On improving mental health services especially for children, they just wanna blame lockdowns and ban kids from phones, or maybe tax social networks to pay for councilors.
They all think the internet is to blame rather than the pressures of poverty and capitalism.
Gary on the other hand has been open in his book about his own mental health, and does blame poverty and that working a job won't even give you enough to feed your kids.
Earlier generations were able to earn enough to have a family and a house, and modern kids can't, that is why he thinks they're all struggling. Because they face a bleak economic future.

On the question of how to respond to Trumps Tariffs, Gary just doesn't know. Maybe take some of the money that's flowing to US Tech companies but not details on how to do that.
Some suggest that Brexit has a benefit here, that rather than standing in solidarity with the rest of Europe we should negotiate a special deal just for us, by giving him what he wants, whatever that is.

Nobody even aware of Cory Doctorow's plan of removing the protections that prevent reverse engineering and forced competitive compatibility.

Watched BBC Question Time since Gary Stephenson was on it. He's great of course.
Everyone else is exactly the same as why I stopped watching. The panel filled with pompous bootlickers and wankers who defend the status quo and the rich, even as they attack each other.
The audience full of barely coherent idiots whose questions miss the point where they make any sense at all.
The panel other than him is unanimous that Wealth Taxes can't work because they've been tried in some places, and those places then stop trying after a while.
I mean the obvious reason for that is that wealth taxes affect the rich and the rich run the country, so they stop those policies that effectively reduce their wealth.
Strange to jump to the conclusion that it's because they're ineffective.

Shortly the chancellor of the exchequer will do a budget in which she's expected to cut a wide range of benefits and allowances and generally try and balance the books by taking from the poor to give to the rich.
Rachel the reverse Robinhood.
They won't call it Austerity, because that name is poisoned and they promised not to do anything called that, but that's what it is.
It won't work.
Duh.
Making the poor masses poorer reduces spending in the economy, which reduces government receipts, and makes the deficit bigger not smaller.
Austerity never works. Can't work.
If balancing the books matters it really needs to be done by taxing the rich to spend on the poor, so that the poor spend the money into the economy and grow the economy to increase the government receipts.
The rich end up with the money anyway, once the poor spend it. They always do.
Cutting from the poor to avoid taxing the rich just means more money goes into overseas tax havens and into pumping up the untaxed prices of assets for the rich. No growth, except in asset prices and the hordes of the owner class.
You'd hope a left wing government would get this, but of course Starmer's Labour aren't a left wing government, they are just more tory.

Today is Online Safety Day because the terrible awful Online Safety Law comes into affect this month.
To me, Online Safety means:<li>Never use your government name on the internet.</li><li>Use fully end to end encrypted services like Signal.</li><li>Avoid using large online surveillance projects like Facebook, Instagram or Whatsapp.</li><li>Self-host wherever possible to protect your data from Big Tech.</li><li>Alter your software to block ads, use ad-blockers everywhere.</li><li>Use a VPN to help subvert tracking technology.</li><li>Avoid allowing the algorithms decide what you see. Turn off autoplay, use RSS.</li>
But the government, and most of the callers to talk radio today, seem to think it means:<li>All sites must ID check their users to ensure they aren't children.</li><li>Encryption must have government back doors so the police and state can read all messages.</li><li>Only big tech sites are legitimate because they are more subject to legal control.</li><li>Self hosting should be legally onerous so that only big companies with huge legal compliance departments can run internet sites.</li><li>It should be illegal to alter the software made by big business.</li><li>VPNs should be illegal since they can avoid government blocks.</li>

The word "Algorithm" seems to be evolving a second meaning. In the context of defining the difference between social media sorting systems, "the algorithm" is an opaque system built by advertising companies with nefarious intent designed to manipulate a person in to engagement, and to political and purchase decisions.
As usual with language, you'd pick a better word if you could design the language instead of having to let it evolve in a messy contradictory way.
Even without that second meaning though, the phrase "No algorithm imposing posts on us" is true for Mastodon at least. The things in your feed are chosen, not imposed. Even those boosted are boosted by your followers not by advertisers or political manipulators or the owners of the site. The key word is "imposing".

