Update on the guy who sold his house to live in his Cybertruck and go to every state: I owe him an apology for when I said he wouldn't make it out of Texas. He did in fact make it out of Texas, and through New Mexico, and into Denver, where his truck is now in the service center. Last update was May 8th where he said he'll be in Denver for at least another week while it's in the service center. Haven't found any videos or posts from him since. He lives in Denver now I guess, congrats man.

Periodic reminder that Kagi, despite having an image of being a no bullshit search engine, is almost entirely focused right now on developing AI bullshit, including misguided ideas like a news feed that uses AI to decide if news articles are good (as in healthy) for you to read.
I see it come up so often when people are offering suggestions in response to Google's increasing LLM shit, if you have a problem with LLM/AI garbage, Kagi is fully committed to making more of it, but it's hard to know that if you don't lurk in their discord.

Right now I'll stick to the hardware I have but I really need to look at some point for different presence sensors, I probably need something wallmounted with a limited viewing angle...basically I want something that is going to detect people but not the dogs, so I need it to only look from a certain height up. Because currently the dogs keep turning the living room lights on.

Anyway my advice is if you want to try growing vegetables and the internet makes it seem too complicated for you, just try it. It's not even that expensive to try out, every discount store has ten thousand bags of potting soil and cheap pots/planters right now and a lot of plants will do just fine in those. Fuck you can convert big tote bins into planters easily. You don't have to go full raised bed permanent structure your first try.
But I promise it's not that hard to grow most things. Go online and find a planting calendar for your area, that's 90% of the external research you need. Because you mostly want to make sure you aren't gonna plant stuff too early or too late and get hit by frost. But there's plenty of websites that will tell you when to plant what. You can then buy the plants already started (you don't have to get into seedlings day one) and put them in the dirt, and water them, and make sure they have sun, and most of the time you'll end up with something you can eat at the end. Every old person in my area grows vegetables and has never once worried about the specific chemical makeup of their soil or perfectly controlling the moisture of the soil down to the exact percent. They put their tomatoes in dirt and water them and then pick the tomatoes later.

@npub1mp3…qjxj I really need to build some specialized shelving for some of my tools, I don't mind putting my spokeshaves on a pegboard (both of mine are like the ones on the bottom of yours where there's holes) but I have some tools that just do not work with a pegboard and need some organizing.
I converted a small cabinet I ripped out of a bathroom when I moved in into shelving for my planes but I haven't gotten my dad out to help me hang it on the wall, it's too heavy to do alone.

Honestly I definitely played around with incorporating a Palm into my daily life as a fun little tech experiment as a retro tech enthusiast but...I think what makes it something I may keep doing long term is the lack of distraction. I'm your typical ADHD haver I get easily off task. If I use my phone for a to-do list or taking notes, I'm gonna be in discord or something the second a notification pops up. A PDA keeps me on the task I'm on.
If I upgrade to the model with wifi I could get those benefits from things like email reading as well.

This kind of thing is exactly, exactly what I think about when people say fedi is bad because what if your admin suddenly decides to close the instance down and your account is just gone?
Your account can just be obliterated at any time with no recourse on all of the corporate sites too, sorry. If your account is that sensitive (say, if your business relies on it) you need to self host. Whether that's self hosting a fedi platform or just having your own website, you cannot rely on social media ANYWHERE for anything sensitive to you. This isn't a fedi problem like some believe.

I saw a thread the other day basically talking about how we need to bring back Yahoo style directories and the best way to go about that and I think a lot of people are trying to way over engineer it.
Why not start small? If you have a blog, make your own page with a directory of your best sources for the topics that interest you. Then we either webring that shit or compile them later. But this is something you can start with now, you can go out this week and compile your best sources. You can link to other people's directories you find useful and create a network. Then if someone wants to curate all that into "Xahoo.com" later then we've got a head start. We don't need to fuss around over the tech, we need the information.

Cohost's financial update is a poster child for what I and others have been saying for a long time now: the internet won't survive without decentralization. You can't just make the next Twitter or Reddit or Tumblr. That's a joke. Cohost was against decentralization but they've now learned why centralization isn't feasible: only massive corporations with infinite VC can afford it, and they hemorrhage that money and close eventually too.
The internet is too expensive to work this way and it won't long term. We just got complacent while there was enough VC to go around. It's pets dot com again. It doesn't last.
And this isn't even about AP/fedi, while I like fedi this is true with or without it. We have to go back to having websites. Not The(tm) website for whatever, but lots of them. If you don't want to go to more than one? Too bad, it's how things will be regardless. Having One website isn't sustainable for corporations and isn't even vaguely feasible for little guys.
You have to have lots of websites. I can run a small community for a bit of my entertainment budget for the month or donations from a handful of users who like what I'm running. You can run a mastodon instance for a small crowd for very little. You can run a website off an old laptop laying around. You cannot run a 130k user site and pay you and your friends $94k a year to run it. It's not sustainable. I wish it was. It isn't. Sites have to stay small, and there have to be enough of them spread out to spread out the financial load to hobbyist levels. Sorry that you can't make a living running a site for your friends to hang out on, but it's just how the math works out. Reddit can't make money doing it, Twitter can't make money doing it, Patreon can't...they only survive on being Huge Corporations Who Can Bleed Money. You can replicate bleeding money on a small scale all you want but I wouldn't advise it. You can however run a forum for your friends for the cost of Netflix or whatever.

With the reddit drama going on I see a lot of people new to fedi coming in giving advice on how to succeed. Fedi already succeeded. They just have the wrong ideas about what fedis goals were in the first place.

Another question from someone who knows enough to use #Linux as a daily driver but is hardly a Linux pro: my OS lets me back up whatever folders I want to restore later in the case of some sort of failure. Aside from my personal files, are there any specific Linux config files/folders that would be smart to back up in case I somehow fuck them up later? Like I know one day I fucked my $PATH up with a typo, luckily that wasn't the hardest to fix but if you were going to pick some system level stuff to back up to be able to restore later, what sorts of things would you include?
