It is weird how so many of these people go down the rabbit hole and end up in RWNJ territory. It's almost like the Silicon Valley techbro archetype but for influencers. "I'm not right wing, I'm for drug legalization", "I'm not prejudiced against LGBT I just don't want to see two guys holding hands in public around kids," and other such denials are common too. @npub1t08…wqkp From what I've been reading it is a lot more complicated than that. There were established rules for open water swims going back to early-20th century English Channels swims which described what "unassisted" meant. It was a big part of the "no touching" thing they made a big deal out of in the movie. But there are photos of her crew touching her during her swim. That also included the gear she was wearing as well to avoid the jellyfish stings. The History vs. Hollywood had a brief write up and a link to a sit heavily critical of Nyad for some of her prior behaviors including lying about her records/professional history repeatedly, and some slanderous statements against Walter Poenisch who completed the swim in 1978. He had his own problems with not registering his protocol, having observers, etc. as well. She knew what scrutiny these attempts have. It is somewhere between odd and a shame she didn't do the steps necessary to make sure it would pass documentation requirements. This isn't my sport so whether by definition of the people who care about it it is unassisted it might as well be as far as I'm concerned. Some of them also tried to give us the "how to make a market monopoly of the web3/crypto space" before that bubble burst. So I can't speak for others but for me it was, "I'll believe it when I see it." They started off on the wrong foot in many ways as well, making the protocol in secret not with community that they supposedly cared about, etc. etc.

@npub1grz…35cv @npub1lhk…7va4 The whole process has been formation mostly in isolation not as community. I’m give the implementers the benefit of the doubt but they aren’t the decision makers. The investors and the executives they put in place are. I admit they have gone further with making steps towards federation than I thought they would but when the investors start clamoring for returns and they don’t make them I imagine the first thing they are going for is the data harvesting of the data in the relay and other potentially non-open things. “But everyone else could tell them to go pound sand and they make themselves an island.” Maybe, assuming they aren’t the overwhelming majority of the network at that point. Too many maybes and central control of important nodes for me to do more than bridge over to it from my own self hostable Friendica system which also wonderfully federates to anything over ActivityPub and Diaspora as well. I know my take is cynical but, again, the usual suspects funding and driving executive team composition have zero benefits of the doubt left because of their past execution. When these worms turn the true believer implementers are stuck in a world of suck and I feel bad for them. I prepare for the worst but hope for the best.

So I go over there when my brain wants that masochistic dopamine hit now that Nitter is gone. I’ll take it over Twitter or Facebook totally walled gardens. Because the backers are the same people who gave us our current social media and big tech calamity, tried to do it again with their web3/crypto play, and don’t seem like they actually care about more than marketing message about decentralization (see web3/crypto) I’m beyond skeptical. I do hope I’m proven wrong and I’d like some improvements in ActivityPub. But I’m not as optimistic about it or the organization as you and @npub1grz…35cv are.

It seems clear to me that the tech press, even those friendly to decentralization, are only interested in Threads, Bluesky, and whatever new idea some other VC fund or billionaire come up with. Mastodon and AP are mentioned in passing if at all. That's unfortunate. It's not just a chasing the money thing because it's the likes of people who have proven not to succumb to that, I'm not naming names. We on the D* and AP side of the fediverse, or social web as I have heard people call it recently, can still go about our business improving things incrementally and doing what we've always done. If another wave comes and we catch it fine. The tech press and pundits, even fediverse friendly ones, have sadly moved on. Ironically most of the articles I see on why they like Bluesky more than Mastodon, the rest of the fediverse doesn't get recognized at all ever and never has by these same people again except maybe in passing, are reasons why I haven't liked my Bluesky experience (which I've thankfully integrated into the Friendica part of the fediverse I reside in thanks to its bridge). Watching some videos where they discuss hunger, hyper-palatability from excess sugar/artificial sweeteners, and "if you are thinking about food all the time then you are too lean". I'm weird I guess because while I absolutely love and crave sweets, treats, junk food etc. I also crave lots of veggies, food that people would be considered bland, etc. I also love super spicy food too. Basically, I love food! alright? All foods. Whether I'm at 30% body fat eating massive calorie surpluses for months on end, eating in a calorie deficit to lose body fat, or 18% body fat eating sustained rates, I'm always thinking about food of all kinds. Making new recipes, trying new cuisines, learning about the variety of foods from around the world and eras. Sometimes I think it'd be neat to have a second career as a chef, baker, or food historian. It is why the "not serious" COVID symptom of losing my sense of smell and/or taste is so terrifying to me. Anyway, I'm just thinking out loud and wondering what the statistical distribution of people are on this matter (not assuming it has ever been studied before). #food #fitness #diet

