That time of year in NW Ohio. My small rural school that graduates 25-35 kids each year had drive your tractor to school today. Now if these youngins can find the way to farm how their great grandpa's did it, they can start a transition back to sustainability.

A rabbit hole that you never thought existed. The Canada syrup cartel. I am not sure if it's true, but was told by 2 different Canadians, that they can't make syrup like me. They can for home use and giveaways, but if you want to sell, it's regulated. Any Canadians, whom Ohio shares a border with. Please comment and help set the record straight.

5 a m in Ohio on a Saturday. Pulling taps and gathering buckets to be picked up later. Track meet today so I had to do early work. luckily as a teacher, 28 yrs ago, I got my bus license to help my small rural school, and my kids school hired me to drive the track meets, so I get to watch my 9th and 10th grader boys run and get paid for it. These extra jobs I pick up get turned to sats.

Today is my last day of maple sap collection for the season. weather broke and trees look ready to bud.. I turn buckets upside-down so small amounts of sap don't drop in and then sour/mold before I collect and clean them. I collected almost 7000 gallons of sap in buckets and bags this year. a bucket will fill in about 8 hours when sap is running.

GM nostr. Proof of work for my sats for syrup. 5 a.m. in Ohio here and I just got fire going.. Had a great sap run and have to boil as much as possible today on my wood fired homemade evaporator. Cutting wood also today while I boil because I'm running low. Believe it or not the maple syrup industry is also commercialized. Tubing in woods, blending syrups, natural gas or fuel oil burners, pressure filters with diatomaceous earth, and if you ever see "spicy syrup" or "bourbon aged syrup" it's cause they take their worst syrup and add a strong flavor to it and market it.
I'm old school and still boil outside over wood. Each 5-10 gallon batch has its own unique characteristics. Message me if interested, prices in my profile and I prefer BTC.

Many people in small communities around the US that do farmers markets are bitcoiners and don't know it. I only sold maple syrup for cash for obvious reasons, as many farmers markets do. I had no ambition to compete with the 2 families of large maple producers in my area that helped me get started with advice, and lending me old equipment. I wanted to sell outside our area online. But no cash option. As I researched bitcoin became the answer, I can share my farmers market good around the US. And I believe in bitcoin more than cash now. I am just a hobbyist but made 100 gallons of syrup from 5000 gallons of sap. I can't wait to see the nostr farmers market in a few years.

And so true. The batch boiling without blending like commercial sugarmakers in Vermont and Canada gives me distinct flavors through the season. I am at 3 district flavors this year. Add to that the terrior of Ohio and my maple grove. Ohio once had vast maple forest until settling and farming.

Wow. This made me go inside and have a spoonful of syrup. My syrup comes in batches and I don't blend like the big boys. I believe this came from batch 2 and was an Amber. 1st batch was light and vanilla, 4th is dark and heavy maple. I get mostly amber. You speak so well of it you must have a background in English or marketing.

Love it. Here is my homemade evaporator in NW Ohio. It's a great hobby. I lost my helpers to basketball and indoor track. I'm tired this year. I do buckets and bags (homemade pvc holder on bag) and I like the Fiskars @npub1swe…ns6h at 52 yrs old this is my first year with a log splitter(got a free one) I was struggling to keep up with maple and heating house. I always did cash, i wanted to expand online but with all the centralized payments I shyed away.. Then I found bitcoin and it became my online ramp to sell, and now I stack it. Yep early season light. As season goes on and gets a little warmer, bacteria convert sucrose to glucose and glucose browns more when heated(malliard rxn) I get majority amber/dark at my hobby operation. 1 son and mother in law love the light stuff. Up in Vermont they often sell it for more.

So I was talking a bit with @RevHodl and was talking how I keep up with tapping 600 trees, especially when my teenage sons are in sports now. Very labor intensive. I learned from an old timer that made syrup into his late 80's, you don't always have to boil hard. I boil hard when I am home and watching. I smolder and steam when I am sleeping or at work. Here is 4:45 this morning when I got up. The sap level went down a couple inches in pan, and tank level went down 1/3. All told about 50 gallons water boiled off while I slept. I can shut evaporator down pretty tight and am showing the coals I'm left with in morning. I can do this through the day also.

This always seems like the official start of Maple season. 1st fire and the sap starts to boil. If I'm lucky I'll get 6 weeks of sap runs, if not maybe 4. Should have some fresh syrup for the weekend. (Give me a couple weeks to filter and bottle)

I'm all sugar and black maple here. I think you can, it just doesn't have as much sugar in sap, you would just boil longer. I made some syrup from walnut trees for fun and it was 80 gal sap for 1 gal syrup and it was great. Sugar maple is about 45 gal sap per gallon. So big leaf maybe closer to the walnut amount. I tapped 50 walnut trees to get that because they don't give as much sap either.

Long couple weeks. Son was sick with stomach flu that then went to mono. Lots of laying around and getting him to eat more. Finished big piece of home butchered sausage as he then attacked the waffle ice cream sandwich with homemade maple syrup. He got his calories this morning.

Oh man, what you can do with maple. Check some of my timeline from March thru June and you will see making syrup, ideas for syrup, and yes, this year I got zapped for some syrup orders.

Yep, gotta be 3 ft higher than roof when I put it on. It will provide structure for roof on that end.

Homebuilt patio fireplace is now structurally and functionally done. Over the next year: pour patio, hand hew a mantle, stonework all walls and chimney, put a roof on it. I'm ready for fall fires.
