Apparently Twitter had a "quality filter" which helps large accounts or accounts targeted by trolls to hide low-quality replies.
As a small account, I never used this filter and when I moved to Mastodon I didn't notice the difference.
The next time you see someone complaining about a deluge of obnoxious replies, don't say "just block them". Go to this github issue and +1 requesting quality filters: https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/12181
