I see Lego mentioned here. While I disagree with their choice in reporting I do suspect the above had a role there: they're big, but not "evil medicine-producer Novo" or Apple big. And their globally applied diversity and sustainability policies are just about the opposite of Musk/Trumps ideals.

Especially with companies with a large number of local (US) employees and/or production I suspect many of them will not change anything in their procedures and approach to sustainability (which is conveniently left out in conversation but also attacked) and diversity except for being more neutral in communication. Actions vs. words.
If you're Apple you can raise a middle finger to this shit (shame them for not doing so), but much smaller companies will have a hard time balancing.

There's a number of long established political pages* where US editors recently put dispute tags on (triggering the disclaimer: 'This article's factual accuracy is disputed'). On the talk page there's usually some backhanded vague concern.
I replied on the talk pages and removed the tags. Within minutes they're back.
While my account is decades old it's not very active so I am powerless here.

Vorige week heeft een ex-collega haar laatste stap genomen in het opgeven van haar Amerikaanse staatsburgerschap.
Heeft een serieuze hoeveelheid geld gekost maar na bijna 70 jaar zowel de Amerikaanse als Belgische nationaliteit te hebben gehad heeft ze nu "eindelijk" (haar woorden) alleen de nationaliteit van de samenleving waar ze zich echt deel van voelt.
Ze heeft er tientallen jaren niet over nagedacht maar 2016 was een kantelpunt. Zouden er veel dual-citizens zo over denken?

Festive Swamp Wednesday! 🎉🎄
I'm super happy with this: this xmas day marks a full year of a couple 100 sqm of our woodland being submerged!
Our little anaerobic wetland is an area that -until it was planted with spruce in the 1950s- for many years was some type of peat bog nestled in the sandy expanse of jutland. I hope it's capable of restoring itself without too much help from us.

I don't think either of the newspapers I read have followed that narrative since early 2010 (before it was more muddy).
It's always been more common (even today with the "tech will safe us narrative") with the more secondary / rehashy type of journalism though.

Context bij Van der Plas over kippenmest:
Kippen produceren 1.4 miljoen kilo mest per jaar. 5 tot 10% procent komt wel degelijk op Nederlands land terecht.
Ongeveer 40% wordt geëxporteerd naar akkerbouwers in andere landen.
De vraag ging natuurlijk over koeien en varkens. Maar daar gaat ze niet op in.

Plas gooit er ff een populistisch dingetje in: we gaan ontsnappen uit een gevangenis -dus niet TBS- strafbaar stellen.

It's 17 minutes 'till the train to Germany and as of now it's neither cancelled, massively delayed or replaced by a sloth on a moped.
Very disconcerting. Something must be very wrong.
Update: 7 minutes now. The only logical explanation is that DSB went bankrupt and there's no-one left.

I think there's room for a movie where a sleep deprived QHSE Manager on their way to an early start at work ends up fighting off the zombie apocalypse.
Only hours later we find out they were just really tired and confused groups of punkarse school going teenagers with bands of marauding zombies.
It's a movie oriented at adults. And very relatable to all who have ever taking a Tuesday morning bus.

Network thought:
In the Netherlands an excellent cycle path goes from town A to town B, regardless of administrative borders. It's all a standardized design. And it only works due to a top-down mandate.
In Denmark an excellent cycle path goes from town A to the community border halfway to town B. From there there's either no cycle path or it's a completely different design. There's no top-down mandates.
Somehow reminds me of certain issues with #CrossBorderRail

The absolute killer feature of the Dutch cycling infrastructure policy is that all of it is designed as a unified network.
In the Netherlands you can cycle from a small town in northern Fryslan to a small town in southern Limburg and never end up on dangerous roads , nor end gravel trails, or have constant crossings with car roads.
Having moved from cycling paradise Netherlands to advertised cycling paradise Denmark that network thinking is the one feature making all the difference.

I have a question very suitable to #mastodon: opinions on buying some consumer electronics.
Setting: we do a podcast. The current recording setup is us sitting next to each other talking into the microphone embedded in my Lenovo Thinkpad screen.
It's not *that* bad. However, there's often a difference in our sound level, and clearly the embedded mike has it's limitations.
Thus we have decided to buy an actual mike.
Would the Blue Yeti be good for our purpose?

I assume everyone reading this gets that I'm not dunking on all people living in Rotherham.
I'm sure there's many who are not racist POS. In the days I was there I did not hear them though.
And I did hear open racist shit again at other occasions: at work, at the spoons, another pub and in a corner shop. And it was all ignored.
It felt like "normal people" didn't even bother addressing it. Ignoring the racist is clearly not a solution.
Very different vibe than Wales (even in 'spoons).

Soon multiple local experts were busy explaining issues of immigration, muslims & "the paki when they don't keep their place".
It was the only time in my life I left a meal half finished.
I spend a year in the Welsh valleys where the German thing also came up. But never in Wales did I feel this would escalate, and never was it that aggressively racist.
Next day at the client the "guys" said "nice place" about that spoons & I figured it best to drop it.
Anyway. I didn't like the town.

Anecdote: on a worktrip to the UK I stayed in that #Rothertham hotel that was just attacked by racist thugs. I forgot about the rooms but the breakfast was shit.
Anyway.
Having never been to that area of the UK I went out for dinner. As it was monday I ended up in a Wetherspoons. After establishing that I was not, indeed, a German, but Dutch ("Cruijff was good") all was well and I ended up chatting with the regulars.

Well look at that! Starting literally at the Dutch-German border (on the German side) there is actually proper work done on the track. They're even replacing a little bridge (not on the level of the Friesenbrücke but it's just as needed).
This might become a little #Wunderline yet.

This train is named after Sicco Mansholt. He was one of those people who shaped our european institutions / identity. And he was also a local to this area. Nice touch.

I just arrived in Bad Nieuweschans. The most northern Dutch-German border town with a railroad connection. It's connected to Groningen with a very regular Arriva service.
Tomorrow morning I'll first take the #RailroadBridgeReplacementBicycle to Leer (as since 2015 the Friesenbrücke is temporary out of service... :ablobcatrave:) and then trains via Bremen and Hamburg to go home.

It's amazing what electric bikes do to get people out there. My 70+ yr old dad -who has a bad back & knees, replaced hip, arthritis in fingers & knees, and a grumpy disposition- has done close to 20k in four years. He can't walk more than a km or two.
My mom, with health issues of her own, did 25k in the same time.
And yes, they sometimes go too fast, are a menace for other old people in cars (who are a menace themselves) and use electric assist for 75% of power. They're out there though!