I think they've likely got a second instance of the AI itself monitoring the output with instructions to delete if it is sensitive. They'd need too many people to watch all the output from every request.
Friends running the model locally report to me that the machine is happy enough to write about Tienanmen Square and it's source in protests for more democracy, it's only the online version doing the censoring really.

Yeah, I set up a PDS for a day or two. Seemed entirely pointless given that the data needed to go into a relay in order to do anything other than sit on my own machine, not even readable in my web browser.
Those are more like leaves than nodes really. Like clients communicating with the real node, the relay. I ditched it.
Might be some point in it if it had a web front end to at least display the posts it holds without going via the full bluesky index. Maybe this Free Our Feeds thing will build one of them.

If I boost your message it looks like an "Announce" message is sent from my server to my followers, who then ask your server for the contents.
But if my follower's server already has a cache of your message the server will just send that cache to the followers.
So it's fetched by my followers from your server rather than being addressed to my followers from your server.
So yeah, your server is gonna be dealing with load.

I also think it might be useful to include net change to working age population in the stats. If net migration is half a million, and a million retire, that's misleading people into thinking there are more workers bidding for jobs when really there are fewer.

When landowners were given tax-breaks on their farms in the 1980s, land became valuable for more than just the land.
Ownership of the land becomes a tax-hedging scheme, which inflates it's price.
When Clarkson bought his farm, he paid more for it than it's really worth, because it came bundled with a tax-avoidance system.
I can't say if he wanted it primarily in order to avoid taxes, that's for him and his accountants to know. Perhaps he'd rather it'd been cheaper and properly taxed.
But investment corporations surely are are pushing up the price of land because of this, making land a monetary asset rather than just valued by the productive capacity.
Soon farming families are priced out, and the land is owned primarily by tax-avoidance corporations and gentry, who rent the the land to the farmers.
Now the tax-dodge goes almost entirely to the rich, and working farmers pay them rent for the privilege.
Is concentration of wealth in monopolistic capital a side-effect of a well-intentioned scheme to help farmers? Or is it a deliberate act from the part of capital to increase it's own power and riches?
Hard to say, that's for the Conservatives and their accountants to know, but we can still reverse the effect before it's too late.

The radio is telling me campaigners think the safeguards in the new bill aren't strong enough but they are exactly backwards and wrong.
The safeguards are too stringent, and the rule where you have to have less than six months left to live is wrong. The longer you may have to suffer painful torture, the more urgent ending that suffering could be.
I kinda expected they would sort out assisted dying in time for the boomers to use it but this isn't it.
If this bill is law in 40 years or whatever when it's my turn to end my suffering, I will still have to ensure I do it nice and early, before I become incapable and need help to do it. I will still be forced to do it alone and unaided.

Congratulations to Kemi Badenoch who is now the leader of the Conservative party.
Apparently she thinks the party has veered towards the political centre by “governing from the left” and must return to its traditional ideas.
Which I would describe as an absolutely batty opinion counter to observable facts about Brexit and Culture-war battles and the corruption and scandal that actually drove the party from power.
So sounds like she'll be working hard to make the party more irrelevant and drive away any voters who aren't rabid hate-filled crazy people.
Good times for the other parties I guess.
Expect they'll change leader again before the next election though.

My actual favorite Desktop Computer software program ever written is still Blender.
It's fast and manages incredible levels of complexity with a UI that is better than any window-manager I've ever used and an API that's just "you can type python into the window here" levels of integration.
Amazing.
Blender is to video/audio/3d-polygon-modelling as Vim is to text-editing.
It's the actual top of the list of my free-software-real-money-donations list each month.
I like blender more than I like almost all of the actual people who are likely to read this.
It's one of the few projects not yet infected by corporatism or capitalism or enshitification or in-group squabbling.
But, man, that's a lot of videos in your youtube RSS feed during conference week eh?
So much stuff going on.
I actually literally can't keep up.

Facebook say they are "Responsibly and transparently" feeding all their user's data into their giant AI oracle so it can answer questions about any of it.
I've been logging in once a year to post a reminder I've left and point the way out of there.
Decided this will be the last year, and that I will delete the history and the old dead account too now.

