Nostr isn't superior in every way.
Centralization has technical advantages. It makes meaningful search easier. It makes discovery easier.
I think it's important to recognize and be honest about the inherent limits of Nostr.
What I hope will happen is that more people will use Nostr, alongside with centralized (or federated, like Mastodon) platform with express free speech policies.

There is no such thing as an "algorithmless" anything that relies on computers. Absolutely everything a computer ever does relies on algorithms.
Even just showing published posts in reverse chronological order requires algorithms.

Of course, liberal(ish) governments are unlikely to do this (and to even care about Nostr as long as it remains as utterly irrelevant as it currently is), but if it's governments you're "fighting against", you'll need more than Nostr. At minimum, relays must be hidden in a darknet.
Nostr, on its own, however, is mostly immune to corporate greed, which is often the cause of censorship.

I think it's not just about balance.
The fact that an immoral idea can be spread should never, in a democracy, be an argument against whatever it is that spreads it.
That's because it's the people that are the ultimate authority and listening and spreading ideas is part of that process.
If the government pass a law to decide what idea can't be allowed, this is against democracy. And even if almost all of the population agrees with this norm, approving it would, similarly to electing a dictator, hamper democracy for future generations, who didn't get to participate in that decision.
The limit to democracy shouldn't be freedom of speech. It should be destroying democracy itself.

I fully agree. Freedom of speech is a fundamental human right.
I am also very much an anti-racist and anti-sexist.
I think if we give freedom to speech to dose that will use it for hate speech, and we should do so, we should also use it to learn from it and counter such hate. Daryl Davis is the master of this.
I would also like to note that, unfortunately, many other kinds of speech are restricted, in the West, too.
Depending on the country, we have blasphemy laws and flag desecration laws.
The United States are regarded as permissive by many, but have laws that allow for censorship of certain acts of expression which, in my view, should very much be allowed. This includes obscenity, certain kinds of software (DRM circumvention and encryption) and certain kinds of information (how DRM systems can be circumvented).
All those restrictions are, in my view, unacceptable, and I remain consistent in the case of hate speech.
I also think racism is a disgrace to humanity and anyone who hates others based on their ethnicity does not have my sympathy or support.

Why would your notes be included?
Personal data, by definition, is any information about an identifiable individual.
Any information.
It could be sensitive information (such as medical information, information about your sexuality, et cetera), it could be your height, it could be where you studied, it could be your favorite color and, of course, it could be what you posted.
You could make the argument that the individual isn't identifiable. Users have a public key, which identifies their account uniquely. You can argue it's pseudonymous, but users optionally can (and typically do) publish a kind 0 event, which often contains their full name and/or other identifiers.
It's not fully specified what counts or doesn't as an identifier. We do, however, know, for example, that IP addresses do count as identifiers by the GDPR, so anything which is connected to IP addresses can be personal data.
I would argue that what's connected to a social media account, including whatever is posted, can and should generally be regarded as personal data, even if no other identifier (such as an IP address) is present, if there is information associated with the account used to distinguish it from others and which commonly (even not as a requirement) is set to something which is sufficient to track back the identity of the user. A Nostr account on Nostr relays should be regarded with roughly the same standards.

Even if the protocol very strictly mandated, in NIP-01, from the very beginning of Nostr, that relays delete events upon request, how would you ever be sure that they do? Anyone can develop a relay that doesn't. You could argue that such relay wouldn't qualify, technically, as a "Nostr relay", but so what?
Also, even if everyone avoids such relays (how would you? They could just selectively refuse to delete some of the notes. They could even hide them for two years, just to trick you, then put them back online), anyone can build a Nostr archive which pulls from public relays, then publishes all notes and refuses to delete them.
You could rely on the law and sue such relays, but they can be in any country and/or behind a darknet.

You can't "defend" yourself from "bad" relays by telling them to delete events. There is nothing you can do that will make them do so, unless they are well-meaning.
But even if all relays you use behave the exact way you want (which you can only know if they are run by parties you know and trust), anyone can and will do whatever it is that you hope won't happen: get on Nostr, fetch notes and publish them again, refusing to delete them.
If you aren't assuming someone *will* act against you, in the smartest way they could, you are not doing security.

If supporting something (not just a human right) comes as a package deal with supporting other things, the amount of people willing to support it will be smaller and both things will have fewer supporters.

