I feel like "don't reinvent the wheel" is overused, and people use it to mean "never make a wheel". Everyone already knows what a wheel is, and making one is *so* easy that sometimes it makes sense if it's a better fit.
"Reinvent" is the key word here. If you vaguely knew what a wheel was and spent a year researching circles, rolling, and axels instead of just looking it up... that's what it means.
You're still allowed to have fun learning something the hard way I guess.

Augh. I've been happy enough with ProtonMail for a few years. The AI stuff was kinda facepalm worthy, but at least they made it sound very ignorable and unintrusive (i.e. it's supposedly not training on your emails). I'm certainly annoyed by the whole "Why would someone care to read an email you didn't care to write" thing personally.
Though I had to look up the Bitcoin thing just now, and WTF... Whyyyyyyy? Who is asking for this, and who is thinking this will expand their business?!

I used goto in C# today for maybe the second time ever. In C I use them rarely, maybe once every 10kloc to do a cleanup-and-return sort of thing since there is no try/catch. I always find it funny that the people I’ve met that are the most opposed to using goto _ever_, have never actually use one, and don’t even know how they work. Heh

Did my first student soaring lesson this morning. (On a simulator, cloud ceiling was too low for a real flight.) I think it went really well! As an R/C pilot I need to use my feet now instead of my thumbs to coordinate a turn, but I think I’m getting the feel for it. Did a handful of mediocre landing patterns, but apparently my aero-tow went well. Felt just like chasing other R/C planes while using video (FPV) goggles, which I’ve done a lot of. :)

Bwa! So my notarization drama is not what I expected.
So when you download an executable file on Mac, it gets "quarantined" and you can't run it directly because it might be dangerous. Bleh. A couple years ago they removed the user option to disable this, and now devs you have to notarize every build instead. Extra bleh.
BUT! Even notarized apps get quarantined _until the user moves the .app bundle manually_ to indicate they trust it's safe. WTF?!
Man, I used to really like OS X...

I've been toying with the Helix editor lately. Autocomplete basically worked out of the box with cmake and clangd. I know like... 4 vi commands, which is apparently perfect to pick Helix up right away without being distracted by the differences. I _probably_ won't leave VSCode anytime soon, but it's good to know there are alternatives I don't dislike.

Isn't this just open source working as intended? Like Prusa themselves have said "We wouldn't exist without open source." (Also I have a Prusa Mk3 in my house, great bit of hardware)

Uff... Years later I still often have _no idea_ how you are supposed to build simple bits of software on Windows. I needed to build a couple of utilities static linked against libpng. Spent a couple hours banging my head against it. Tried finding prebuilt binares for libpng that provided static libs, tried building it myself but it refused find the zlib I built... Gave up and just cross-compiled them using mingw on Linux in a couple minutes. 🤷 Bah!

@npub1pxt…pdwx Egh… yeah, but everything you can do with “productivity” software can be done on paper too. In the games world “DRM free” has lately taken hold. I think the trick is to convince devs that opening the source (if not necessarily the content) is basically the same. It’s not like pirates will care if they can get the source when all they want is a working binary. 10+ years from now it means a game might have new life beyond its commercial phase though.

The combination of Windows/Unity/VR dev is so obnoxiously brittle. One day Unity won't work then spend multiple hours reimporting the project, one day Windows Update will uninstall my GPU drivers, one day SteamVR needs to be restarted 3 times. Last Friday VSCode would keep launching more .net update process until it used all my RAM. Today it keeps throwing errors about a missing NuGet folder while Unity keeps launching processes until all my RAM is gone. Bah!

@npub1ykd…6j2y I had a new phone for a month before I bothered to set it up. Only bought it because the previous one was 7 years old, and I dropped it into several feet of lake water. My laptop died and got replaced a couple months ago, and that went really well though. I wrote down the steps and kinda-sorta scripted what I did the previous time a couple years ago and got through it all in 30 minutes + another 30 mins while it downloaded things.

You can just edit while it runs. There's plenty of libraries to do all the hard stuff too, so you can just make the game...

My laptop died last month, so I've been trying to be productive using my Steam Deck as a temporary replacement. I still just don't like using KDE. It's mostly Windows-like sure, but I use Windows ~3 days a week and don't like that either. So... meh. I set up my old 2013 MacBook Air to use Gnome on for this week, but forgot to bring a video adapter. >_< Oh well.
(p.s. I donate to both Gnome and KDE. So I don't think "I don't like it" is the same as "it's not worthwhile". Floats all boats.

@npub13t0…vj4p Ah! So have you ever used EGL to open an OpenGL context/framebuffer? Not quite as fiddly as Vulkan, but it’s a clear step between that Andy something like SDL. I don’t understand why there isn’t a simple header lib that just makes the decisions to give you a simple framebuffer setup. Would save like half the code in a Vk app.

Could not be more frustrated with computers right now. I really really need a laptop for some light work over the next couple weeks. My laptop died a couple weeks ago, so I set up my Steam Deck to dev on. Guess what decided to also die the day before I leave? -_- !! #[0] Uff. Yeah. I've run into a few AppImages that do that too. It's like the trifecta of worst possible since I have no idea how to troubleshoot an AppImage with broken dependencies. >_<
