Well, what that video tells me is that American support for Israel is a decades long effort, that has as it's goal having an armed proxy where the oil and trade routes are. And in that sense, it's the same reason why British imperialism originally supported the creation of Israel.
I don't see the US gov. as dilettante, I see it as heavily compromised with a colonial effort on the Middle East. "Joined by the hip" as Seymour Hersh puts it.
