There is something about translating ancient writing for yourself, even if it's just a list of numbers like Plimpton 322 that fixes the sense of a real person, a real mind at a point in time. That this point in time is 3800 years ago means that whenever I hear something about some other ancient culture I'm thinking "oh that was right before my friend, the one who liked right triangles so much made their tablet!" Or "That was 1000 years after my friend from that tablet."
