i'd actually say that the linux kernel itself has more or less been exactly this, in the context of the BSD kernel already having been around at the time
i first ran a BSD in the late 90s, i think it was NetBSD on a mac quadra, the project just didn't get adequate traction to support the most common hardware, and probably lost its importance due to how many different hardware platforms the project aimed to support... seeing a pattern here?
i think it's a good thing that people are moving towards ARM and RiscV - of course i prefer the latter because it's fully open and patent free, gonna be a nice day when i can get a decent piece of hardware using one that runs everything as well lol
for now i'll be happy enough with this AMD stuff anyhow... the only thing that makes my computer-life miserable is the linux kernel these days

BSD kernels really do perform substantially better and are simpler, and nowadays can interface to linux kernel modules anyway
version 6 of the linux kernel has been a tire fire in my experience in the last two years
and it's not even just linux, this fucking wayland bullshit... doesn't work with this, doesn't work with that, doesn't actually provide any substantial new capabilities compared to X, just more shit to be maintained and have bugs in it that fuck up our lives
i'm not so much against systemd, it isn't so contentious or different as X is to Wayland, and i kinda agree to some extent that quite a few parts of the linux CLI stack could use improvement, but it really has wasted a lot of developer time due to having to support multiple things (and actually the worst offender at that of all time is Python)

i put my mouse scan rate up and constantly have to repeat my clicks because the stupid mouse is moving while i press the buttons, it is so annoying, and there has been many periods during which the linux kernel's libinput had a dodgy concurrency problem in its queue and i would always get out of order key presses
120 is on the upper side of the limits of the HARDWARE to process human keypresses within the limits of the pressure and actuation distance required for keyboards and i have gateron whites on my keyborad now, 38Nm force they require and i do sometimes accidentally press them because they only need about 2mm distance
so, please, don't fucking lie about how you are typing that fast, i can tell you have a tool helping you if you really are, and i see in the live stream you are only doing 120

where i live, payment cards are in the minority of adoption by local vendors... out of the three grocery/bar places within half an hour walk of where i live, one has a debit card terminal that he has sitting on the bench but not using it and not paying the subscription for the service because he doesn't make enough money nor is there enough demand... local people just use physical cash
so, if you compare bitcoin adoption on the basis of the land area where people have access to vendors who use these cards in the world as a whole... bitcoin adoption is not nearly as far behind it as it may look if you live in a city and 8 out of 10 vendors have card terminals

my binary codec already does a lot of that memory remapping of fields, as the runtime and database versions of the data are basically the same - it keeps the id/pubkey/signature fields (including in common tags) in raw binary and unpacking it into the runtime format is just a matter of creating pointers
the hex encoding is also done with a SIMD hex encoder, and the sha256 hash is done also with a threaded worker based single instruction multiple data so, on avx512 and avx2 that means it runs 2 hashes per CPU thread
switching the binary fields to be kept as binary except up to the wire has a massive benefit
it is so nearly close to being a perfectly servicable wire codec as well, i just didn't design an envelope encoding or binary serialisation for the filters
but other languages probably won't support this kind of optimization very well certainly not javascript
i don't get how javascript parsing is really much slower working in native json (which should be optimized to the max) versus making javascript work with foreign binary data formats for these binary fields
but totally understand why it's hard to make clients that aren't JS/DOM/HTML/CSS based... the whole tech industry has focused on this universal platform and its abomination of a scripting language to the expense of serious languages supporting native apps, and the total lack of adequate multi-platform targeting and adequately broad language support for cocoa, win32, gtk and qt - ironically most of the time it's either electron, putting the front end in a browser engine, or some kind of simple and fairly inadequate immediate mode or similar direct opengl/vulkan based thing (eg imgui, egui, gio, fyne, nucular)

alcohol and cannabis increase insulin response, caffeine (via paraxanthine) increases conversion of fats into blood sugar, i know there is definitely a big role of blood glucose regulation with methamphetamine, and i found that after about 24 hours (and fasting, obviously) it changed my metabolism in a way that helped me think clearer, though continuing to dose after that point leads to a slow crash of blood sugar that you can tell is happening because your body gets colder and you can't think properly... most likely cocaine has a substantial effect on blood sugar too, it's just a drug i've rarely taken because for me it is worse than too much alcohol and too much amphetamine at the same time, the hangover is horrendous
all of these are addictive drugs, all have notable effects on sugar metabolism
it's not and never has been about dopamine, it's about blood sugar

i wondered about that issue... i remember that David Brownstein was adamant that lugol's was specific and i know from my chemistry that it contains I3+ (iodine plus hydriodic acid as a complex) which has better lipid solubility so it gets into tissue with low polarity (ie fat) which you simply can't get with plain iodide salts
i'm gonna add back lugol's to my regime, i knew it was probably useful but couldn't see how to use it... having it in the morning an hour before food with a lot of salts and/or with a high fat food is probably the way... so full fat yogurt with lots of salt and iodine in it is probably about right
iodine was the first suplement i ever took that really made a difference, but i also took it with a great increase in salt levels and i didn't understand back then, what i do now - that i have damaged kidneys - that increased salt levels improve kidney efficiency! also fat digestion, which is really important - to the point where i rediscovered when adding potassium chloride to my regime that my body was again producing increased heat, and the key seemed to be the potassium, which also reduced the cramping
so, yeah
gonna add the iodine to the breakfast regime with fatty food and lots of salt, to reinforce it

