I have worked so long and hard to get our students to be less excitable in that way. It's a multi-year project but it is possible. I start with pointing out that screaming won't do anything to help us calmly move the creature back where it belongs.
Having look at macro photos of common creatures where you can see their eyes and they are doing something calm, like eating or cleaning themselves helps a LOT.

I have a character who is "good with the computer" experimental psychologist at CUNY (but I don't call it that) uses linux.

I know, for example, that Trump et al have been telling lies about the wildfires. I do not know what those lies might be. I know that many people have been disgusted with every aspect of the potential cabinet appointments. But the names of each of these clownish men and their exact failings? I don't know and sincerely don't care.
I am doing my best to wait for information I can act on.

I have found a very funny photo of a cat interacting with a "snow cat" with trepidation.
However, finding the original source of this image has proved too difficult. It's someone's cat. (and someone's snowcat too) but this thing shows up on boredpanda/facebook/X in 2022 as if out of nowhere. It's been posted all over the place. (it's super cute) but never with a source.
I will give this 15 more min. of digging.
I wonder if the person who took the photo knows how much traffic it's generated?

I was *wondering* why Beyoncé went so hard on the country theme for her big half-time show on the Christmas football game. And ever since I've noticed this I've been kind of depressed. I guess I was really having a good time fixing my life, struggling to get my head above water. Not giving up! Planning. Being smart about it. This was a much more mature version of something I did when I was younger that was similar since *this* time I knew I had to be reasonable and not overwork myself or set unreasonable goals. I organized my time so that only very rarely would I ever need to do anything for work when I wasn't *at* work. I built in exercise in to my schedule. I got better at keeping track of people's names and appointments.
And?
Everything worked perfectly. I'm looking at the goals that seemed so overwhelming and impossible three years ago, and the list is all neatly checked off. I'm all done. I did it.

Three years ago I broke my leg. And it sort of woke me up in a big way. I could see that if I didn't take better care of my health I'd have some big problems. I could also see that my job was eating up too much of my life and causing me too much stress because I was being avoidant and bad at communicating and generally being responsive and organized.
So, I went on the war path.

I'm messing with the Chinese-designed eink MP3 player I got myself for Christmas. It can read text files, but not e-pub or pdfs, but I didn't really get it for reading books. (Famue e-ink is the brand)
However, I want to understand it better. First of all, in the context of a language dictionary quiz game (built in) what is a *.std file?

But it still is very strange since when modern children start drawing one of the first things they will draw are faces.
Faces dominate our minds, the brain seems to process faces in special ways that other things are not.
I wish I could go back and just ask them... why not draw some portraits so we could see the emotions and faces of all of you people of the past?
This makes me think they saw the world in radically different ways that we do now.

I'm speaking very broadly, about tens of thousands of years of human history across multiple continents and contexts. And where you find the fine careful paintings of wildlife you DO NOT find human faces.
I think it says that people must not have felt motivated to make such drawings of the face, that they didn't like it or see it as useful.
They also didn't do drawings of IDK, insects very often. Insects were not as important as the large animals they hunted and that hunted them.

So, that makes it more remarkable that what you almost never ever find in this kind of painting are human faces. Possibly there will be human forms... humans hunting and running and swimming, having sex and giving birth... but the humans are like abstracted shadows. Sometimes with pinheads, hardly ever with eyes. And practically NEVER a face.
It's very tempting to make up a taboo about drawing faces. A cultural rule, but I think it has to go deeper than that.

OK one more musing about human pre-history. We have many cave paintings from all around the world and they almost always show animals, the accuracy and beauty of these drawings of the fauna are such that we can tell the sex, age and exact species in many cases. There is a wall of animal footprints carved in stone and you can tell the age and sex of the animals *from the prints* our ancestors knew the natural world intimately and made careful records of this knowledge. 1/

Math people. Do you have an intuitive *geometric* reason why interlacing the power series of sin x and cos x gives the series for eˣ?
Do you have a way that you *visualize* growth whose rate is exactly its present value coming out of the unit circle as sine and cosine do?
I know the equations, and the proofs and they aren't convoluted and probably "enough" but I hope someone can share their mental images. Even if they aren't fully formed.

Streetsblog is a wonderful organization and I've volunteered and supported them for over a decade. Their presence here on the fediverse leaves something to be desired. They basically spam us daily with all of their blog posts and don't have anyone reading the replies or watching to see how those posts spread. It's not the children of "wealthy east coast elites" who won't be vaccinated or who will die in back room abortions. It's not the wealthy elites who will die when the national weather service fails to communicate hurricane dangers properly. Nor will the cuts to SNAP harm them or the decaying schools.
It's ordinary people.
And I think that some people have signed up for this just because it makes a segment of the people who they perceive as elites angry.

I think there are many people who don't like to think of themselves as bigots. This isn't the same thing as not supporting or benefiting from bigotry and oppression, but it is distinct from openly embracing bigotry (and there is some of that too) These are the ones who will point to a "black friend" or "gay friend" or say "but how can they be racist there is Candice Owens?"
Who they are open about hating and wanting to hurt are prominent liberals.

