I'm not a Mozilla insider or anything but I took a look at their bylaws and afaict they have a self-perpetuating board, which means they're not formally accountable to anyone.
I prefer a member elected board (like the PSF has). It's hard for leadership to stray too far from member values when they're elected by members.
I know too many self-perpetuating boards who destroyed what they were supposed to be safeguarding, or even enabled abuse.

I've kept my Facebook account in order to stay connected with the several hundred friends, family, and other 'offline' connections I'd otherwise lose touch with. But I don't post much anymore.

Slack just announced they're deleting most of the message history of workspaces on the free plan.
They are not giving groups a chance to save their older messages. We still only have access to last 90 days.
Options are: buy a paid plan for a month and use it to download your archives, or abandon your workspace history.
May be able to hack this with free trials but either way it's a reminder that VC funding will run out and the free things you've come to rely upon will be used to exploit you.

As a small account, I never used this filter and when I moved to Mastodon I didn't notice the difference.

@npub18lj…80hq On the one hand, I'm fairly happy where I am now, so changing things feels like a gamble. I think I'd accept some kind of deal where I got to intervene, compare the results, and decide which life to go with.
Interventions would be almost entirely focused on preventing childhood trauma (my own and others') and/or healing from it earlier. That, and I'd tell myself to watch the NWSL from the beginning instead of waiting until 2019.

It's easier to tell the difference between "sounding correct" and "being correct", and the latter naturally wins. But without an easy way to assess what's correct, "sounding correct" becomes the prize, which turns into "sounding smart". In really dysunctional cultures you get puposefully obfuscatory language. I visited Boston for the first time since 2019. One of the best parts, other than reconnecting with friends, was coworking at Diesel.
I've been dreaming about Diesel throughout the pandemic. It has these big garage doors that get opened up in good weather, providing excellent ventilation along with all the usual stuff - wifi, outlets, shade, great food.

Hi #fossy! Workers and Portland locals have organized a protest today against the Her Voice MVMT conference we've been seeing around the conference center. This conference was held against the wishes of the workers who've been forced to interact with them much more than we have.

My issue is usually with sourness. For some reason a lot of fancy coffee tastes sour to me. But of course if I say "can I have a bag of your least sour coffee" they say "none of our coffee is sour". Which is why I keep buying Lavazza or one of a couple other mass produced brands

It took a bit of clicking around on Wikipedia to find the exact connection, but:

Who are your recommended follows for people completely new to Mastodon? I'm looking for people who are quite active and post fun, interesting and not-too-meta content.

My major concern as a new instance admin is helping members have a good experience right off the bat.
What are your tips? I am particularly interested in helping make their timelines interesting right away - what can I do beyond saying "here's a list of cool people to follow"?
Context: this will be a small instance (10-100 ppl, invite only) based around a shared interest. I am worried about folks used to Twitter, etc bouncing off Mastodon because not enough's happening.

My newsletter platform (ghost) is limiting me to 150 characters in my image alt text. This is usually easy enough to achieve but I'm trying to describe complex diagrams. Should I just give up on having decent alt text for these images, or should I ask ghost to consider allowing longer alt text?

I'm looking for examples of UX/interface design where:
* users started using a feature in a way that wasn't intended (can be for good or for ill)
* the product team responded by removing the feature entirely
Also very interested in interfaces where there is an obvious feature that users would want/need that's not provided, and that feature is obviously not provided because it's against the interests of the company who makes the software.
Can anyone think of examples which fit?

Reading @npub1xkg…gph9's latest which casually includes the fact that Andreessen Horowitz has invested over $7.5 *billion *in crypto in the last five years. I knew that a lot of VCs were pouring money into crypto, but *jeez*. The opportunity cost!
Imagine what the Fediverse could do with that kind of support. Or the platform cooperative movement, or workplace democracy.
Of course VCs would never actually invest in those spaces, because they're so much harder to exploit
