"Trilobite: eyewitness to evolution" like "Annals of the Former World" but less daunting and metaphysical. "Annals of the Former World" is a book you get lost in, the deep past swallows you. The best way to read it is on a long train ride going out West. "Trilobite" is a book you can read in bursts on the bus, or in the tub... it's about science but feels like a magical adventure where secret worlds lurk behind bookshelves.
Like one and you will like the other for different reasons.

There was a recent news item about a Twitch streamer known for "pranks and flaunting his wealth" crashing his expensive sports car, injuring his cameraman and other motorists while using his phone as he was driving in the rain.
The whole thing has worked out very well for him with no one dead and national media attention, and clearly he's of the "no such thing as bad press" school of self-promotion.

When it comes to selecting a calculus textbook my most petty complaint is that most books are simply to large and bloated. Giving these to schoolchildren is some kind of OSHA violation. In a way because books are often now digital packages the “text” could be distilled from the problem sets, extra examples, sus math history, dated “hello kids” photos etc. can all go online …
The book itself can be a slim little number. It’s not like there is all that much to it! come on!

Contemporary car design is so ugly. Every car looks like an old man who got too much plastic surgery with angry anime eyes. The forms are neither geometric and pure, nor are the taken from nature— it’s just a pointless collision of swooshes like the Nike logo and swerves that gesture at aerodynamics without being functional or beautiful to behold. I was reading a blurb on Math history with my students and the following sentence gave me a queasy feeling. “Euclid’s system of geometry dominated mathematics until the 19th century.” This is … OK. Yes, no one really defined alternate geometries until then, but, people had to work on surfaces of spheres for practical reasons— and the refined edifice we call “Euclidean Geometry”goes a way beyond what Euclid the Greek man had in mind. It feels a little “just so” to me. Like much of math history.

I think I could modify an old Sony Sports Walkman to have a rechargeable battery... but I don't know if I could make it look good.

When I was in my first year teaching we took the 9th graders on a field trip, on our way we cut through a posh little garden store and my two most troublesome student were gawking and joking about how expensive the "trees in pots" were. (like $300) "I can get a tree" one of them said. I didn't realize how ominous this was.
The next day they cut school, dug up a sapling in the neglected park near the school. Somehow they got caught and it was a whole thing.

I looked at 21 cats and was correct 18 times.
But, I couldn't explain the difference, female cats have ... smaller faces? Rounder heads?
Vets I know say they can't tell with kittens, but often can somewhat with adult cats.

In American politics "communist" is used as an insult. A dirty word, an accusation that, should it stick to you, could get you blacklisted (basically no one will hire you or work with you)
But, communism is so poorly understood I wonder if it has much meaning to the average voter.
It's a word that evokes people in identical jumpers walking in lines, the old Soviet Union. Democrats are terrified of being called communist but does anyone under 40 even understand this argument?

Never knew designing a stove could be so complex. We were griping about touch controls yesterday... but a lot of people pointed out advantages of touch controls mainly:
* easier to clean
* can be easier to press under some circumstances and for some users.
At the same time blind people, me, and tactile feedback enjoyers hate them.
I think at least part of my dislike of touch controls comes from experiences with poorly calibrated sensors with bad debouncing and keypress software.

Can I just say that the option to mute people on here for 24 hours to 7 days, rather than either muting them forever or blocking them is a wonderful feature that I wish more social media had? It was designed for muting people if they are doing something like livecasting some show you don't care about... but it works well for suspected trolls too. It allows you to become non-responsive with little effort without alerting the target that you got mad and blocked them.

I have tried to understand this for years. I've read some "cat advice pages" but they tend to just address why cats meow. Eg. the meow gets a reaction they like etc.
But why do some cats go into another room (not the room where they are fed) then meow really loudly in that room? There is nothing in there, I've checked.
My current theory is Pica likes to be called. Since I do call her when she pipes up and she comes right away.

This isn't even that remarkable for Rogan. He's had people like this before on the show and frankly says stuff himself that ought to make it clear "where he is coming from" ... but this kind of visual evidence (You literally have on a Nazi jacket) can be more clear and compelling than analyzing words.
The chat on the show noticed this, was disgusted and moved on. But I say... save the evidence!
