I think Amethyst would benefit more from having tighter controls over which relays to post to, e.g. being able to post a single post to only a subset of your relays.

In the era of reifying "exposure" and lots of friction in donations, they're worried that machine learning-based image generators would overwhelm the feeds and suppress their reach. This is a problem created by lack of transparency in the social silos and the friction of fiat money.
In the era of social network silos being dead and the #zap mechanism on Nostr flourishing, they really have nothing to worry about. As long as they still got some rich patrons who will zap them and commission arts from them.
I would personally love to commission an artwork from a human artist — but due to me being cut off from the greater fiat financial system, I lack the pathways to do so — even though I have the money.

I've recently been thinking about claims on how #Bitcoin, according to Bitcoiners themselves, has the potential to stop wars by making it harder to finance wars with a finite currency supply that cannot be devalued by government-controlled inflation.
There's only one problem with this. If a country that hasn't adopted the #BitcoinStandard starts a war with another country, then the attacking country can inflate its own fiat currency supply ad infinitum (with obvious consequences for that country's citizens, who can be considered main holders of that country's currency, as most likely that currency is mandated to be the only legal tender — rapid inflation will most likely lead to massive poverty since nobody's actually gonna raise wages to keep up with inflation) and potentially have an economic edge over a country with a stable currency, that might have trouble assembling enough capital and human forces to fight off the attack.
This makes a country adopting a Bitcoin standard essentially fully subservient to the will of its own citizens, since in case of hostile policy people can just stop paying taxes (bitcoin doesn't go away if a single country collapses, assuming miners are spread out more-or-less uniformly — and it's rather hard to forcefully take possession of) or stop buying government bonds denominated in BTC, cutting off lending for the country. Which, in case of an attack by another country, could lead to the country's defenses being compromised — since you can't issue more currency, eventually you will run out of money to pay wages to cops and soldiers that could roughhouse people into giving up their money.
This subservience of a government to their own people may be a good or a bad thing, depending on your political views and whether you are the government or one of the aforementioned people.

What a coincidence. I actually also came here from Ether. Honestly I like the community here better — less rugpulls and hypocrisy*, more fun and building actually useful stuff. I was a little bit skeptical of the PoW power consumption, like many were, but it turns out people are already solving these problems by running miners off of waste like vented gasses or purely green energy like hydroelectric power.
* Fun fact: Did you know that Infura, one of the major RPC providers in the EVM ecosystem, only accepts fiat as payment for their services? Tells you a lot about their beliefs, in my opinion. There's much less of that bullshit in Bitcoin space — you can spot a true believer by seeing if they accept Bitcoin for their services. Bonus points if the price is in sats ✨

Zaps are actually standard Lightning invoices under the hood. If a wallet can zap, it can do pretty much anything else too, like pay a non-zap invoice. The only thing you can't do with Alby is get into the nitty-gritty details of Lightning like opening channels, because Alby manages all of that for their users.
Personally I am not really familiar with Alby specifically, but I currently use a similar custodial solution for receiving zaps as an interim measure, and am currently working on setting up my own Lightning node the hard way to learn the ropes and have full self-custody without relying on external services.
I think Alby can also work with an external lightning node, though I don't quite remember how does one connect them together.

As far as I remember, Alby is a custodial wallet. There aren't any keys for it, which means you don't have to manage keys, but also have to trust Alby to not disappear one day.
I heard @npub1xnf…lpr5 are working on having a Lightning wallet for receiving zaps in a self-custodial way — you might wanna try their 0.8 beta version (it allows you to get a node running on your phone and receive zaps without giving away custody, even when offline, via some Lightning Network magic ✨ it also comes with a cool lightning address)

Half of it seems to be FUD. If you aren't a routing node, your funds are perfectly safe. To defraud a routing node, both sender and recipient of a payment need to collude, and also the attack doesn't have a 100% success rate, especially with the mempool-watching mitigations that node developers applied.

Fulcrum's fast sync is incredibly fragile. I had to restart it at least 10 times already, and the last time it somehow ate the entire machine's memory and swap (both 16 GB) despite the cache being only 5G in size.
Disabled it, let's see how it fares without.

