Today, my (retired) dad tried to convince me that ChatGPT was going to save all these companies so much money on labour and that was going to happen any day now.
I tried to explain:
- Hallucinations
- Designed templates are better than LLM generated documents, because you have to rewrite the thing anyway.
- The actual cost of operating an LLM, not including the retraining and R&D costs.
- How it's most likely another pump and dump scheme.
I don't think he got it.

The province of Ontario is legislating itself the power to override municipal planning and building of bike lanes... retroactive 5 years.
Just because cars are losing lanes.
So all of those bike lanes we've implemented across the city in the last 5 years might be torn up through provincial overreach.

@npub1uw8…88kr I hate clothes shopping too. I usually ask a friend who loves shopping to come spend my money. I get out faster than struggling on my own, and they help me look better.
At least in Milan, it's more likely to be high quality clothing that will last you a while instead of the fast fashion bullshit we have here.

I told this story today.
The most difficult student I've ever had was one that'd sneak out of the classroom every time I turned my back. The principal would catch him and tell me I'm responsible for the runner... And the rest of the class. (Mind you, these kids were 13.)
So... I stood and taught standing at the door. A day later I turned my back for like.. 5 seconds, and this kid had half his body out the window 1.5m off the ground.
He gave me a sheepish wave, then jumped out and ran off.

Hey Fedi, I'm looking to talk to older BIPOC 2SLGBTQIA+ people who run or lead in a non-profit or community group that serves their marginalized community. Ideally in Canada (but US is pretty relevant too).

With all this golf talk: A friend took me golfing for the first time last year. We went to the public course next to a subway station.
2 BIPOC queers golfing, taking up space.
Half way through, he asked me what I thought of it.
I can see the appeal, but it feels wrong. I pointed to the local towers of rental blocks. This is one of the poorest neighbourhoods in the city. Why is this a golf course? This golf course should be a public access park with density appropriate equitable amenities.

Today, we have treatments that lower the viral load to undetectable levels.
Undetectable = Untransmissible.
And yet, due to completely arbitrary systems in our society that perpetuates stigma and inequality, people are still dying of HIV/AIDS.
It is a failure of our government at every level that prevention and treatment is not widely available to everyone who needs and/or wants it.

I hope that the new financial literacy graduation requirements will teach a whole generation of kids that we're all fucked and there's no way we can afford to live on the wages they pay us.

35 years ago, up to a million people gathered in Tiananmen Square to demand democratic process and freedom of speech.
The local army reserves refused to move on the students, so they pulled troops from the other side of the country. Some estimates put the deaths at 300-2000.
After, they arrested and executed student leaders and sent their families the bill for the bullets.
And it's now completely wiped from history within China. Suppressed and forgotten.

I was discussing the latest blunder from Neuralink with my friends. They were under the impression this is all still "really cool tech".
There is no reason for any amount of optimism when:
A) There have been 0 peer-reviewed publications resulting from their research;
B) They are being investigated for a HUGE number of animal deaths (1500) in the name of "progress";
C) There's still the DRM/obsolescence challenge.

It's not the only thing they're wrong about, but I can see why politicians would panic about it, especially if they're not educated on WHY the word "free" is used.