My point was that, in my view, the ecosystem would be better if non-economic incentives, of the kind that have been proven to be very successful in the free and open source software environment, were valued more as sufficient motivations within Nostr.
Running a relay wouldn't be very expensive, compared to many other activities performed by nonprofits, but it would obviously have some cost. And yes, as I mentioned, accepting donations in multiple forms will widen the range of donors.
Donations don't have to be trough Nostr-related features (the org could be about free speech in general, such as many existing orgs are, and have the relay as a minor activity) and, contrary to what it seems to be a common opinion, in my view there wouldn't need to be a positive margin (i.e. profit) made by running relays.
Orgs such as FIRE and the Human Rights Foundation are among those that could reasonably have a Nostr relay as one of their activities.
Ideally, there would be several in different jurisdictions.

But people do donate to humanitarian causes to protect fundamental human rights and to non-profit organizations, including in the world of software (think of the many foundations that make free and open source software and collect donations).
Obviously, accepting donations in more forms would be beneficial: look at the Blender Foundations, which accepts fiat as well as multiple cryptocurrencies.
But people on Nostr are focused on money, and Bitcoin in particular, so I don't expect things to work well soon without monetary and Bitcoin-related incentives. Nostr will remain shit for as long as it's Bitcoin focused.

However, I'm not convinced it's a good name. "Addressable event" merely suggests that you can refer to it, which is true for all events. "Replaceable" gives more information about what they actually are.

Ok, but there is a massive difference.
The point of Nostr is to achieve resistance trough decentralization: even if some relay fails, or deletes your notes, they remain available as long as as some other relay continues to store it.
Obviously even that which is on relays won't last *forever*. The sun will explode some day. But it does have a kind of resistance which isn't achieved without decentralization.
Nostr.build, despite the name, has nothing to do with Nostr, relays, or decentralization. It's a classical centralized image hosting platforms, like we've always had. It's not censorship resistant, it's just a plian-old image host like we've always been using.
Linked images don't become "immortal on Nostr". Not only are they not immortal, they aren't even *on Nostr*, they are just on a typical image host and there is a link to them on Nostr (a link which will become invalid as long as the host goes down or deletes that image).

Did I just make Reddit immortal on Nostr? I don't think so.
There absolutely can be resilient censorship-resistant ways to distribute images using decentralized systems, but placing them on a typical image host and linking them on Nostr isn't one of them.

Services like nostr.build, which you use, are simply classical web image host, not at all more resilient than any other image host like Imgur or the like, or even Instagram.
They are all centralized Web image hosting services. The fact that some of them happen to have "Nostr" in the name doesn't add any more resistance.

Nostr is pretty secure in a way that traditional social media aren't.
When you fetch a tweet from Twitter, or a post from Facebook, you are *trusting* that neither Elon nor Zuck have compromised the content of the message.
They *probably* wouldn't do it, but from a technical prospective they absolutely could.
If you fetch a post on Nostr, you know it actually has been published by someone who knows the private key of that public key. This is cryptographically proven and there is nothing relays can do to modify the content of messages.

Not really.
Nostr has no concept of "logging in". It's a protocol and authentication is only mentioned in some optional and marginal features.
Clients, such as noStrudel, but also others, may (and typically do) implement a "log in" function.
You cannot log in with someone's public key, in a meaningful sense. What you can do is fetch events by public key. This isn't a security bug, this is exactly the expected behavior, by design.
Clients may call this "log in", but it's not really something only the actual owner of the key is supposed to be doing. Fetching events is something you are supposed to be able to do, be it trough a client, trough a command line or by manually using the protocol.

It is not assessed on traditional social media (users can just create another account) and it cannot be addressed on Nostr.
Nostr clients aren't meant to limit what users do in any way whatsoever. That's because any user can make their own client. You *never* trust other's clients to behave in a certain way. You control your own client and others control theirs.
Events on Nostr, of all kinds, are public. Anyone can fetch them from relays.
Blocking people on social media is not a form of IT security and the illusion that it can be is, if anything, a mild security threat.
Nostr has no concept of "blocking".
It does have mutes, but this only means you choose to not see messages published by a certain user. You can also choose to not see messages published in 2023, messages that contain the word "word" or messages that are above a certain length.
The protocol specifies none of this, it's just something at the client level, not really part of Nostr itself. And, as I said, you control what your client does.

