I’m give the implementers the benefit of the doubt but they aren’t the decision makers. The investors and the executives they put in place are. I admit they have gone further with making steps towards federation than I thought they would but when the investors start clamoring for returns and they don’t make them I imagine the first thing they are going for is the data harvesting of the data in the relay and other potentially non-open things. “But everyone else could tell them to go pound sand and they make themselves an island.” Maybe, assuming they aren’t the overwhelming majority of the network at that point. Too many maybes and central control of important nodes for me to do more than bridge over to it from my own self hostable Friendica system which also wonderfully federates to anything over ActivityPub and Diaspora as well. I know my take is cynical but, again, the usual suspects funding and driving executive team composition have zero benefits of the doubt left because of their past execution. When these worms turn the true believer implementers are stuck in a world of suck and I feel bad for them. I prepare for the worst but hope for the best.
