A consistent logic.
I write fantasy primarily. It may sound odd, but Newton's Laws of Motion are a guiding framework for how I work through the logic in my stories. Not just in terms of physical fights (such as Parthia leveraging against the creature's mass to gain a mechanical advantage in order to snap it's neck), but also in social/societal aspects.
In an overly simplified concept. Think of a village as a table with double handful of spheres on it. Glass marbles, tempered ball bearings, lead musket balls, paint balls, golf balls, etc, etc. Now take a decorative stone ball from back in the lat 90's when the Nu-Age crowd suddenly got obsessed with platonic solids. Rolling that stone sphere into the other spheres represents a person or event that changes the momentum within the system (the village). Each existing sphere (villagers) moves according to the dictates of the material it's made of (the individual personalities of the villagers).
Am I making sense to anyone, or should I have stopped at "A consistent logic." for my answer?

For me it's an exploration, rowing a boat away from the docks following the current of curiosity about places not my own, and people who I'll grow to know.
To a more character sense, my stories typically start just before things go arse over tit. Happy short stories always bud from a work, but the main story germinates from an event of tragedy or upheaval that can't be recovered from.
THE EXCEPTION is Maggie "Magpie" Siebyn. Her story started with the short story about her mum (Rook Shields) falling in love with her dad (Sisa Siebyn) who was an actor in a traveling troupe. Maggie had a low strife life before she set out to see some of the world her parents talked of

I like dream sequences, but they should add something to the story even if it seems like a momentary side tracking. You can telegraph information trough them, even pull a Chekov's Gun

This is also why I'll respond sporadically to the various hashtags. Sometimes my brain does the equivilant of finding a piece of cuttlery that slid between the tray and the drawer, then BOOM! y'all get a few hundred word response. Other times I'll see a question, my brain has a few thousand words, but I just don't have the ability to write it out.

There isn't a need because that isn't that inequity. Everyone looks after each other. If you got sick & couldn't tend fire or make food, several people around you would take turns checking in, cooking, chopping wood, etc. Even if you had a big blow-out argument with someone the week prior, that person would still look after you. It's a core philosophy of the village.
Arguments get resolved tomorrow, the person gets taken care of today.

Much like tieflingdio@mstdn.games cited, The Dresden Files fell really flat in its adaptation to a live action tv series.
The books get into gritty territory, including politics between Fae courts, and it lost soooo much when translated to 30-45min live action episodes. It doesn't help that it didn't survive long enough for the actors to hit stride & developed screen chemistry.
Each book really should've been covered in a season

It was rather amusing to watch Gavin go from his usual Puckish calm to flustered.. He never minded that he didn't understand Orcish when I whispered in his ear while we shared a bunk and cuddled. But, mid conversation? Equal measures aroused and confused. Did I enjoy teasing him like this? You bet. It's fair play considering while we were on Addriva’s Breathe he liked to tease by weaving innuendos into the orders he relayed to me.
“< Handsome.. bastard.. >” I repeated slowly with exaggerated emphasis while gesturing at his face.
Gavin narrowed his eyes, raised an eyebrow and gave me a smirk of “I see what you're doing now.”

We exhale.
Our eyes see nothing else.
Our ears hear nothing else.
We inhale.
He smells sweet like honeysuckle to us.
We kiss him and whisper in his ear, “Until the sun turns to ice and gives no warmth at all. Until the stars fall like drops of rain searching for a river. And even after then my love.”

I scrambled to get upright, pushing my legs into the ground begging them to make me move, to run.
A root grabbed my foot, faltering my desperate stride to outrun the bellowing beast chasing me.
Branches and thorns collected tithes of blood and flesh as my ears guided me towards the keening call of a river.
The steam of my sweat billowed past me as I skidded to a halt on the embankment.
Before me the river coursed like a writhing wurm as wide as a field, darkened by obfuscating depths and flecked with the white of water breaking over rocks.
I glanced over my shoulder as the sound of the beast being driven onward by its master broke my attention.

Parthia's nightmare is the closest I get to a 'typical' horror / scary scene.
The dread of running and being chased relentlessly.
There's other scenes I consider scary, but they're more emotionally complex / driven by something other than panic+tension.
The immediate aftermath of her killing the creature is infinity more scary to me because there's a visceral terror coursing through her, as she understands she might end up killing people she loves and cares about. All it would take is a thrown rock, a jab of a tool, a torch waved too close, and the adrenaline and instincts will yank her right into fight-for-survival mode, and she doesn't yet have enough control to stop if that were to happen.

I do love a good 24 or 30in with metal blades. More expensive than the plastic box fans, but the last longer and push air better...
I went to conventions when I was younger... Too poor, too old, and too broke to get any enjoyment from them these days...
Plus there's still a fucking plague going on that fucks your health even with "mild" symptoms. We have a society that abhors disabled people, and guess what a long term effect of C19 is?

Very much yes.
Many passages in The Cantata of the Wild Soul wrench my heart to heavy heaving upon each time I read them, and took much slow time to commit them to paper for the same reason.

I extended a claw and traced my face in the mirror.
So very much more animal than human, a monster.
There was a certain dangerous beauty and fearful symmetry to what.. to who I saw looking back.
“¿Pin’, was this.. what you saw when you called me a beautiful soul-from-the-forest?”
There was a quiet tap.. tap.. tap.. as tears came on slowly falling like the gentle rains of late Spring.
“Did you… ¿Did you see me.. as this, before.. I was this? Was I really always this‽”
I ripped the mirror off the wall and sent it flying.
Too many emotions started flooding in, and it hurt…
I felt sad,
I felt monstrous,
I felt beautiful,
I felt feral,
I felt happy,
So many emotions colliding, fighting, none able to come out on top.
Just a constant cascading cyclone,
Sad, monstrous, elation, beautiful,
Animalistic, joyous, confusion, lonely,
Monstrously-beautiful, painful-loneliness, joyous-sad, animalistic-elation…
It was too overwhelming.
Too overwhelming.
TOO OVERWHELMED!
I grabbed my head with both hands trying to make my mind stop spinning like a feather at the mercy of a storm’s winds.
The scream that erupted from me was a savage primal hymn of every emotion I was feeling.

Quill and well for grimore & other important things, or when I need to move slowly
Pen / pencil+ paper if I need to sketch at the same time or my mind needs the soothing feeling of cursive (fuck is a very pleasing word to write in cursive)
Type writer when I need that heavy tactile sensation or i need to think as i write
Computer when the words pour out faster than I can think