I think there may be a few reasons why they are not very common.
Among them:
- They are not really Nostr Nostr. Only NIP-01 is real Nostr, while everything else is just sparkling event types. By definition, a Nostr client/relay is characterized by the fact that it communicates trough NIP-01. Everything else is optional.
- Nostr is seen largely as a Twitter-like social media solution and Twitter is used primarily for short texts.
- Precisely because they require more effort. Fewer people are going to be willing to write or read them.
- They are harder to support than standard notes.
- Alternatives for blogging exists, including and especially creating one's own website, as I have (https://www.functorfault.net/). One can then share the blog post on Nostr to receive comments. Why would one write a long post directly on Nostr?

Archives don't have to be decentralized.
It would be enough to have some centralized archives that fetch data from other relays and expressly aim at being archives that preserve posts for as long as possible (unlike most relays, which have no express aim or policy).
The amount of data would, likely, not even be that large (it's just text), especially if you filter out spam (which you may or may not want to do). The price of storage wouldn't be a significant issue.

The point about archiving is actually absolutely correct.
What we do need is one or more archiving relays. Luckily, fetching data from Nostr is much easier than fetching it from mainstream platforms.
I think it could be an interesting project for the Internet Archive or the Archive Team.
It probably wouldn't be too costly, either. It would be acceptable for it to be rather slow and also to have a high latency between when a post is published the first time and when it's available from the archive.

I know I'm being annoying saying this, but I think this needs to pointed out for those who might want to use it.
INAL, this is not legal advice, but a blog made this way is in all likelihood not GDPR-compliant.
As soon as one opens the website, one's IP address (which is personal data) is sent to (and collected by) relay servers the user doesn't even know about.
So one should be mindful of that.

I don't know what you consider to be an inalienable right, but consider, for example, freedom of speech (the same will transfer to most other rights).
You have the right to express yourself freely.
If I were to, for instance, attack you for what you say, that would infringe this right of yours.
This does not, on its own, mean I have to help you do so. It does not mean I owe you anything. It does not even mean I can't censor you on my own server (in the case of online speech).
In order to effectively exercise freedom of speech, some things are necessary and others are quite useful. Having a pen, having a computer, having certain resources will help you.
If you don't have a pen and are unable to get one, none is infringing upon your right to free speech, but it's effectively limited by the fact that you don't have a pen.
If the main system that people use to express themselves online is trough social media platforms, and they don't have another system for public self expression, their freedom of speech is effectively limited, not because anyone is infringing it, but because they lack a way to exercise it.
Some platforms, such as Minds, are "free speech platforms". This is not to say they don't infringe upon your rights. Facebook and Twitters don't either. Rather, it is to say that they are a tool suitable for freedom of expression.
It's important to build such tools, digital and not, and make them widely available, to maximize freedom of expression. It's not morally mandatory to do so, but it makes the world a better place.
Mainstream social media platforms could, if their owners wanted it, be tools aimed at maximizing effective access to the exercise of certain rights. They are not, in practice, because their owners don't want it. This is ok. It's important, however, that we don't treat them as what they aren't and that we build systems that actually are aimed at maximizing effective access to the exercise of those rights.
It's not really a defense, since there isn't really an attack. Rather, it's avoiding a stupid mistake, that would subjugate one's right to the whim of certain companies, and building things that can help to maximize human rights, not because we have to, but because we can.

GitHub is a for profit proprietary platform. Many (certainly not all) public projects on GitHub do happen to be open source (while many others have a proprietary license or even no license whatsoever). Most users and most projects on GitHub don't accept donations. A project can also be developed on GitHub but accept donations trough some system external to GitHub.
Your prediction about money being abandoned is shared by some and not others, which is why a system which isn't designed specifically for those who align with your (or anyone else's) particular ideology need not to be bound to any specific kind of currency. Developers are absolutely free to ask donations in the form of gold and diamonds.

I'm against the idea that apt should be loaded with the functionality of monetary transactions in the specific form and trough the specific currency that you wish to support.
Apt needs to do one thing and it can and should remain simple and focused, like most fundamental Linux (or just Debian and derivatives, in this case) utilities are.
You, or anyone else, is free to develop a command-line utility that will deliver donations in any way you wish, trough any currency you wish, which users will have the freedom to either install or not and that those who wish to contribute to programs meant for package installation and management don't need to maintain.

Linus Torvalds would have had no technical difficulty setting up a donation campaign, if he had chosen to do so. If anything, it would have reached more notoriety, and thus more donations, than any command line utility could ever have provided.
There is no sequence of lines of code that would have changed the situation, because it was a purely social, non-technical matter, one for which Linus himself is arguably in large part at fault.
I too often err towards technosolutionism. It is, indeed, an error.

