GM NOSTR Tip for #orangepilling: Don't say the word #bitcoin or #crypto, many people have big negative reactions to those words. Say #lightning, people have no idea what lightning is. Tell people how lightning solves their problem, play to their preconceptions, lightning is fast, it's amazing, it's easy. Pretty soon they're like wow this idea is cool. Now that they think it's cool, you can mention that all this lightning stuff happens on Bitcoin, but because it's confronting an idea they already think (lightning sounds cool!), they get way less defensive and combative, and they are inclined to agree with it because otherwise they'd have to admit they were wrong about that lightning thing. You are using their own cognitive bias against them. I have been using this to great effect telling people about #nostr #grownostr

Nostr is pretty far along and already well committed to the whole "every user is not a relay" paradigm. Which is fine, it's probably "decentralized enough". One of the key pressure points coming up is going to be the cost of hosting media for relays and the tendency for relays to centralize a bit as the average relay hosting cost increases due to increased users and particularly increased media. If we integrate a P2P way to store and to distribute media now, we can avoid much of that.
For example, we have a NIP for associating a pubkey with a LNURL (lightning address). We can also have a NIP for defining a link to an "external media" which is downloaded via Freenet, Hyphanet, IPFS, etc. Let the client do the work of downloading and re-sharing media content while the relays are responsible for text and links to media. At least for Freenet, you talk to it via your web browser via a localhost port. So a nostr client can easily make links to, upload, and download through it without ever needing to leave the browser. The only thing that needs to be true for that to work is for the user to run the freenet client in the background. Unfortunately, they don't have a client for Android or iPhone, but proxy services (like currently used for media) can help with that. IPFS may be another route, I am less familiar with it.
If you're doing nostr dev, this could be something that I think would be on the easier side to implement. I'd gladly contribute to a bounties for it, this is something I'm passionate about.

If we assume x number of events per day on the network, the more relays, the fewer events each relay needs to store. Text events are tiny, you can fit all of wikipedia's text on a DVD. If we integrate with other P2P networks like #IPFS, #Freenet, #Hyphanet, etc for storage of media, then space isn't much of a concern. Tor isn't needed, NAT punching protocols exist and are mature, plus IPv6.
Think of it this way: Can your phone store all the text from all your social media posts? What about all of your 10 closest friends? Yes? Then this can scale.
But you don't need to take my word for it, look at existing P2P technologies which have been doing this kind of routing for years. There's no need to centralize around relays.

People complain that "not everybody will run a relay", well, why is that? Because the architecture of the network and the UX of the software doesn't automatically do it for them. Why is running a relay not automatic when running a client? It could be. Every client could be a relay.

Use Firefox. It's the only open-source browser run by a non-profit, not a for-profit and is the only significant alternative to the Google Chrome monopoly. If you want a web built on open standards, if you want more privacy, if you want to be able to use an adblocker, Firefox is the clear choice.

If you want an easy and awesome exchange/app to DCA through, use #Strike. If you want the lowest fees possible and maximum privacy, use #bisq or in-person purchasing options. People interested in #nostr and freedomtech really ought to take a look at #freenet and #hyphanet. These platforms are even more censorship resistant than nostr is. While nostr gives you agency over which custodians to trust (and the ability to trust multiple custodians (relays)), relays are still concentrated forms of power that can be coerced and shut down. That requires coercing 10% of the network instead of social media where is like three companies, but freenet requires coercing >51% of the network to censor something. Does that number sound familiar to anybody?

Some questions about #zeus wallet. Can zeus:
1. Can Zeus generate a payment address which can be used by multiple parties to send coins to me so I don't have to make a new invoice every time?
2. It looks like in newer versions I can use a LSP and not run my own node, is this correct? If so, this is basically the same thing Phoenix does right?
3. Does my zeus wallet have to be "online" to receive payments? If so, is the app being open in the background enough or do I need the screen to actually be open? (on Android)

I've researched this but can't find good answers, hoping you nostriches can help me out. If I have phoenix wallet and want to accept lightning payments, can I go to receive and generate an invoice and have multiple people pay me with the same invoice? Can my phone be offline and then receive those payments when online, or does it have to be connected at the same second a user tries to pay me? If I have to be online, if I "swipe away" the app in Android, does having the "background service" running count as "online"? #asknostr

I would also add that one of Bitcoin's major strengths in relation to other potential currencies is its stable economic policy which people basically consider immutable. Bitcoin's fiscal policy is a fixed supply and being based around PoW. Look at Ethereum, they have changed fiscal policy several times, maybe that's a fine thing for a network which is built around making a distributed compute platform, but it's not a good thing for something which is designed to be the new global reserve currency. Changing any of these key things with Bitcoin could change the stability of that fiscal policy. If we open the door to fiscal policy changes, we lose a major item on Bitcoin's feature list.

I am concerned that while Bitcoin may have arrived at the best technical solutions and may have the largest network effect, we are losing the social battle for adoption. Bitcoin was once unheard of, and when I mentioned it to people, I was met with confusion. Now, I am met with hostility. People are actively hostile towards something that has already been explained to them by people who hate Bitcoin. The first ten minutes of the conversation are debunking easily debunked talking points they have already been given "Bitcoin is bad for the environment", "Bitcoin is only used by criminals", etc. All the Bitcoin messaging I do see out in the wild is focused on gains chasing, investing, ETFs, etc. Much of it is about comparing Bitcoin to other coins on technical basis without going into the philosophy or values of Bitcoin which are IMO much more important, because they explain why we don't want 1,000 TPS on main chain.
There are some developments in this space, at least in the USA. We do now have a bipartisan PAC funding politicians who are crypto friendly. We do now have some lobbying groups. We have a few CEOs who are willing to spread the gospel of satoshi on MSNBC etc. But what we don't have is good messaging in most public squares. This is a thing I would love to contribute financially to solving, but I have found it hard to find places to give money to for this purpose.
I think it is easy to dismiss concerns that we are "losing the social war" as irrelevant. Bitcoin continues to grow every year, it will keep growing, people will adopt it as it becomes more dominant. But even if everybody switched to Bitcoin overnight, if they do not understand the values that underpin the network and what Bitcoin's promise truly is, Bitcoin can lose its way and turn into just another shitcoin. We will end up with contentious forks. You can point at the rules and incentives built into the network all you want, and they can fend off a lot of attacks and problems, but ultimately Bitcoin is a social currency, it is dependent on people to run, its system of rules is democratic as a basis, if we end up with too many people who want to change the rules to make it more like something else, that will happen.
Would be interested in hearing rebuttals/thoughts on this topic. And also ways I can help fund social outreach if it exists.

This is obnoxious gatekeeping. People will continue to use KYCed platforms until UX of #NoKYC platforms improves. If the UX there is better, people will have no motivation to use anything else. If Bitcoin is dependent on everybody being technologically savvy and interested enough to navigate a complex series of menus and understand how block timing works, we will never reach hyperbitcoinization.