Well, the institutions of state are structurally racist such that they would have racist outcomes even if nobody in them had racist beliefs.
Plus about a third of the people do indeed have those racist beliefs. Maybe more within said institutions.
The last government was deliberately stoking racism in order to use migrants as a scape-goat to cover for their looting the nation.
The country's history is of an empire founded pretty much explicitly on racism and exploitation.
But other than that, we're not a racist country.

One of the things I'm finding myself most conflicted about lately is that I've always thought copyright was bullshit, and that the pirates are the only hope to keep our human culture free from the corporations owning and enclosing even the very thoughts in our head.
The pirates will preserve the culture, while the coporates would sooner culture dies so they can sell us new things that they can charge rent on.
But then it's also the only weapon we have against these big AI machines slurping up all the ideas ever and then belching out mixups of them to drown out all real thought and human feeling on the web.
The machines are born in such copyright debt that they can't possibly ever repay it, and yet copyright itself is corporate bollocks trying to enclose and commodify human culture implying that ideas could be owned and traded in a market.
I suspect the resolution is that the courts will find, as usual, that whoever has the most money wins. So the corporate machines will be able to read whatever they want, and only the humans will have to pay to read a book.
Which shows indeed, copyright is bullshit, the machines won't even actually be held to it, because it was always just corporate enclosure not actually reward-the-artists fairness.

I don't think "no big brother is watching" will continue to be true even if it were true today.
They'll be fed into either a legal AI or an illegal AI at some point.
I once believed nobody I knew in real life would ever be on the internet. Then they were. Actually literally all of them. The only reason they never read my usenet diaries is that actually nobody cares. If the global panopticon came to care, they would not be hard to find.
If your posts auto-delete you have a better chance. But still not much.
I like it here, it's where we own our means of communication more than anywhere else, but these words I'm typing are going into the public global archive. Just like yours did, even if you have authorized fetch and later send a delete request. They will end up in an AI brain.

He suggested to me that I get a PineTime once, and then I fell into a deep hole of programming it with WaspOS and MicroPython for a month or two. Nothing else could hold me interest all through January.
Now I have a one of a kind watch running software nobody else in the world runs and an understanding of tiny memory-footprint constraints in a Micropython environment.
Sure, it's great, but I'll never get that month back.

Labour has changed, so they no longer want change, they want stability.
Stability will be achieved by:
* Tough spending rules to avoid inflation.
* No tax rises on working people
* Cutting NHS waiting times
* Border security cops
* New National Energy Company
* Half a new teacher for each school.
Starmer says "Stability" really a lot.
He wants to create economic growth, as number 1 priority. How?
* Reform employment law, more employment rights and higher wages
* Reform investment systems, national wealth fund to invest in steel and jobs.
* Reform planning rules, so we can build more.
* Being Pro Business
* Tax oil & gas to pay for new British Energy company.
* Chase tax-avoiders to pay doctors & nurses

What we have here is basically a promise to be like the Conservatives only less chaotic and broken and a bit more caring.
No radical ambition, no blue-sky suggestions, no desire to reform the country other than replacing the people at the top with less corrupt people.
Primarily, they want growth by fiddling with regulations to encourage the private sector.
They will not do extra taxes on people, they will not do big spending, they want stability not change. They've already changed.
Which is exactly what the last 3 prime tory prime ministers said they wanted too.
It isn't that a national wealth fund investing in a national energy company is a bad idea, it's just that it's unambitious and on such a tiny scale it can't really affect anything.

Well now that the internet is fucked up and filled with robot bastards it can be hard to tell if you're speaking to a normal human or a cock-spunk of a cyber cunt.
The only way to be sure is to constantly swear your fucking face off in ways that the language model spam-wankers have been trained to reject.
As a result I have sworn to swear, taken an oath of obscenity, using my potty mouth to persuade people of my personhood.
Hopefully we will see a fucking ton of coarsening of the discourse until even gentle conversations between mother and child will be littered with expletives such as a sailor might swear to reassure them each that they have genuine affection for each other and aren't just a script programmed to lead you on.