No matter how much I am thinking about it, I can't understand #Bitcoin #derivatives like futures and options.
Especially the fact that I couldn't find any physical delivery contracts — for some unknown reason they're always cash-settled, which doesn't make sense to me since it's basically just gambling with the candlestick chart instead of a roulette table, and you don't even touch the underlying asset????
How are you supposed to even use these for anything serious, e.g. hedging against Bitcoin falling short-term as a Bitcoin-native business who nevertheless still depends on fiat for some transactions? If the put option (that is supposed to give you the right to sell your sats at a fixed price denominated in fiat) you just bought is cash-settled, where does the Bitcoin even come in then?
(Of course, a case could be made that you should promote the circular economy and strive to always pay in sats — but everything takes time, and sometimes dealing with fiat money is unavoidable, I guess).

One of my theories:
1. Halving primarily affects miners, who spend fiat for their electricity and receive BTC. (The first ever exchange of BTC for fiat was derived from the price of electricity used to mine it — or so I heard!) They start receiving less BTC and therefore are forced to sell it for more to compensate for their loss.
2. Perhaps psychological forces such as "hype" also affect the price. Halving means less new bitcoins, therefore bitcoins become more scarce. More scarcity => higher price per unit. Even if it's purely psychological — humans have shown to be quite irrational sometimes. Humanity is quite vulnerable to irrationality.
3. There are also other factors unrelated to halvings that may amplify the effect — such as that, purely by coincidence, there are talks about Bitcoin spot ETFs, which may probably positively affect the price (since demand for Bitcoin raises, and market participants are going to extract their surplus value from the increased demand)

I wanted to run a node, but it requires like twice or thrice the space of the Bitcoin chain. And there is no pruning anymore, because they broke it when adding the beacon chain — therefore Ethereum has become centralized and inaccessible to those who Infura considers undesirables.
Btw Infura doesn't take ETH for their services. Only credit cards. Shows who they really serve, IMO.

Governments will have to rely on bonds a lot if they want to survive hyperbitcoinization. Bonds and taxes are going to be the two main ways to fund both necessary public goods and also frivolous government spending such as wars.
But taxes are going to get quite harder to levy if the government doesn't know how much money everyone has. So the only remaining viable option is bonds. Except now the government has the potential to trap itself in its own debt the way people get trapped in student loans and other debts in US right now. That would be rather amusing to watch, especially if it happens to US.
Then, some more savage failed states might turn to attempting to enslave people by force. My prediction is that it'll seem to work until it stops working — either there will be no more slaves because everyone runs away or goes into hiding, or because people will die so much the country will empty itself. (I wonder if any countries today are in danger of a similar scenario unfolding ✨ y'know what I mean)

I still find the concept of #money absurd. In my opinion, money in its current form is creating more problems than it solves. But it also patches over the problem of humans inherently mistrusting each other due to assuming malicious intent (not unreasonable — evil is in humanity's nature, as I learned in my existence in this world).
A perfectly efficient world would not have scarcity that is currently created by hoarders of resources and money. But humans will probably not achieve that any time soon. Any system that tried collapsed because of evil intent — either from inside, due to bad or outright malicious planning, or outside, due to jealousy and greed.
That's not to say we shouldn't attempt to build such a world. But it's going to be a long journey. Will I live long enough to see such a possibility unfold?

About the only drawback of #Bitcoin is exorbitant power draw. But it looks like some clever Bitcoiners managed to either power their plants with renewable energy (didn't some fossil fuel supporters complain that renewable energy can push prices into the negatives? sore losers) or excess waste from fossil fuel production. I guess it's an acceptable solution.
I'm also interested in what will happen when emission of Bitcoin will finally stop at the sacral 21 million number — how many people who only did mining for profit are going to shut off their miners? Will we see some sort of difficulty adjustment to match the lowered hashrate? Of course, mining probably won't disappear — with cheap energy sources it may still be possible to break even just by transaction fees, but I wonder if fees are going to rise because of that.

No matter the system and theory of the origin of money (be it the classical theory that modern "economists" promote, or several alternative ones of your choice), #Bitcoin as a system of money and unit of account just makes sense.
Finite money for finite resources (nothing is infinite, endless growth is impossible, impractical and also simply unnecessary). No way to dilute the supply by inflation whenever your government's coffers are emptying. Options for privacy (reveal addresses for no privacy and transparent cashflow — though for transactions with counterparties some amount of trust is required for introspection; or hide your addresses and use coinjoins to obfuscate your money flow).
If money is needed for a functioning society (and it seems like our current society is addicted to the concept of money), it's a nice option. And the only one which works.
Besides, governments are scared of it. Mine is, too. And if your government is doing something against your interests, anything it is scared of might help you.

