I haven't really shared on the public timeline here about it yet because I wanted to play with it more before posting, but I recently acquired the WARBL2, made by an individual down in Bend Oregon, which amounts to a MIDI tin whistle (given the extra buttons you can key it like a recorder, clarinet, the saxophones I grew up playing, whatever)
And so anyway, this toot and that gadget make me curious if one can use MIDI data to do PAM authentication and replicate what you saw.... 😄

Yeah, Starlink is a means to keep income rolling in while exploring far-flung places you were already motivated enough to tough it out to get to, IMO, it's not suddenly going to make Alaska be as populous as California. The cold, the dirt roads, having to plan food/water supplies, etc. are still barriers to entry. Closer to home, I mean, jeez, in the Puget Sound boating groups, half the people in there are scared to be more than an hour from a diesel pump. You're probably fine.

And getting someone to jump the fence from nights/weekends to full-time, requires that funding, and usually requires some degree of confidence that that funding will be stable for some amount of time. That's human nature - we gotta pay bills/eat.
And so that's why I tend to hold that we can't blanket hold FOSS to "maintainership standards", unless we're offering up funding, up-front, to allow someone to make it their job. (wanted to provide context to my GP comment)

Now, I know your underlying point is that we should be reducing that 95% to, well, some lower number. But I think we've seen that - barring some standout exceptions (Sourcehut, Gleam, SerenityOS, etc.), it's *culturally* extremely difficult, borderline not possible, to fund developers at reasonable rates for FOSS. It's been, what, 7-8+ years since the fiasco with NPM post-install notices asking for donations that got shut down?

Paid open source is a total different ballgame that very, VERY few people are playing. It plays by different rules entirely than what I imagine is 90-95% of FOSS, which is basically folks pitching their nights and weekends in to scratching whatever itches they have.
If someone's paying me for a tool and I've advertised it as a Product ™ and not just a thing you can buy me a beer/coffee for as thanks, then yes, I have customers and responsibilities.
Otherwise I have beer.

I have a written "I don't mind holding the bus until Friday for you to come check it out and see if you want to commit to it" and two one-way plane tickets between Seattle and Boise booked (each refundable in case I buy the bus, or in case the entire thing completely goes to hell and I never even go).
Wow. I might end next week owning a 24 foot school bus to convert into a tiny house on wheels. This has gone from "intrusive thought returned to my mind" to action items real quick.

Most PC soundcards share two traits:
- Noisy as fuck wiring / poor isolation (PCB traces just jammed wherever they fit, for example)
- Dismal amp stage power which tends to lead to limp bass and sluggish transients (quick snapping/punching notes)
Don't ask me too much beyond that, you're more qualified than me overall. But I wanted to somewhat support your hypothesis that it's bass, and share with passers-by who read this thread :)

I was about to ask what was wrong with FastMail given I remembered we were both happy customers of theirs, and then I saw the "fine, the workers decided to unionize? we'll just fire the whole union instead" post like three toots down

though at this point this is fully what I expect as an outcome to all unionization efforts. US business culture is pretty zero-tolerance of net-new unions these days (see also, bandcamp, google fledgling efforts, starbucks, etc.)

Last boost, where JCS added USB ports to his Thinkpad (https://jcs.org/2024/05/29/x1usb), is both beautiful in the "this is real hacking, y'all" kinda way, and disgusting, in the "fuck PC manufacturers for thinking they should have any right to control how end users use hardware that they paid over one thousand US dollars for" kinda way.
(obviously if it's some corporate/government issued machine arguments can be made, but for anything sold to ordinary consumers, fuck you, Lenovo, for M.2 allow-lists).
