we have a bit of code that runs background jobs which are allowed to fail sometimes, which we call fireAndForget. in the test environment, it keeps a list of all the jobs its tried to do so we can assert later that they did in fact succeed
the function that checks up on them is called listenForForgottenPromises and it's just occured to me now how poetic that name is

the cybersecurity training that work wants me to do is presented by a fake AI. they're trying to do a cute bit but honestly please don't, but also, presenting your class about why you shouldn't believe anything an AI tells you as coming from an AI pretty strongly undercuts the message

I wonder if anyone's studying covid folk wisdom — now that there's essentially zero official guidance or acknowledgement, I hear a lot of stuff, mostly on here, about it. Clearly some of it is obviously sensible and probably correct, and some of it sounds alarmist but might be correct, I don't know. I reckon someone could do a really interesting PhD in where these ideas come from and how they spread given we have this uniquely digitised record of a whole bunch of new beliefs about the same thing springing up around the same time.

I discovered today that this checkbox exists and it's amazing because it makes using a Mac about 30% less insuffrable.
Pretty sure this was the default setting ten years ago and they changed it for some reason to the current, unfathomable default.
In short, this makes Mission Control show app names and icons by default instead of inviting you to squint at a dozen tiny, white rectangles to work out which you want. You know. Like Windows and Gnome do.