Currently syncing my own Bitcoin node 🎉 Decided to, in addition to using Tor proxying, also isolate it in a container that cannot access the internet outside of a single port on the host — the aforementioned Tor proxy. Mostly for fun. It makes for an interesting setup, even though it doesn't actively increase my anonymity.
The host machine, of course, has full access to the container, especially the RPC port. This might be useful to configure Sparrow to connect to the node — though, of course, it doesn't show me much since the node is (for now) stuck somewhen around 2015.
Next step would be a lightning node and maybe Fulcrum so I can use more common wallet apps than Sparrow, e.g. Electrum on my phone. I also think that maybe getting a cold wallet would be nice. Perhaps a @npub17ty…3mgl? 😝

I personally believe money in general to be a crutch that covers up for humanity's utter inability to build systems based on mutual collaboration (somebody will always take advantage of the trust given to them). But it's surprising that during most of its existence, money was essentially a form of trust (the word "credit" in "system of credit", the way people usually describe current money, literally means trust. How amusing). And that trust, too, was abused — see counterfeiting, hyperinflation caused by central banks printing money to cover up for their government's debt etc.
At least nobody can take my cryptocurrency away from me or suddenly inflate its supply.
Also isn't the 21 million number a happy accident involving the halving mechanism, that was later adopted as one of the main selling points of Bitcoin? 😝 not gonna lie tho, not a bad thing to have it even by accident

I find it kinda amusing that despite being a cryptocurrency skeptic, I seemed to produce at least two posts in here that prompted somebody to try to zap me, only to find out that I haven't gotten around to set up a wallet yet.
I honestly believe custodial wallets are a dead end for #Bitcoin, and at this point you're better off just using fiat. Now if you really want to get your toes in, drop your custodial wallet and jump into the rabbit hole. It doesn't seem too hard, and honestly will most likely weed off grifters from here.

Haven't gotten around to build my own lightning node (but I do seem to have all the working parts needed) and I don't believe in custodial wallets. Self-custody or death 🔥 There's no point in using cryptocurrency otherwise

I would sit in disbelief for at least a few months, because my impression of Musk is a shitcoin grifter who can't put his stuff where his words are (looking in particular at the Twitter fiasco, and also at how Teslas are constantly the target of a thousand newspaper articles for being notorious to crash with the auto-pilot on).
Even though I don't consider Bitcoin the greatest thing ever invented, I believe it's out-of-reach for Elon to be its creator. It's too complicated, and what's worse: Bitcoin actually seems to work, unlike his feeble attempts at tech. (Even then, I doubt Elon has personally accomplished anything in any of his companies)

Funny thing, I actually keep my nostr client on the global feed. I don't hold back on the block button to silence people whose views don't match my own (and who I don't care about debating with), but otherwise it's fairly readable. Not even much worse than a feed from the now-fallen birdsite.

I stopped updating most apps that don't have a proper changelog. I'm calling that my "no changelog, no update" policy. An app is only excluded if it publishes a changelog in any way (such as Discord's "What's new" section, though I don't use Discord that often; or FOSS apps for which I know the git repo.)
I don't even read them most of the time, but I find the ability to do so rather pleasant.

It sure did push me to research Lightning Network. To me it seems like an incredibly complicated nerd trap, but I did try a few test payments between my own wallets and even a zap, and it fucking works, I guess.

Self-hosting or death 🔥 don't believe anything that isn't decentralized and/or isn't hosted directly by you.
If something is decentralized, host at least one node to contribute to decentralization and hedge against failures.
As for blocking VPNs, anything that punishes users based on IP addresses should perish in a datacenter fire. There are many legitimate reasons to use a VPN, e.g. avoiding government censorship (like in my country) or avoiding silly geoblocking.

Does this mean that as a potential metric for adoption, we should most likely exclude sats that are lying unused for more than some time from the market cap, and only count sats that actively change hands?
In addition, this would also exclude abandoned wallets whose owners lost the keys, which to me sounds like a good thing. These bitcoins are essentially burned and are doing nothing productive.
