When it is well managed, a finished pile of compost has a much higher Carbon ratio than Nitrogen.
Compost works wonderfully for the soil because the microbiology in our soil eats that carbon and turns it into nutrients for the plants.
For too long we have been focused on giving the plants the nutrients they need, the famous NPK... But this is why our tomatoes don't taste good anymore because we can't produce the other nutrients that the plants need.
For that, we need to focus on feeding carbon to the life in the topsoil. They are our helpers for the garden and we need to stop destroying them.

To the question Can you compost urine? Here is the answer.
It has to be diluted with water and it can be used when you start a compost pile as an activator to introduce bacteria to the pile.
Remember that a compost pile is a farm of bacteria, without them it will take months to decompose.

Trench composting is a very old method for doing compost if you have a garden but you do not want to install a compost heap.
The native Americans used to do this so it is not new. But be aware of 2 things:
- it will attract rodents and unwanted visitors to your garden.
- if you let seeds they will sprout everywhere.
Also, compost by definition should be aerobic so I liked this video a lot because the compost is not being buried.

Compost IS NOT soil.
It does not contain the vast number of minerals in the soil that the plants need to survive.
The compost that we create mimics the topsoil, it is an amendment that helps the plants get nutrients. And it is certainly not what you call "dirt".
The compost has to be mixed with the soil, microbiology is your helper that will do the work for you.

In a worm bin what they will do if they do not like something is to bring it to the surface of the compost.
This is why when you open your bin one of the first things to do is check what is on top to remove it.

If we talk so much about shredding the organic matter in the compost pile, it is because know from experience that not doing this makes the decomposition process a lot slower.
We have noticed that every time we shred our green and brown material it takes no time for this organic matter to be turned into compost.

The system we use here for our main compost pile is called a wedge system.
We use composting worms to process all the waste we can feed them.
The goal is to create a feeding zone to feed the worms and move them around to a harvest zone where you can just pick up the compost when it is done.

Shred some paper into really small pieces, soak it in water, and distribute this material into your bin.

I grew up in an area that once was occupied France.

Someone from the community asked me lately about our composting routine.
It is a lot of preparation as I spend time collecting brown material and shredding them for the carbon pile. Collecting leaves or wood chips is as well part of this routine.
As soon as I have enough green material available, I sort then to avoid labels and then I shred them. The goal is to have a compost ready a lot faster.
Then I go to the pile with one volume of greens and one volume of browns. I always burry the compostables in the pile to not attract unwanted visitors.
I check the moisture level, I check the compaction by turning the piles and I check how are the composting worms.
This is done if not daily at least every other day depending on the volumes of greens available.

I have not, my routine is a lot of preparation work. I spend a lot of time preparing brown material ahead of time in a separate pile.
The goal is to be able to balance any amount of green material that makes it possible to avoid creating bad smells.
The daily routine is to check the moisture level especially as we are in the middle of a heatwave, the oxygen as well is checked daily to make sure the pile is not compacted and turned anaerobic. We do not check the temperatures as we are doing cold compost.

Have you considered doing aerated static compost piles if you are not doing this already?
The point of this method is to use pipes to insert air into the piles. What is great about this is that you don't have to turn it on and you can also control the heat because with the air you put into the piles, you can heat the temperatures. Sadly, composting is not a fix-it-and-forget-it solution.
The weather will affect your compost piles, you have to check the moisture levels very often, especially in the summer. You also have to turn it as often as you can to not generate those greenhouse gasses. You also have to check the temperature of your piles if you want them to go into the thermophilic stages. You also have to watch for the quality and quantity of your inputs.
Yes, it is time-consuming but it is an investment that is worth the work. The satisfaction of applying a finished compost in the gardens is an incredible feeling.

If you want to learn more about how to compost with composting worms, I have one YouTube channel I would like to recommend.
The channel Plant Obsessed is unique because of the bins they use for their vermicompost. They use a 55-USgallon barrel cut in half.
This system allows a feeding area and a very interesting harvest area. We have a similar system here and it produces an insane amount of compost. We have other bins as well but this system of giant bins is the way to go for us.
They post a video every Sunday and the owner of the channel is very savvy when it comes to worm castings. You will learn a lot.

It is still #PrideMonth and we would like to insist on the fact that celebrating who you are as a person has nothing to do with sexuality.
Being a member of the #LGBTQIA community also means that you can be #Asexual. I am #ace and I don't feel any sexual attraction to others.
So you can be a #trans person as I am. I am a woman born into the body of a man and have no interest in sex whatsoever.

If mulching lawnmowers worked, we would see it when we have to face a #heatwave like we are having here.
The clippings would work as a mulch and keep the roots of your grass cool. Instead, they are being burned and make it look like this yellow/brown mess.
If you want to protect your grass, mow it tall and bag your clippings. Then apply some compost in the spring to help your roots get nutrients. Water it with moderation.

Here we notice the change and we have to deal with it, it is not a question of feelings. This is why I am so pissed off who says I feel this I feel that. Feelings are irrelevant.

We also have livestock that is more aggressive and stressed than usual because of the heat, we can tell by plenty of little details that it is not normal.

Right now where we live we are feeling the intensity of what a #heatwave caused by the #climatechange looks like.
Mid-June we are having temperatures full sun that are over 100°F/38°C. It is not normal for this time of year at our location.
It is not an easy thing to tend a garden in those conditions as most veggies won't handle those temperatures.
We could not give less of a damn about what people's "feelings" are when it comes to the #climate. When we have to tend a garden year-round we notice changes.
What this tells me is that because farmers will have more harsh conditions to grow, the prices of food are not going to go down any time soon.
This is what denying the #climatecrisis is costing us and it is just one example.
Needless to say, deniers are going to be blocked and reported, we don't care about what you feel is right.

I have been following this #nodig gardener on YouTube for several years now and his experience on several #climate is very insightful.
If you live in an area where temperatures can be extreme in the summer, you need to mulch your no-till beds.
Compost as a mulch works great but has limitations.

Happy summer #solstice it is the longest day of the year and also a very hot day here as we are here under a #heatwave.
To my stupefaction, it is those same people who say drill it at some conservative rally who are the first to complain about the weather and unusual #climatechange events when it comes to affecting them.

We are just starting with fruit trees, to keep them fine we make sure to mulch them quite deep and we fertilize them with worm castings, our trees are still young and I hope they do well.

We are in the middle of a painfully hot heatwave in the southeast of the US. It has not rained for days.
Stay hydrated and watch for the symptoms of dehydration that are headaches or feeling cold.
Check the humidity in your compost heap and make sure it is not too dry. Simply soak some shredded papers in water and add them to the pile to fix the moisture levels. You also should keep it mulched with carbon material.
