The Cantata of the Wild Soul takes place during Winter.

They traded their hunting and trapping skills with others in the village that were better at farming.
One year the winter was worse than usual, food supplies ran light. So they set out deep into the woods to get an elk to split with the neighbors.
It was nearing dusk when they happened upon the mangled carcass of an elk frozen to a boulder. Whatever had killed it had chewed through the rib bones and left vertebrae crushed to bits.
