Yeah, I was thinking about that: the "published author" or "recording artist" both used to mean that _someone-not-yourself_ have believed so much in you that they are taking the up-front cost of ensuring your work gets out. But these days those terms mean...well, if not nothing so at least very little.
Yeah, for musicians the costs (after purchasing instruments of course) involves: studio time, unless you have your own facilities (which is actually more common these days than most people think, due to computers and software etc), possibly session musicians (unless you play it all yourself).
To complicate matters, the person who technically is the best to ensure a great recording of an instrument (get it to one "track" in the best possible quality) might not be the best to mix it, so you might need someone to mix/produce it (mixing all/many tracks to create a good balance). Finally you need someone to Master the recording (which really shouldn't be the person mixing it) which will make it sound great in all the possible listening media (car, radio, youtube, spotify, small speaker, large stereo etc).
Then you need someone to take promo photos, (re-)build the web site etc.
If you try to do it all yourself it is usually prone to not sounding great in the end. Sometimes it is "good enough" for the up-and-coming artist to be discovered, and as such a way to get a record deal with a label.
These days music recording tools in computers/iPads etc all have a "publish to YouTube/SoundCloud" button _right there_, and it gets used too often in my opinion (i.e. they get "published" before they should), simply because technology has become so accessible these days. IMHO it "floods" the market, and creates "noise" that can be difficult to sift through unless you're already a fan. Some electronic artists I know have 3000+ releases on their SoundCloud. No sane person keeps listening if the first 5 weren't to their liking. Finding the truly "releasable" ones can be impossible.

Yes, if you have the possibility and perhaps skills to record your own music in a way that you yourself have paid for it (you don't owe anyone else anything), that is the better route to go, as you then also own everything up until the point of figuring out how to distribute it.
The record labels usually have contacts with great producers though, and they can always say "_yeah, what you've done doesn't sound bad. But...it sounds dated...it could be soooo much better if..._" and nigh-on promise it will be the difference between millions of listens compared to thousands, and those are difficult things to measure in your own creation. Not signing can be very difficult for some.
Also it is the matter of marketing, but then again, small labels usually do a really poor job of that anyways. Big labels though, they smooch all the right music journalists and radio stations etc, so it is tricky to get in on that unless you are with the big guys, or you already are a big enough name to carry your own torch.

Yeah, no, it isn't that simple. To confuse everyone completely, the rates are variable to start with. Streams from different user tiers pay the same song differently. Streams in different countries pay the same song differently. It quickly becomes difficult to do any estimate that doesn't involve guesswork.
Secondly, for very (too) many artists the money actually goes to the labels first. THEN the writers of the lyrics and music get split up. Depending on your contracts the label has the distribution as well, but it is more commonly not so, so that money then comes out of that as well.
For people like Rick Beato, who have money and contacts enough to do their own marketing and distribution, the numbers mentioned might apply. For 99.97% of the rest of the musicians, who don't have the money/muscles to distribute physical copies or marketing strength/contacts to "get the word out there", they usually have to pay someone to do it, or more commonly, sign with a label.
If you, via your label, have recorded your music in a quality studio (not cheap), the label will take pretty much 100% of the income from the songs until the studio bill is paid.
It is getting more and more common that artists record "at home" and only sign a distribution deal, but then there's usually less commerce for those songs too. Not many of the "big names" out there are not signed up with labels where they are big enough to dictate their own terms. Most artists cry of joy for getting a label contract that will lock them in for 5 albums (whatever that means in this day and age) and they themselves will get 5% of the money their songs bring in.

One of the things I noticed, when comparing to other cities, is that they don't allow the rent-a-board scooters kind of thing. To me, visiting, that was a massive improvement as it had resulted in a rent-a-bike schemes everywhere that were really convenient (apart from having to download 3-4 separate apps). I went everywhere I wanted to go in Copenhagen, by bike, having flown in. Very nice. Copenhagen is awesome.

Mmm…you say “can”. I’m thinking we should consider if it “should”. I predict a *lot* of spammy broadcasting posts otherwise. People can obviously sift by chosing not to follow those accounts but…
It would make sense to be able to control the audience of a post, that indeed seems to be a requested feature, but personally I fail to see why I should be able to broadcast to “everyone” and then just pick a handful of people who can interact with my post.
The other way around, I am thinking if I limit who can interact with my post, it should **also** *only* be delivered to those people. It kind of “comes with the deal”. It also sounds rather fair (which obviously will be the main reason to why it’ll never happen).
To me, the general rule would be: “if you can read it you can interact with it”.
But that is me. 😄

