with a secular component of the population solidifying to have its own religion-like moral code (thus creating the possibility of blasphemy). So whereas before you had one religion surrounded by some percentage of non-religious participants not particularly concerned so long as they could go about their own individual business, now you have two religions that seemingly have ties to considerable power and influence that are opposed on many things... one of which being how they want to go about harvesting women to maintain their way of life. So the result is me and those who share my opinions kind of feeling like this is some monkey in the middle game where obviously we have our stances but lack the religious fervor that seems like the only way to get listened to anywhere.

In the era of the New Republic, the newly formed Galactic Senate fell into two unofficial political parties. The Populists favored planetary sovereignty over the authority of the central government (much like the Separatists during the Clone War). The Centrists favored the overall authority of a centralized government over independent factions.
Basically, once the rebels blew up the bulk of the Imperial governing body, Operation Cinder was launched giving most remaining Imperial fleets the order to go full scorched earth on whichever planets they controlled before going out in a blaze of glory in a final battle over Jakku. The ruins of that battle ended up creating the local scrapping economy there which formed the basis for Rey's entire childhood.
The fleets that weren't given that directive (the most fanatic and loyal followers of the Emperor) were instead given a remote location out in the Unknown Regions to go to where they would spend the next few decades forming what would later become the First Order and procreating with each other to create a super insane Hitler Youth Club that Kylo Ren would eventually bully during his temper tantrums.
Meanwhile back in the center of the galaxy, the New Republic makes itself official mainly amongst the core worlds and the inner rim systems. While these planets benefitted the most from Imperial rule prospering economically (the mid and outer rim systems were destroyed through being harvested for all their raw materials and fell under martial law) the wealth of the upper class remained undisturbed in the power switch. Imperial factories became New Republic factories with just a change of signage. Slavery went from being officially allowed back to being unofficially allowed.
Under the New Republic, the outer rim fell into chaos. Martial law disintegrated overnight and Imperial troops were replaced by pirates and organized crime rings. Some systems became small fiefdoms for Imperial remnants run by Imperial officers-turned-warlords, the ones who ignored Operation Cinder and weren't selected to help form the First Order. But those remnants were largely unstable and fell within a few years. Moff Gideon from the Mandalorian series was one of those warlords.
So the mid and outer rim joined the New Republic with their own senate representatives slowly but surely. Still, many of those officials were loyal to the former Empire or simply thought the New Republic was shit and wanted to participate in this new central government as little as possible. These are the senators who primarily made up the Populists.

The common counter-argument is that while an ideal is one thing, the reality is another. Which I do understand. But the ideas proposed as a result of that argument don't seem to be doing anyone any good.
Then there's the people frothing at the mouth like the KKK just rolled in and are vaporizing black people just at the very mention of "color blindness."

In a certain corner of the internet, the topic of color blindness has come up anew because of some drama surrounding TED Talk and Coleman Hughes. Even saw someone repost Kendi coincidentally bringing it up on LinkedIn, obviously taking the opposite position as Hughes. I haven't watched the new debate video. But basically, Hughes did a TED Talk back in May that was in support of color blindness as an ideal and mental framework. But the organization got back to him saying that they were not going to publish that talk on their YouTube channel. Through back and forth, they were convinced to publish it recently with the added caveat that there would need to be a longer formal debate about it. Watched a short documentary today. About an hour long. It was about missing and murdered indigenous women in the United States. Specifically in North Dakota and Minnesota. It's a topic I'm aware of but didn't know much detail about, thus watching the documentary.
It focused on two specific murders but also on a woman running for local office and her journey to pass a national bill that would result in data being collected on indigenous women specifically because up until that point, there was no one tracking that.
What was missing from the documentary was essentially any and all men. They were alluded to (through pronoun usage) as the perpetrators of this violence. But it remained entirely unaddressed why indigenous women in particular are so disproportionately targeted or what any solutions were. There was one passing mention on highways going through reservations and men perhaps driving through reservations to abduct women. But human trafficking was never brought up. Domestic violence was never brought up. All the usual things you'd expect to be mentioned with men murdering women never came up.
For one of the murders they were focusing on (the abduction and murder of a woman who was eight months pregnant), they did mention that the people who did it were a couple that lived on the floor above them in the same building... which I did not expect. But they skipped over any mention of a trial or motivations just mentioning that the woman got life in prison but the man didn't. The other murder was someone's grandmother, wheelchair and all, abducted while sitting outside her home, killed, and left in a field somewhere. The man was caught right away. Again, no mention of a trial or motivations.
In both cases, the film focused on the story thread on how good it was that they were able to find the bodies, the end statistic emphasizing how many of these cases go unsolved and a body is never recovered. Both abductions/murders happened in the suburbs of cities like Fargo and not on reservations. They talked about how communities would come together to search for people suggesting that the police didn't put much effort into doing so. But nothing was ever mentioned about addressing police protocols either.
Obviously, with the internet all this missing info is at my fingertips. I just thought the focus of the documentary was a bit odd/unexpected. It kind of went against everything you'd expect of a piece on violence against women.
