Looking great, and nice layering. I didn't get any potatoes out w/ the family-med thing going on, but a few sprouted on their own...and were within a month or two razed to the ground by those damn potato beetles. may still try to salvage some of the seed-potatoes I've got in the basement and grow a little something just to keep the stock going.

have grown a purple bean, romano purpuriat, that you could almost do decoratively. Leaves were a nice rich green but the stem too was that dark purple/red.

I only mean "like potatoes" in the sense that you'd need a particular reason (and there is one) to grow from literal seed rather than (in the potato case) a tuber. I.e., do they senesce after a number of generations or some such. Sounds like no, that's just how alpine strawberries propagate if I'm following Zealist.

Finally at least weighed the potatoes - About 95 pounds of German Butterball!
Still haven’t sorted & cleaned, and obviously there’ll be a few green ones that aren’t good for anything other than maybe as seed potatoes, but it’s pretty good for a 30-ish foot row.

It would take a fair amount of space to produce that much ime. I do about 4-6" spacing within, and 12-20" spacing b/t rows. This year I grew iirc about 130 bulbs and that took...didn't measure, but guessing...maybe 30' in 3 rows, I'd say maybe 6' all-said. Not every single bulb was of reasonable quality, so if you wanted 365 a season, I think you might be looking at (swag here) like 90-100' at around 6' wide.

Yeah, it's amazing how expensive even the little rinky-dink round cages have become. My neighbor has those square folding ones - super strong, and he just lets foliage drape once it gets to the top (idk something like 5'), but he got them all from a longtime grower who was getting out of it.
I've tried a few patterns, but I'm pretty happy this year w/ starting them in the rink-dink-rounds, putting up 8' tposts w/ pvc junctions running electrical conduit through, then tying four nylon twines right to the cage (which was well-held by the time the toms got up to that maybe 3' level), and trimming suckers other than what got me the four I needed to spiral up those.
Have done the single-stem thing you see in greenhouses, but unless you're in that environment and can go all year, I like the idea of something in between that and an untrimmed bush.

Thanks. My concept of a beefsteak is a tomato where, when you cut a slice of it, you've got more flesh than seed cavity and gel. Idk if that's what everyone thinks of, but yeah I suppose they tend to be good as 'slicers' for sandwiches just b/c you don't get your bread soggy.
That said, I haven't grown anything bred as an 'earlygrow', so I couldn't say if there's a tendency for them to have larger seed cavities w/ more gel. Often when you're poking around a seed company will have at least one image of the variety cut open, so I'd just look at that, and hope their images are accurate. "Grow it out" is always the best arbiter tho.

Yeah I've seen people do stuff like carefully pull out potted potatoes, pick out the developed ones, then repot w/ some new fertilizer to size up the others. Certainly makes sense in a space-limited situation.

Neat. I've grown a fair range of radishes, and tbh I think my fav is still just the classic 'French Breakfast'. Didn't do any this year, or any lettuces that weren't just volunteer b/c I can't get salad into the rotation in this house, and making an entire separate dish just for myself is too time-consuming.

Last year I did zucchini (just 2 plants) and blanched/vac-pac'ed/froze chunks, assuming I'd use it in soups. Have done it a few times, but yeah there's probably still like 6-8lbs in the freezer even now. Does seem to keep pretty well that way since the air is occluded, but was tough to seal b/c it's so watery.

I may be misremembering, but I believe lime is more strictly a buffer than a real astringent. Like, over-supplementation is still a problem for other reasons, but it would tend to force your soil to remain ~6.5ph iirc rateher than push it any higher.

I imagine they can deal w/ it better b/c of how thick the stems tend to be. Sweetmeat stems are thicker than all the c. moschata that I grow (well, only butternut), but those don't seem to get attacked, or at least collapse from it. Idk maybe it's b/c the stems aren't hollow.

Tucking into the first watermelon of the season.
Nobody else wants any so I literally ate watermelon all day while I worked, and still only got a little more than 1/4 of the way in. Great flavor. Sweet but not too sweet, super refreshing, even seemed to have fewer seeds than last year's mickylees.

This was actually a few days ago, but still maybe five days after the big harvest. I thought I might've let it go too long and they'd be starchy, but no joke they were even sweeter than the first ears we ate immediately after harvest. Seems this Gotta Have It is a very forgiving variety. Will definitely grow again.

Sugarbaby watermelon plants staying extremely compact, but really not producing fruit any more densely than the much more expansive Mickylees. Overall, Mickylee way ahead at maybe 5 fruit, w/ 3 nearing ripeness off 2 plants, and afaict only 2 fruit w/ 1 well-on for the Sugarbaby. Maybe still worth growing if you just start more plants depending on what we see in flavor.