I'm really trying to prime the pump on using PeerTube over YouTube. Even more than other parts of the fediverse it seems search/content discovery is ineffective enough that I'm going to call it broken :(. To brute force through this I even went to Sepia, got a list of all the servers, spent a couple hours going through accounts to find ones I even had a nominal interest in. My instance knew none of them. Fine, I'll just paste their channel URL into the search bar to force a fetch. Nope. Thankfully doing that with a video worked. Then I could subscribe to them, and away we go. I hope/hoped. There was one video that I forgot to add to a "watch later" list. Surely now that I subscribe to that account I could type their name in the search bar and it'd find it. Nope. What about keywords from the video? Nope. I'm at a loss for what it takes to finally have that start showing up on my local instance. Maybe I need to self-host to start figuring some of this out perhaps fix. Once I find stuff the streaming is great though. And I'm very glad to see there are now built-in mechanisms to help creators monetize through donations. #PeerTube #fediverse.

A bit ago someone here pointed to stupid and/or unsafe ads proliferating on YouTube. I talked about one I had seen with a heater defying the laws of physics. Here it is. Apparently it is the latest incarnation of a rolling scam (see link). This one has Steve the former NASA engineer (shown below) saving his family that were trapped in their house for days in a blizzard after the heat went out by inventing a new ceramic tile based heating system that can heat any room 34 F to 85 F in 90 seconds and keep it there against even a lay person's understanding of thermodynamics. See, he took his expertise building these systems for NASA, did we mention he worked for NASA yet?, to pull a Professor from Gilligan's Island feat to come up with this by reverse engineering the home HVAC unit and inventing the ceramic heating system...all while trapped in the house during a blizzard. But the evil HVAC industry wanted to sell it to consumers for a fortune but he decided to partner with friends to bring it to you directly. LOL.
Honestly the dialog isn't even self consistent. But apparently this and other renditions work enough that people keep buying these damn things. Since it is so easy to find its shocking that even out of their own self interest Google stops these ads from showing up. Someone on the fediverse said the John Oliver segment on Musk was meh. I don't watch his show or even most segments but decided to give it a whirl. At some point early in Oliver says something to the effect of, "There are people who absolutely love Musk and there are people who absolutely hate him. This is probably going to piss off both of them." Being someone who at this point complete visceral contempt for the man, more than anyone I know, but thinking I arrived at it honestly (who doesn't think they arrive at their opinions honestly), I watched on. At this point I know every nook and cranny of the reality of Musk, the perceptions of Musk, and everything in between so nothing presented was novel. Honestly, I thought the segment did a solid job of distilling the whole debacle that is Elon Musk into a an entertaining yet informative 15 minute piece that hits all the broadstrokes. I like the idea of breaking out of media bubbles and seeing how bias is reporting things differently. The site ground.news is a mechanism for doing that. They aggregate bias and ownership rankings from third party organizations and then show who is covering what and how. It is fascinating. But I think their rating system has some glaring errors. It's impossible to get a list of all publications but even their standard one shows the problem. AP being center is solid, but in the updated ratings it is skewed as left of center. Politico is definitely not left of center nor is The Hill center. Those are all right of center. NBC and CNN is at best left of center but especially with the new management of CNN that is actually now right of center too. Even in the categories of organizations I can't stand I don't think their ratings hold up. I hate Fox News but there is no way their web/print content are as skewed right as Daily Wire and Breitbart. They would more appropriately be in the same column as WSJ and New York Post. The thing I learned today though is that it is possible to create individual suggestions and tweaks. So maybe it would be worth subscribing after all...I can't tell. Anyone have practical long term usage experience to tell me what their thoughts are? #MSM #MediaBias #uspoli