yeah, that is really important i think, especially the thing of getting it to produce a reasonable pdf proof at the end...
i bought a copy of Plato's Timeaus and Critias a while back from amazon and the typography on it was so bad i felt totally ripped off, like someone just printed a dumb pdf with OCR errors onto cheap glue bound book and done, though it was pretty cheap, just awful tho
i don't see any reason why an adequate version can't be encoded in epub format, all the ebook readers i've used with epub3s generate pages that would be adequate on hard copy at their size (small on my phone) and probably wouldn't look bad on a bigger format like an e paper reader
mostly it's just having decent conventions about section markers and for example starting chapters/sections always on an even page and so on, and automatically generated annotations and end-of-chapter, or end-of-book bibliography (this would be better than bottom of page IMO) and i'm pretty sure there is schemes for generating indexes out of a compiled text, and having all their page numbers correctly noted with the annotations in the bibliography
and other things too, like side-by-side translations where you have odd page is one language even is another, or odd is the text, and even is the annotations, and they stay side by side correctly
of course, watch out for that dirty feature creep but i think those few considerations would make it very possible to pop out beautiful hard copy editions from a complete compiled chapter set of a book... i don't think it's traditionalism or any kind of impractical to insist on having adequate hard copies also... IMO, digital copies suffer from a similar problem as word of mouth recitations, they can be lost forever, but parchments can survive thousands of years

i think it really depends, mostly on the level of money printing, and the health of the economy
it kinda looks like a trend of declining growth into the 2021 but you have to bear in mind that while that was happening half the businesses were shut down, while at the same time the money printer was dialed up to 11
i'm of the opinion that it's going to do a sigma curve because this time around the economy is still fairly strong, businesses are not shut down, we have a few wars but mostly they are only causing a little bit of a problem with some food supply (ukraine and wheat and some other things) and the transit through the Suez is being choked, every other trade route is still functioning and there really hasn't been any major droughts or other big limiters on food markets
but this might be the middle of the curve, so it might be relatively flat, i don't think it's going to shrink as much as the last two progressions expanded, and inflation is high while business is not totally tanking... so i'm still betting on a 250-500k this cycle, 250 is flat (same as 2020) 500k is the start of a sigma curve second half

i think that east and west coast are the most likely targets, the stuff in the middle and in the low population density regions are all going to be fine, whether it be from ICBMs or mobs of looters
i'm preferring the idea of the mountains of the midwest USA because of the relative distance from the many common types of disaster that are likely to increase in frequency over the next few decades, and the fact that it's much easier to defend yourself where access to weapons isn't already nazi germany level controlled, like most of the rest of the english speaking world and europe and asia

nope, don't wear one, literally only smacked my head one time on a bicycle and i hit the wrong brake and ended up needing a stitch because i landed head first in a nice plush lawn with one little rock right where my head struck the ground
i feel like i'm in serious danger if i'm at a velocity that exceeds my ability to break the fall... i had a fall a couple months ago on a steep concrete pavement and i did a pretty good roll as i hit the ground but it was bumpy concrete and i still have a bit of a ding in my knee... but my head didn't touch the ground
IMO, if you need a helmet you might be going too fast, and ok, sure, if you like going fast and don't mind breaking bones and shit sure, wear a helmet, but if you use it as transport and not an extreme sport then it's just stupid, probably also urban design plays a role here because some places just don't give any space for either bicycles or even pedestrians... sometimes it's kinda understandable, like here on the steep slopes of #madeira, very light traffic overall and very few people braving the slopes on a regular basis

so, after some further fixing of realy's auth handling i'm quite sure i have it right but mixed results and seems like actually nobody in client dev land has actually implemented fully working auth
or at least, maybe more exact, the way that auth is implemented as an additional module on strfry relays is not fully correct, and these clients work with that but it is not strict by the protocol
annoying, but just confirms that for my work i really need to have a client dev working closely with me in order to get this part right for a commercially viable nostr-based system
i also have some other gigs going on but i'm just gonna put this auth problem to one side after today for a while again, just fiddle with another few knobs that i might have missed and then move on to important stuff like the import/export feature i have been cooking up

so, now that i can see nostr, bluesky :bluesky: and farcaster 💨 events streaming alongside each other i can make a couple of observations
bluesky is clearly the most active of the three, its outnumber nostr about 3:1 and farcaster 2:1
most of the events on farcaster are likes, and the actual posts themselves, looks like mostly vietnamese, korean, english and russian in about that order of relative frequency, and of the ones in english, 3 out of 4 refer to cryptocurrency in some way, probably it's not so different in the other languages too though it sorta seems like maybe the vietnamese actually have conversations about somethin else than crypto (i didn't bother to translate them, just the lack of crypto dogwhistle words which are probably rendered in english as they are in most languages)
farcaster is definitely primarily a firehose of crypto pump chatter, and very little actual social
bluesky is a lot more varied, sorta similar breakdown in content to what you see on mastodon, probably similar people and probably a lot of overlap between them
nostr has the highest ratio of actual social content and the subject matter is highly varied, though yes bitcoin pops up a lot... definitely nostriches write more original content
mostly anecdotal observations of course, i'm not gonna write a frickin academic paper and do analytics on it, that's just what has caught my eye