Grejen är ju att man ställer sig ofta den frågan i vilket fall, omedvetet, och det i sin tur påverkar arbetet man gör.
Hur många känner du som gör/ger 100% på jobbet varje timma, varje dag? Inte jag heller. Det går ju inte. Så man justerar och prioriterar så mycket som man kan komma undan med. “Vad är viktigt idag” osv.
Om man istället hade tid för att göra det man dagdrömmer om när man tillåter sig själv att inte vara 100% “på” på jobbet så skulle de timmar man faktiskt är effektiv på jobbet inte påverkas nämnvärt i många fall…man gör det redan, men många sitter garanterat av tid motsvarande 1/5 på sina jobb (om de är ärliga mot sig själva).
Andra saker som kan vara relevanta: <li>Man kan inte tänka snabbare, ens om man övar.</li><li>9 kvinnor kan inte klämma fram en baby på 1 månad. En del saker tar den tid det tar, och måste få göra det.</li><li>Det är i princip omöjligt att tvinga fram kreativt tänkande under långa perioder ifall man inte ger möjlighet till att skaffa ny input/inspiration.</li><li>Kommunikation och koordinering “kostar” massor med tid och energi. Att slänga mer folk på ett försenat problem/projekt gör oftast att det blir ändå senare.</li>
Jag tror att man i många yrken rätt lätt kan ta bort en arbetsdag och att det inte skulle påverka output negativt, och i flera fall tvärtom, bidra till bättre, högre och mer kvalitativ output.

Faktum är att just det du beskriver är en av faktorerna jag har med i min bedömning när jag (halv-aktivt) tittar efter ny bil. Just nu har vi två bilar helt utan telemetri, centraliserad övervakning osv.
Vi kan åka vart vi vill och lämnar vi telefoner och devices hemma (hah!) så är vi ospårbara.
Inser att det är svårt att köpa en ny bil idag utan de sakerna, och vad värre är, de är oftast riktigt dåligt implementerade, ouppdaterbara och tydligen utvecklade av antingen idioter som inte sett vare sig människor eller bilar (alternativt av en utvecklarstudio med för låg budget och för snäv tidsram).

I’m being informed that FB promptly shuts down and blocks any and all mentions to fact checkers that aren’t their own, which is laughable to start with.
Well, it is laughable unless you are serious about democracy of course. FB’s policy of blocking links to other fact checkers means you can’t post a link that proves a post on a topic is incorrect. The incorrect post itself gets to stay (and the falsification can be shared, re-shared etc), only the correction of it being a lie is blocked.
Great.
I’m happy I am not there much any more (just doing the odd “Happy birthday” greeting these days).

The original is amazing, but this cover of it is very well done indeed! Acapella no less, in a fantastic arrangement, beautifully done.
This guy is doing it with nine channels to cover as much as possible of the original, which says a lot about the original as it is one man (Jon Gomm) and a guitar in one take without overdubs.

I obviously agree. I have reflected on my learnings though over what could be improved, but the main discrepancy I found was that I was thinking “users” were the most important cog in the fediverse machinery, when it in reality is instances (that happen to have users). It was an “Ooohh…aha…”-realisation-moment for me.

I *used* to think like that. So I set up two separate single-user instances, mostly because I could but also because I was thinking it’d speed up my selection process on which service to use (I ended up using both, and then some). I was thinking I contributed to the main goals of federation, which in my mind equaled decentralization. I was wrong.
I have since learnt though that the goals of Mastodon, the by far largest Fedi service, is not that. In the Fediverse we centralize, and are encouraged to do so, on just a handful of instances. They in turn federate with each other, so it is most definitely not the same as, say, Twitter et al, but it is also not encouraging *both* federation *and* decentralization.
In fact, if you (like you and I) are running your own single-user/small instance, there is a huge up-hill battle that will require/demand stamina, skills and to be able to endure lots (months) of lonely hours where literally no one replies to you (as you simply can’t be seen). A lot of how AP works, and Mastodons interpretation of it along with its default settings, directly punishes small instances in general, and even more so single-user instances.
The Fediverse is built around instances, not users. Those instances are meant to be central points that will forever grow with new users, and they federate with other known (big) instances.
The culture is that if you run a huge instance = great. If you run a small instance = you are likely a bad person. Join a big instance = congrats, just follow the rules set by someone else, and hope they don’t get burnt out and/or close you down. Start your own small instance = boooo.

När jag bodde i London bjöd en annan svensk kompis/kollega på surströmming hemma hos en tredje kompis (från Sydafrika, men boendes i fina villakvarter i London). Ingen jättesucce. När burk och stor del av innehåll skulle slängas packades den in i dubbla plastpåsar och husets ägare gick 2-3 kvarter bort för att slänga.
När vi vaknade dagen efter (en sjujäkla fest) och drog oss hemåt såg vi att polisen kommit med stort pådrag och sökhundar ganska precis där burkarna slängts. Vi sade inget, kollade på varandra och gick raskt därifrån. 🤣

Right. So normally I keep my testing accounts on various services to following my other testing accounts on various services.
With all these bridges going public though I am noticing I am adding you all both here and “there” (wherever that might be) on both your Fediverse account and your local account “there”. If you are wondering why I’m following you from multiple accounts that is.
Normally I keep the “following of all accounts” to a few friends who are clued up on that I do A LOT of testing (and they often do the same), but I am noticing my lines are getting blurred right now, so it might be that I follow YOU multiple times now. That is how it is, for now.
So yeah, I have accounts on most Fediverse services and also BlueSky and Nostr. This (very account) is my “home” though.

Otherwise they would all recognize Taiwan as the country it is, and has been, for the last 40 years. China wouldn’t really be able to stop trading with everyone at the same time. One at a time though…