Of course, all cryptos are made up, as is fiat, and as is Bitcoin.

Absolutely not.
Not everything in the world has to cater to Bitcoin.
The Debian/apt ecosystem does not revolve around any cryptocurrency, or even money in general.
Many if not most open source projects don't and are not trying to get donations in any form.
Developers, in public descriptions of their projects, are free to say whatever they want and to ask for any form of donation they wish, be it cash sent trough post, crypto (not just Bitcoin) or a beer when you meet them in person.
Bitcoin/zaps need not to pollute all software in existence.

I do know how Nostr works, but bullying is not a technical matter, it's a social matter.
There are things I don't like about the Nostr community and I've had unpleasant interactions here, but have you seen Twitter?
The capitalist assholes running mainstream platforms won't protect you from bullying, unfortunately. Censorship doesn't solve bullying.
On Twitter you can also be anonymous by creating an anonymous account.

Also, I don't see why you'd have a separate socket to each server for every client.
Just keep one socket for each one server and stream all data trough that one socket.
You can easily know the correct client of each response by checking the subscription ID.
If you're afraid of colliding subscription ID, just add a client-unique suffix to it, which you can then remove before streaming the response back to the client.

I don't think it's a good idea to refer to government censorship as one of the issues. Not because it's not a big issue, but, rather, because it's something Nostr on its own doesn't address (Nostr with some darknet protocol like Tor or I2P, maybe with some decentralized DNS system, actually might, at the detriment of simplicity and speed).
Governments can still censor you by arresting you if you are in their territory, confiscating your assets if you own anything in their territory, blocking foreign Nostr relays and turning off relays in their territory (arresting relay admins if they don't comply). They may also block the internet altogether, but most Western governments would not do so.
Arbitrary censorship by capitalists and platform owners is what Nostr does solve.

Ok, it's not technically Bitcoin, but it's still cryptocurrency-related (and a cryptocurrency strongly tied to Bitcoin and supported by Satoshi when it was called "BitDNS").
NIP-05 trough Namecoin or ENS, however, would indeed solve the problem of DNS centralization on Nostr.

One can be interested in something without talking about it constantly, especially if the thing in question is something as limited and a specific currency.
It's also rather narrow-minded because many other elements are needed for Internet freedom. A decentralized payment system is neither the only nor the primary component.
Also, if the main use of decentralization is to talk about decentralization itself, if it's such a self-referential end in itself, it's useless and frankly not worth it. Decentralized technologies must be the tools to do what we'd want to do anyways, without having to subjugate ourselves to the whims of oligarchs.
The obsession over Bitcoin is the main reason Nostr won't be successful against mainstream platforms.

Personally I have no intention of using paid features on Nostr myself, but moderation at the level of individual communities is different than moderation at the relay level.
Communities on Nostr are like subreddits. There is value in having the ability to create forums which aren't censored by platform owners (but can be moderated by the owners of that forum).
They can have any set of rules to follow, be about any topic and require any kind of format or post.

Indeed, the fact that our senses are easily deceived is one of the reasons we use instruments of measurement for scientific purposes (as they can detect things we can't, or detect things in a much more consistent manner). We also use animals that are better than ourselves when it comes to some senses (for example dogs for their sense of smell).
It's actually surprising, however, how far we can go using our senses alone, before running into our limits. I'm referring, for instance, to the study of the orbits of planets and the (apparent, relative to us) orbits of stars, and the difference between the two: something apparently (and truly) really hard to deal with, but which we have been studying since before having ways to extend our senses (including the telescope).

The fact that we are easily deceived just means we are flawed, maybe gullible, and often mistaken.
It does not mean reality isn't objective and absolute.
The universe doesn't owe us simplicity or clearness and something can be true regardless of our utter complete ignorance about it. Reality doesn't revolve around humans. The universe was around long before us and will be here long after us, it doesn't depend on us.
Something can be objectively and absolutely true regardless even if us humans in particular are too limited, flawed, gullible, ignorant and stupid to actually understand anything about it.

Social media posts can remain very relevant after a LONG amount of time. Practically forever, in fact.
The solution to this is having a Nostr archive which makes a backup of the whole Nostr ecosystem (by querying relays).
The archive wouldn't even be that large compared to several existing archives.
