Thanks for the link to this. Reading more there, I stumbled upon this curiosity:
"The first French collection, entitled Le Livre des patiences, par Mme de F*** (identified by Ross-Healey as the Marquise de Fortia)..."
Why did the author use only three stars to spell a six letter name? I believe "fortia" can be translated as force, so the word we're all thinking of is not unrelated.
