On bluesky I had an interesting discussion with a developer who was curious about fedi and expanding some of their bluesky projects over here. https://bsky.app/profile/tycooperaow.bsky.social/post/3ld2psjqxes2n I sent them a bunch of things to look at like fediobserver in the follow up replies https://bsky.app/profile/puppygirlhornypost.bsky.zoner.work/post/3ld2sqwljhc2d so we might actually have some people looking to bring their projects to fedi! There have also been some protocol level discussions https://github.com/swicg/activitypub-trust-and-safety in regards to some of our user safety issues. And, what's even cooler https://github.com/swicg/activitypub-trust-and-safety/issues/4 the possibility of bringing Bluesky's labeling system over here. It's still very much in development but I have hope again that we can make this network a better place.

I'd just like to remind everyone that just because you do not see things from your perspective, that doesn't mean they don't exist or that they do not happen. I get that you may be skeptical of someone's experiences but there is a fine line in trying to verify that experience and outright denying that it happens at all. Please please please don't be so quick to shut other people up because their experiences don't align with yours. I am so fucking sick of it, this is why black queers don't feel comfortable here. this is why there's not as many transmasc individuals here. I'm not saying you should blindly believe people, but instead of quickly dismissing it outright take it with a grain of salt. have it at the back of your mind, see if other people experience it. @nprofile…x759 @nprofile…4pjf well, a big problem is that it's really hard to find something with just one of those points. I genuinely hate how so much of modern regulation has lead to these middlemen who handle things for you like shopify and other payment processors. Stripe is just one of many of those sort of companies and I don't really trust them. I mean they're inexpensive but the problem is that you're opening up "we're sending your data to third parties" and making your users agree to a third party's terms of service in order to use your platform. I am unsure of UK laws regarding how hard it would be to just process IDs yourself. I don't know what the criteria is for storing that information and keeping it private.

While we're on the topic of human trafficking I'd like to touch a bit on child sex trafficking from my perspective. I live in a state where it's so common all of our public schools have posters plastered around them on how to spot the signs and what to do. I am not going to repeat all of that, just the one I've seen personally on fedi multiple times at this point. Minors please be careful. If you live in an abusive situation at home with no support group, and you make posts about such things... be very weary if an adult is telling you they have a way out for your situation. I know not every adult on here is extending that offer out of malice. I've seen it enough times though to be a concerning pattern. If they start to give you a lot of attention, in particular something akin to "love-bombing", if they start to flirt with you (whether that's little compliments that are just out of place or more sexual) please take a step back and talk to someone you trust.
I've seen too many minors (especially queer minors) seek out the internet because they can see people similar to them. Hell, I did it. I fell for it, my groomers made me feel things I never felt before. I liked the way they complimented my body, to me the age gap wasn't a concern (18-19 i was 14 but being 21 now I definitely have icks). It was something that I couldn't get anywhere else. I've seen minors on fedi get caught up in that sort of love bombing, isolation and what's even more concerning is the promise of "live with me". If an adult is telling you things like "oh your thighs are so pretty" and is offering you a place to stay, or is saying "well when you turn 18 we can live together"... run. You need to take a step back from that situation. I don't have a correct answer for what to do after you notice but I do know you shouldn't go with them. It's human trafficking 101, abusers want to isolate a victim away from their friends, family. Don't let them do it.

Never ever ever accept that always demand you have a work issued phone because it is such a breach of privacy. I really like how Fedi empowers people to focus less on things like user count and retention. Community members come and go, it’s a fact of life. As we do not earn profit off of advertisements, selling user data we are not incentivized to have a bunch of people on the instance. It allows us to attend to the community, trying to find people who want to stay long term and who will enjoy their stay.

As much as I can appreciate history I prefer my handbooks to just give me the necessary information to do what I want to accomplish. Sure, it’s a bit disappointing that it doesnt dive too deeply into jail networking but it’s understandable due to the various options for firewalls on FreeBSD. I think the pages for firewalls and advanced networking more than make up for it.

Tons of genuine resources out there that not only give you a brief overview of something but implore you to try more complicated concepts and to play with it yourself. Most Linux guides read the same of "do this command, do that. done" but FreeBSD feels different from that.

"noticed you were idle in teams" or being met with an instant question the second you open it up first thing in the morning? as a developer I can easily see someone working on code being productive with their ide full screen and just not going over to teams that often. Teams going into idle and that person being reprimanded for not working. I’ve heard so many fucking stories of this. IM and Statuses are the single worst thing to happen.

Seeing how work from home users were met with spyware that monitors their status on teams… and how people purchased devices and software for "mouse jiggling" to make the software mark their status as online instead of idle. I think the number one worst invention was the idea of "statuses" especially live statuses. I try to disable them when I can, because the idea of people seeing "Oh Amber’s online right now she must be available" is so fucking creepy to me. Just… send a message and I will get back to you on my own time. I hate having this "announce to everyone in online" event happen every fucking time I use something. You know, what if I want to just play a steam game and k don’t want to announce to everyone "AMBER IS ONLINE STEAM, AMBER IS PLAYING A GAME!!". Sure offline mode but that’s not a solution.

honestly with how increasingly hostile everything is getting I’d love to have "gender” become unused in most account settings. genuinely, why does Facebook or any other social media platform need my gender? A pronouns field sure. Handy. Can just use your bio but why have an option to select a gender? Sometimes, if you don't know how to approach the person and calm them down it's better that you do not interact if all you're going to do is post the suicide hotline number. I get it - I really do, you want to help.
