My story is similar. In the 10 years since retiring from the music production job I loved and hated, I've kept to one glass of beer, & maybe a tongue-moistening of good liquor like Laphroaig or Slivovitz, 3 times a week at most. The headache that follows the very few times I've indulged in more warn me away from repeating that.
My failing memory is of course due to years of overindulgence, but also partially to panic over turning geezer, proven by memory returning once I relax.

Back when I allegedly earned enough to try drinking my way (figuratively) around the world & into the Earth, Orval Trappist ale happened my favorite too...though I'm sure the bottled stuff pales compared to the what the Trappists tap. Blanche de Chambly was a close 2nd (& 3rd, being sold in bigger bottles).On the same shelf was one whose label displayed a cartoonish laughing monk. Though eventually a lot of us admitted that was great music too, at the time it represented The Establishment. But today a staggering number of people in their 20s prefer music from 20–50 years ago over today's crap with its auto-tuned vocals accompanied by MIDI-samplers. I have better days when I calmly follow the chain of necessities, from getting out of bed onward, unconcerned with feelings, ignoring useless regrets & self criticism which, like every other art, quickly gets easier with regular practice. Small pleasures are not weaker merely because they're small. Looking OUT (not up), participating in Cosmos for a while before going back IN to Earth, is a magical gift, a fact no bad news can alter. Perspective is key. What can I improve?