I'd like to. For one, I'm banned from youtube (at least commenting, and idk if it applies to uploading, but it would be weird not to be able to respond to people), and I have family stuff on top of work that make consistent projects like a channel implausible. I'll try some things w/ them and see where we go tho. Tbh I think it's just the first-gen thing in this case, but the genetics should be there in the underground tubers as well if it's more unique than that.

Thanks, I think the reddish-purple appearance of the tassles may have been a bit about the evening light, but the variety is 'gotta have it' from gurneys. I think other seed sellers have it, but that's where I got mine. Most of the time I avoid those larger retailers, but my neighbor talked this variety up to a point where I just decided to give it a go.

Not quite sure how best to manage determinate tomatoes. Although, with the knee-high weeds finally pulled, these Roma VF are at least looking healthy. Think I'll probably thin out a bit of the lower branching, but maybe leave one or two completely alone and cut down a couple to four branches then spiral them up the rope supports to see what happens.

sorry - Idk if I shared w/ you already but Hoss tool had a video on how they do a fert schedule that I've found pretty useful. Most crucial thing I'd say is that unless you have insanely fertile soil, expect to use some npk, like a 12-12-12 or something, and at a fairly high intensity.

Finally found a fruit on the little compact-foliage sugarbaby watermelons. Never grown a variety w/ such a dark-green rind, but it looks healthy.
Not quite keeping up w/ comparatively light Micklee that found its way over the edge of the bed and had to have some stakes put in place to keep it from tearing off the vine as it swells.

Have taken maybe half a dozen test ears. The couple that were really filled-out genuinely were some of the sweetest corn I've ever had w/o some kind of unnatural syrupy quality. They were however about as inconsistently finished as the stalks were to put out tassles - as you can see here, a fair number still had some filling out to do despite the completely browned-off silks.

Pulling weeds by hand and met this little guy - the Io moth's caterpillar. Those bristles sting. In the vicinity, although not as bad as a beesting. Then again I had some numbing spray. Potato beetle notwithstanding, the German Butterball greens are looking incredibly vibrant, and the fairly minimal damage hasn't prevented them from starting to put out flowers earlier than I've ever seen.

Thanks, and yeah I almost thought I was going crazy b/c I could've sworn that I remembered hearing that the currant/gooseberry family was a host for the blight that basically destroyed the American chestnut. I've searched for it in the past, but came up blank. Turns out I'm not crazy : archewild.com/species-spotlight-ribes-americanum/ (see: 'Legal Restrictions')
Would be curious to learn about any other bits of how we've worked w/ the family in this country. Any refs?

The gooseberry harvest begins...
Turned out I was actually a little lax b/c we've had like a week of rain, and your boots will turn into balls of clay until the surface dries up out there. So, a few overripe guys in here, but it's fine they still taste good.
Any that are truly beyond the pale I can just open up, shove in pots & see if it gets me some new plants.

Row cover seems to be keeping the potato beetles off the German Butterball so far, although even w/ a 10' wide strip the greens are already pushing the limit in a few places. Kind of problem you want I suppose.

I don't have anything so nice, but yeah if I ever get my own place I'll definitely build some racks w/ a couple layers of interchangeable/layer-able meshes from like cattle-panel to window mesh for drying various things. This year I just put the garlics across a couple pieces of electrical conduit propped b/t two chairs. Did the job alright.

The Bee-Balm/Monardia/Bergamot is about waist high, which tends to mean it's about to start putting out some blooms. Need to move it away from the irises that were here before I got here b/c they're really squeezed together and I don't think the former is doing as well as it could.

Tend to feel the same way bout arugula - Generally very bitter ime. Can enjoy a little of that, but I know people who will make a whole salad out of the stuff.
I may have confused the question w/ 'blanch'. I don't mean like boiling for a few minutes before you freeze something. They also call it 'forcing' - you grow in darkness after you've built up a root. Similar to what they do w/ rhubarb to get those light-pink/less-sour(oxalic-acid) shoots. Iirc, that process is supposed to prevent a lot of the bitterness that makes it unappealing for a lot of people. I believe chicory, endive, and radicchio are the same species, and the cultivar generally used for forcing is witloof de bruxelles.

Pulled the older sage plants to refresh them w/ seedlings started last season and the one before.
They'll be kind of wispy this season, but they're putting out a healthy number of blooms, and will let me rearrange some things out there.

This would apply to low-heat & pure-sweet peppers too. I guess the one thing I'd say about at least my own mini-sweets is that they're not especially branchy, and have short inter-node spacing. Means for a lot of peppers in a compact plant, but does tend to limit per-plant production. Tbh if that's how yours are, it'll be hard to go wrong w/ a few more than you'd expect to need.
