Agreed, especially because I suffer from vertigo and tend to tip when near dramatic drops (I'll crawl on my belly to look over 😆).
It was fascinating to watch, and he never knew I was there (I didn't want to startle him). I never saw or heard any evidence of someone else, which was odd, but there was a rope visible. I know it builds extraordinary calf muscles.

Yes! It was almost startling when I'd stop and—silence. In places where it was packed, I'd hear the back of my snowshoes drag over ridges, then crunch.
Like hiking with Cookie Monster.
Shortly after this video, I climbed to where it was virtually virgin snow and the crunch became muted.
The most difficult was where people had cross-country skied (they were mostly elsewhere). Their track was narrow, so my snowshoes would move freely on the inside, but drag on the outside. 😃 ❄️

I am tired after a wonderful day spent hiking in Pattee Canyon. The views were modest, but it was an excellent place to learn to use snowshoes.

Snowshoeing for the 1st time on a trail. I went to Pattee Canyon and covered 4-miles (6.4K).
It was amazing, and snowed the entire time, though the sun attempted to shine a couple of times.

Mostly trying to avoid the news that causes the anxiety that, partly, I hike to relieve. But also all my editing & the household chores always waiting for me.
I'm learning hard lessons here. The path was about six inches of powder with ice beneath. No wonder no one was walking on it. Meanwhile, in my scatterbrained haste, I'd left behind everything I needed.
There were a lot of very un-lady-like words uttered in the forest that were directed at myself.

I need to set aside distractions and figure-out how to attach them to my pack. I failed to do that two days ago, left them behind, and deeply regretted it. The trailhead (after hiking 2.5 miles just to get there) was near the university. I thought it'd be trampled. It wasn't.

It is. I still remember a buck walking down the trail ahead of me once. I often see ducks in irrigation ditches. The river is on three sides here so this is a bit of a peninsula. The irrigation water flows across and back into the river. Last year, I glimpsed a beaver in the ditch, the only one I’ve ever seen in the wild before.

You can count on it, Tim. I didn't want to come home. It was also an experiment, me becoming acquainted with winter hiking. I was more than adequately attired, but discovered the old pack that gets me by in summer fails in winter.
The packed snow meant that traction wasn't a problem, but I am now wondering about carrying snowshoes with me (which I now have, along with poles). Do you strap them to the outside of your pack until you need them?

I took my 2.2 mile (3.5K) walk on the Milwaukee Trail. It wasn’t exactly busy.
It was 2F (16.7C). Taking off my outer glove to take the picture was a race against time.
Otherwise, it was perfectly warm.

That's actually great to hear because that's kind of what I'm doing.
This is my first winter venturing beyond the local trail (2023 was my return to hiking, in general). I've thus far, I encountered minimal snow in December, then earlier this month hiked along the Clark Fork River.
Other hikes along other rivers are possible, and more rugged, but still largely level. The next step beyond that is Rattlesnake Creek.

Thanks, Tim. I've gotten in a rut and really need to get out for a snow hike. I tend to be spontaneous depending on the capricious weather here, but first need to purchase, well, a lot, but keep procrastinating.
I am curious…how do you carry water when it's at freezing or below?

33F here and snowing. In December, no matter how high the chance for snow, it didn’t happen. Now, it snows whether they forecast it or not. I don’t think they know what they’re doing. A walk in the snow will bring me joy, and today is all about trying to find joy.

I’ve thought about it, but the almost invisible ice is super thin and patchy. I’d grind them down to nothing in short order walking over two miles every single day. It’s a whole lot less expensive to just walk on the grass or gravel. It’s all about state, then city, budget cuts. I think they’ll sand it, but it’s going to require snow.

I love this. This, this right here, is the hike I want to experience—and I will when the weather cooperates. After all, we have so many local rivers, not to mention streams. When the snow line drops, I'll hike along Rattlesnake Creek or investigate the lakes to the northeast.

It’s always a treat to view them from the west, much of which is tribal land. It’s one instance where Native Americans received a halfway decent deal from the federal government. The lack of foothills always reminds me of the Tetons.

Thanks. We're warmer now than we were at the beginning of the month. Then again, last winter we were unusually warm and then, in mid January, we couldn't climb above zero (I actually walked when it was -12F…it was thrilling!)
Things are hectic right now, but I may hike between the holidays. At the least, I'll be heading north on Christmas Day and the spectacular Mission Mountains will be on full display.

Thank you. I noticed on my morning walk that the snow line had dropped to less than 1,000 feet above the city. Now, though, they aren’t visible.

Thank you. I do love the snow, and normally I don't have to drive in it unless I want to, but tomorrow is the huge craft fair at the university and I don't want to miss that.
Snow on the trail is one thing. Snow with crazy drivers is another. 😆
