Cars are based on proprietary technology and DRM, they are not freedom tech.
To drive a car you rely on services that sell you fuel, unless you are extracting oil yourself, and there aren't many alternative parties independent of each other that will provide it to you. You rely on them continuing to work and need to continue dealing with them.
I guess you can make the argument that if you have an electric car and some means of making electricity which doesn't require maintenance very often, then you do have some level of autonomy.
Otherwise, you are no much more free and independent than if you are using public transport.