I just don't have the patience for most discussion rooms any longer, even on a site like Matrix. It seems that even non-political ones invariably get introduced to some topic that then devolves into the various pearl clutchings about "woke" or having to argue that trans people actually exist and it's not some big plot by elitist eggheads for various nefarious purposes etc. I loved doing that sort of constructive(ish) bantering in my 20s and 30s. I’m very stoked at how well my sourdough experiment went. I have a batch of starter I haven’t fed since 10 August 2021, over two years ago. I took a little out, fed it, let it sit for 2 days, fed it one more time, and ten hours later used it to make the overnight leaven for this morning’s bread. Crumb is a little tighter than normal but still a solid loaf. It’s as good or better than last year’s at ~1 year mark. Love a good few beers after a nice hard run in a legit race but definitely don’t recommend in regular training. And I finally got to run the 10k over the Chesapeake Bay Bridge. I finished with just under 10 minute mile pace which was a bonus too. I must be a block head but for the life of me I can't figure this out. I have a Pixel 4 phone I use for development testing. It's still on Google Fi. I bought it directly from Google. It's been off for several months. I'm trying to get the latest OS update and it says that the latest version of Android is 13 not 14. That's fine. *But* it says the version I have installed, from over a year ago, is the latest version of Android 13. Am I missing something? Forcing it to go out for the update refresh is returning that I have the latest version. Did Google Drop support for a 4 year old phone getting security updates? #Android #Google

I'm pretty appalled at how much blatant and latent anti-Semitism is propagated around people that I thought should know better. I 100% support expressing concern and outrage over Israeli policies but many of these expressions are well beyond that. Hamas is a terrorist organization plain and simple. Them having government roles is akin to al Qaeda in Iraq in that it doesn't change that their primary purpose and nature is terrorism. Minimizing Hamas is bad, supporting them is worse. Minimizing Hamas's role in the plight of Palestinians over the years, not just through their terrorist attacks but how they have run areas they control, is also not good. Using supposedly pro-Palestinian slogans like "from the river to the sea" which is explicitly for the eradication of the state of Israel is the same sort of anti-Semitic dog whistle as the neo-Nazis using 88, "Fourteen Words", or etc. isn't showing support for Palestinian people it is projecting anti-Semitism and supporting wiping Israel off the map and kicking Jewish people out of the area. I won't even get into the at best non-reactions that is happening to the surge in explicit anti-Semitism and attacks on Jews throughout the US and Europe.
I wish more people cared about the Palestinian people for the past several decades to help move a solution forward. No one, the West, not the Arab or Muslim powers in the region, not the governments they "elected" (the terrorist organization Hamas), or anyone else ever really have. When the Hamas terrorist scourge has been eradicated hopefully we can all focus on addressing the Palestinian's real problems productively rather than going back to ignoring them until another terrorist attack, beyond the weekly missile strikes that Hamas has been conducting for years, stokes the bees nest again.
In the immediate term the reckoning on anti-Semitism of the far left being equally horrific as on the far right needs to be addressed ASAP. It is a cancer from either part of the political spectrum.

It wasn't so bad that I wouldn't try it again. Maybe I'll try your recipe for making it myself. I love beans and legumes enough to get my fill on their own.

Since I shared my net calories/weight graph over the past 8 weeks, I figured might as well illustrate what the average daily diet looked like over that last two week phase. It was a wedding leading into a long vacation so I planned for the heavy eating and drinking. Having tracked my food intake daily for over a decade I have it down to a science but the error bars get larger the more one eats out. That said the error in my estimated weight change over that interval was less than 0.25 pounds :). The yellow bar part of the pie chart is alcohol, on average 750 calories a day worth. That's essentially averaging 7-8 drinks a day, spaced out over a whole day so never getting plastered but still. Cholesterol and salt, not shown, were 3x recommended daily allowance. I am happy to be eating dialed into my target healthy diet again :0. #health #longevity #QuantifiedSelf