Math is a core component of being human and the human ways of thinking and reasoning. It is "for" everyone. Yes some will get deeper in and more esoteric than others, but that's just about investing your time and heart in learning more details and depth.
Part of that artificial barrier serves to protect the sense that mathematics is a secret priesthood and it's just a way of hoarding power which disgusts me.

They know a little calc before they get into physics. And they often tell me about how they used it in my calc class.
But, what I wish we could do is stop treating Statistics like it's... the math class for "weak" students who couldn't do calculus.
Part of the problem is there is still a tendency to classify kids as "math people" and "not math people" although I'm breaking my peers of this notion every chance I get. Part of it is this snobbishness pure math people have about stats.

I teach at a very academically rigorous school. But, there are a few things this school does that might surprise people:
1. Many teachers teach a wide range of grade levels. So you could have a teacher who *could* teach Linear Algebra teaching you in 4th grade math.
2. The school makes time for creative math and CS in addition to the regular class. So I get to work with students without pressure to get them past any particular test or goal posts.

I try not to use the word “pundit” like a slur. Interpreting and summarizing political news is important work. So important it is a focal point for manipulation. Still, it’s just as possible that “market pressures” have perverse effects. In particular, sensational “news” sells better than sober assessments and “news” that tells you that uncertain events will go the way you want is more appealing than saying “we don’t know.”

I guess I'm a little negative on the whole "there are no stupid questions" ethos since asking the right question is a undervalued skill.
A really remarkable question can do more than the most excellent of answers. Questions are important and it's worth thinking about if the ones you are asking are good or not.
I do support the effort to get people over the hump of simply admitting they have questions, that they do not know everything. But, let us go further.

"Trilobite: eyewitness to evolution" like "Annals of the Former World" but less daunting and metaphysical. "Annals of the Former World" is a book you get lost in, the deep past swallows you. The best way to read it is on a long train ride going out West. "Trilobite" is a book you can read in bursts on the bus, or in the tub... it's about science but feels like a magical adventure where secret worlds lurk behind bookshelves.
Like one and you will like the other for different reasons.

There was a recent news item about a Twitch streamer known for "pranks and flaunting his wealth" crashing his expensive sports car, injuring his cameraman and other motorists while using his phone as he was driving in the rain.

Every year the binomial name of one creature should be revised by general vote of the public. Anyone who has published a paper on taxonomy in a reputable journal could propose a change and these would be voted on bracket style by the general public online.
The purpose would be to clean up names that are just terrible, vanity projects, unfair, confusing, or those that have obvious better alternatives.

On the surface of a sphere you have a real problem. (OK call the one with smaller area "inside" done and dusted.) On an infinite plane, maybe you can say something about finite vs. infinite to make the distinction.

A school library should have a copy of the Bible, ideally more than one version ... these are very inexpensive and can be bought for only a few dollars in most cases.

When it comes to selecting a calculus textbook my most petty complaint is that most books are simply to large and bloated. Giving these to schoolchildren is some kind of OSHA violation. In a way because books are often now digital packages the “text” could be distilled from the problem sets, extra examples, sus math history, dated “hello kids” photos etc. can all go online …
The book itself can be a slim little number. It’s not like there is all that much to it! come on!

On week days I give Pica her healthy food and leave and it's gone when I get home. But it's Saturday (caturday) so she can complain and try to pressure me into giving her junk food. So she's not eating it and doing a whole picket line under my desk.
But, she's been exposed! She will eat the healthy stuff! And it helps with the whole "fart farmer" issue (That's one of her nicknames... guess why)
Anyway. Please pray for me to be strong under this influence campaign.

In order to be useful one must be (pardon the anachronism) an idiot. That's why someone like Tim Pool ends up working for Putin. But, why limit yourself to silly podcasters? Wouldn't it be better to have someone who could vote on bills? Are there any people in congress with Pool-like intellects?

Contemporary car design is so ugly. Every car looks like an old man who got too much plastic surgery with angry anime eyes. The forms are neither geometric and pure, nor are the taken from nature— it’s just a pointless collision of swooshes like the Nike logo and swerves that gesture at aerodynamics without being functional or beautiful to behold. The colors are aggressively frumpy— the textures plastic so that even when brand new they do not shine.

I was reading a blurb on Math history with my students and the following sentence gave me a queasy feeling. “Euclid’s system of geometry dominated mathematics until the 19th century.” This is … OK. Yes, no one really defined alternate geometries until then, but, people had to work on surfaces of spheres for practical reasons— and the refined edifice we call “Euclidean Geometry”goes a way beyond what Euclid the Greek man had in mind. It feels a little “just so” to me. Like much of math history.

I checked on the trending topics a few times on X over the evening including after the Taylor Swift endorsement and "Taylor Swift" was not trending. Even after an hour or so the only Taylor related tag was "Tay Tay" and it wasn't in the top five.
It could be that there are simply no women on X anymore.
But, I can't shake the feeling a billionaire messed with his algorithm.
Of course I can't prove this. But it's reasonable, right?

There are no white translucent troglobite cave ants that we know of as of now, but that doesn't mean that there were never were white translucent troglobite cave ants... with no eyes and extra long antennae ... feeling around in the dark in the past... or perhaps even now in some cave system long ago cut off from the surface, their trails memorialized in geodes, their dead queens sleeping in still glassy pools of crystal water lost in darkness...
