If you know C++, look at BOINC (boinc.berkeley.edu). It's a cross-platform, open source tool and permission-less network (anybody can run a boinc project) for distributing large computational loads to computers of volunteers. It's used for cancer research, finding asteroids, and sifting through data from the large hadron collider. Massive userbase but very little dev time. Some of the issues on the github even have bounties on them.
