Yeah, it's amazing how expensive even the little rinky-dink round cages have become. My neighbor has those square folding ones - super strong, and he just lets foliage drape once it gets to the top (idk something like 5'), but he got them all from a longtime grower who was getting out of it.
I've tried a few patterns, but I'm pretty happy this year w/ starting them in the rink-dink-rounds, putting up 8' tposts w/ pvc junctions running electrical conduit through, then tying four nylon twines right to the cage (which was well-held by the time the toms got up to that maybe 3' level), and trimming suckers other than what got me the four I needed to spiral up those.
Have done the single-stem thing you see in greenhouses, but unless you're in that environment and can go all year, I like the idea of something in between that and an untrimmed bush.
