The SMS answer to Super Mario Bros. is Alex Kidd.
The SMS answer to Zelda is Golden Axe Warrior.

The SMS answer to Castlevania is Kenseiden.

Much has been said about the original Prince of Persia, but my favourite game is Prince of Persia: Sands of Time.
This wasn't Prince of Persia's first foray into 3D. That honour goes to Prince of Persia 3D -- which, to be honest, wasn't very good.
Sands of Time *was* good, though. And it has incredible parkour elements that still holds up to this day. This is fun!
My first exposure to this game was on the GameCube. It was fine but I've always thought the controls were clunky.
As it turns out, though, Sands of Time controls much better with a keyboard and mouse. This is because mouse controls for camera are so much better on PC than on GameCube.
I wish Ubisoft would make games like this again!

Now *Outrun* was a game I actually owned when I had a Commodore 64!
This was magical to me. The fact I had my own home version was a big win. It never came out on the NES, so this gave me bragging rights.
Obviously, this version is not as good as the arcade original. But during the 80s, what home port was? It’s still OutRun!

So far, September is a great month. There's some really exciting indie titles and even a few AA and AAA that caught my attention.
I didn't mention Yars Rising or Black Myth: Wukong because I think I talked about them a lot.
I'm most interested in Yars Rising because it's a Yars game made by WayForward and has the best soundtrack in years.
And I'm interested in Wukong because, well, it's the one AAA title that *isn't* a disaster and might push my GPU to its limits. Plus, generally speaking, I like Chinese mythology.
But that's all the recent games I'm excited about.

I haven't played this yet but Starcom: Unknown Space looks *very* similar to Escape Velocity -- which was an old classic Mac game that I used to play in the 90s.
If this is true, I'm excited. The reviews seem quite good. It has a 91% positive rating.

Ninja 1987 is similar to Shinobi and Ninja Gaiden -- with pixel art graphics and chiptunes.
It's developed by SEEP. And they're simply outstanding. I own many of their games, and they always do a stellar job.

I think Perennial Order is super likely to become a hidden gem because I don't hear people talk about this game very much.
It's a 2D souls-like game with one-hit-death combat.
But as a 2D game, it looks remarkably beautiful -- almost like a painting come to life.

Here's another completely bonkers game.
Smells Like a Mushroom is about sapient vegetables that are fighting evil mushrooms from space. It's a platformer shooter but reminds me of Destroy All Humans! All this with a heavy metal soundtrack.

So I had to find out what is going on here because this game is quite bizarre.
Actually, Space Raft is an actual band from Wisconsin that plays stoner rock.
I don't know why this obscure game got a video game tie-in. Is it a promo for an album?

A good example of what I'd like to buy instead of Space Marine 2 is WHAT THE CAR?
It's a fun little comedy racing game with cool physics.

A big experience of 80s and 90s gaming was the movie tie-in.
Most of the time, they were horrible. Who else remembers playing E.T. on the Atari 2600?
But sometimes, they were great. Robocop on DOS was pretty awesome.
Nowadays, we're seeing the opposite. Movies and TV shows are becoming video game tie-ins. Most of the time, they suck. For example, Borderlands.
However, the Fallout TV series is amazing.

The Crew 2 currently has a -98% discount on Steam. Usually, it sells for C$69.99 but is on sale for C$1.40.
**But it's not worth it!**
Nope, not after The Crew shut down -- making the game completely inaccessible to everyone who bought it.
You see, The Crew can only be played online. There is no offline mode. Which means that once the servers go down, the game is gone for good.
Even C$1.40 is *too much** for The Crew 2!

It's just so *strange* for PC Gamer to say that the PS5 gives you access to the exact same library as PC.
Let's just consider new releases for a moment.

PC Gamer is weirdly going to bat for the PS5 Pro, saying, "For $700, it's actually a good deal."
Look, if someone doesn't already have a PS5, *only* wants to do couch gaming, is fine with no optical disc drive, and is all right with paying for online access... okay.
But on this point about game access, PC Gamer should know better.
It's simply not true that the PS5 gives you access to the exactly the same games as on PC.
The PS5's entire library is a paltry 2,745 games. In comparison, 12,765 games were released on PC alone. That's just year to date in 2024. Again, on Steam alone.

Alkaline Trio ~ “Good Mourning” (2003)
On paper, this is an album I should love. And I don’t hate it. If you’ve never heard Alkaline Trio before, they’re kind of like Green Day and Blink 182—but darker and with a little emo going on. Musically, I like this.
But the mastering could have been better. I keep wondering—is there any reason to waste all that dynamic range. It’s not the most compressed album I’ve ever heard but it’s still pretty damn compressed.
I hear the vinyl version is better. It’s probably better to get that instead of this CD.

This is year is a disaster for Sony.

Now the really awful PS5 Pro -- which is far more expensive than the PS5 yet has neither a disc drive nor a stand.

You can't upgrade it. You have to pay for online access. The game library is small.
Oh yeah, and the specs are anemic.

I think the best name and logo is the New York Sirens. If you're familiar with Greek mythology, then you probably know it's a badass name for a women's hockey team.

Tired of folks saying, "People don't want *that* tech anymore..."
I don't care what the ""market"" wants. I have my *own* wants.
I want a small smartphone.
I want an MP3 player with a clickwheel.
I want PC game, on an optical disc, packed inside a big box with an instruction manual -- and maybe some stickers.
I'm not the ""market"" but that's what I want.

I don't talk much about politics on the Fediverse.
It's not because I don't have political opinions. I very much do. On occasion, I even share those opinions.
But for the Fediverse to grow, people have to start talking about a wider array of interests.
There needs to be communities for food, books, video games, music, art, hiking, etc.
You know, stuff that makes life worth living. Because, if not, what's the point?

iTunes I can understand. But Spotify is nothing like the mixtape experience.
At best, Spotify is like the radio but with a robot DJ who just wants to put you in a silo.

Looks like I got one hell of a music haul.
Everyone seems to agree that, for $20, I struck gold. Nowadays, you can't even get one new vinyl record for that price. So to get 30 CDs and 1 DVD -- and have so many good albums too -- is pretty epic.
Often when I show off CD hauls like this, I get questions such as "Why bother when streaming exists?"
It's because I can keep these albums forever and am not beholden to Spotify for access.
The other reason is that I can rip them, store them on my MP3 player, or even stream them remotely from my music server.
Eventually, there will be a CD revival. In the meantime, I'm buying them while nobody wants them. 😉
