That’s like a HELOC. I never would have guessed on the of the impacts bitcoin would have on my life is me deciding on how to increase the amount of debt I get in to.
I bought my wife a mini van, debt free, in 2017 by selling 7 bitcoin. This was super dumb and reflected my understanding of bitcoin at the time. Had I gone into dollar debt to buy the minivan, I would have enough to buy multiple cybertrucks.

Totally agree. But you can even give away bitcoin and people still won’t get it. I have $50 in bitcoin to a guy in 2016 and literally a few minutes later he could not recall the 6 digit PIN code the bread wallet app made him use. He was a 4 digit PIN code kind of guy. That cost him about $5,000. And maybe now he will learn.
People need to be motivated out of self interest. And sometimes pain, fomo, or even mockery converts people far faster than pushing education to people who don’t see the need to be educated.

Oh, and if you want a maximally private node, you can’t use the internet. I feed my node via broadcast satellite…Blockstream broadcasts all new transactions, new blocks and all old blocks on a loop. All you need to do is setup a receiver and you can feed your node everything it needs (modulo trusting that Blockstream doesn’t spend hundreds of thousands of dollars to create fake but valid proof of work block headers!)

We all know rate of bitcoin production drops by 50% every 4 years.
But this is equivalent to saying half of all the remaining bitcoin will be created in each 4 year cycle.
So while it’s true 99% of all bitcoin will be mined by ~2032 and the last 1% will be mined over the following ~100 years, about half of that remaining 1% will be mined in the first 4 of those 100 years.

You can just relay nothing. One can literally listen over satellite and receive transactions just fine. When one needs to broadcast a transaction, go to a cafe and relay via Blockstream.info or other such broadcast service.

I think I kind of understand the block relay thing now. Core’s position is actually reasonable. Relay filters are objectively bad for UTXO set size as this forces shitcoin devs to take a more difficult but cheaper (on chain) approach to data storage with outputs that can’t be proven to be unspendable.

I still can’t figure out why people get so fired up over relay policy…what am I missing? Last I checked, one can choose to only receive blocks, not transactions, and not relay anything at all…
Is it good that consensus rules permit data storage? Maybe, maybe not, but definitely not for JPG’s and dick picks. When non-standard transactions get mined, bad stuff happens for miners and non-miners. There are probably fewer nonstandard transactions getting mined because of relay policy, but how much resource consumption will occur because of permitting spam txs to be relayed? If it’s a lot, then perhaps a soft fork is necessary.

If it becomes too expensive to transact on chain, and it becomes too expensive to transact on chain in sufficient fashion to run a censorship resistant L2 network, then bitcoin literally becomes digital gold: totally centralized.
Bitcoin is far from condemned to such a future. But it needs work. And balance to keep a network running…miners need a reason to mine and users need to be able to transact at prices reasonable for the value onchain transactions provide. But new software needs to be written to make the best use of block space and that work is under way.

There is no such thing, or nearly no such thing, as land ownership in the US. In USA, you purchase exclusive usage rights of the land, a little bit of the space above the land, and sometimes what lies beneath the land. Rarely some people buy land and pay a lump sum lifetime tax to own the land until they die, then they can transfer it to someone who pays land tax annually (like outside las Vegas during the boom years, this was not rare).
Bitcoin is land without tax.

I totally agree that bitcoin value will grow a lot faster for a lot longer than most expect. But some fees will eventually be necessary as subsidy will long be insufficient for moving the chain forward before subsidy goes to zero.
And we have proof that people will pay for securing the network. The 2017 block size wars featured an attack on block space and fees went up to a very significant fraction of the subsidy. And ordinals did the same, albeit for less time.
Anyone arguing we need high fees now is missing the value of bitcoin. But arguing transaction fees will never be necessary I think is almost provably false.

I think you misunderstand the math here. Parabolic is very slowly growing compared to exponential as time increases.
Take any graphic calculator or app and plot y=x^2 (a prabola) and y=2^x (an exponential) and you’ll see one grows way way way way faster than the other.
The reality is that all exponential things eventually either go to zero (in the decreasing case) or stop being exponential (in the increasing case). Why? Because exponential growth eventually becomes so large we run out of physical things such wildly large numbers could represent…compared to exponential growth, even the number of atoms in the universe is small…

I’ve always wondered about these expensive steak programs. I often get rib eye at $7-10/lb (with bone) but all the expensive steaks are boneless. Even adjusting for bone weight, the expensive steaks are still double or more the cost of my local store beef per pound.
I’ve had A4 Kobe wagyu from Japan, so I’m not unaware of how different some beef can be, but I have a hard time telling the difference between the more common price points.

You misunderstand the meta analysis and your actual question. Your question is equivalent to: “do mammograms decrease the rate of death by breast cancer?”
I’m gonna leave other subjects out of this for the moment because we will end up skimming the surface without being rigorous about what proof we actually seek.
That said, a better question than yours would be: “do mammograms increase lifespan?”
See the subtle difference? What good is it to save women from breast cancer if they become unbelievably more likely to die by lightning strike or alien abduction precisely because of mammograms? Competing causes of death matter and looking at lifespan allows us to consider all causes of mortality, reasonable and otherwise. To my knowledge, it’s never been proven reducing breast cancer by any means actually increases lifespan. It’s an assumption that treating disease leads to increased lifespan. It’s logical, but hard, expensive, and takes a very long time to study.
The meta analysis looks at 28 studies of breast cancer mortality reduction…the comparison groups are those who don’t use mammogram for detecting breast cancer. We have tons of data on rate of death for many diseases over many decades; we assume old rates are relevant today, and that’s a big issue with vaccines. Because the diseases the last few decades of childhood vaccines have been intended to prevent have become so rare, what is the acceptable risk from the vaccine itself? In the old days, risk of disease was high. But now risk of disease is low and our ability to treat is better. A similar argument can be made for breast cancer: treatment is better now than 20 years ago, does early detection still matter?
The rabbit holes go deep. But one common theme you’ll find is the real science rabbit holes are unbelievably deep; the pseudoscience rabbit holes are rather shallow, surprisingly shallow some times.

As far as death from breast cancer, screening mammogram has been studied. A lot. And a lot of people have a vested interest in proving mammograms to be 1) beneficial, 2) not beneficial and 3) needing more study.
You can’t remove the human element from anything. Most studies show benefit of mammography as a screening tool. But most studies have at least some bias (like 85%!).

2) compression is part of how image contrast is generated. Tomosynthesis (like CT of the breast) was around in 1990 and doctors spent 20 years to realize compression is still necessary even with “slices” through the breast. It wasn’t FDA approved until 2011 because everyone was trying to avoid compression.

For me, if the price were right I’d do whole body screening mri. But I wouldn’t pay more than $1,000 for it at my age. I’d pay more in 10 years and even more in 20 though. But that’s only because I know and am comfortable with low probability positive exam findings.

Block and tx data won’t generate an INV message until validated, IIRC. So nodes won’t relay stuff they don’t know is valid or not.
But as a matter of miner node policy, maybe nodes would consider counting opcodes or some other metric/approximation of resource utilization and use that in required fee calculation for transactions and not just on data size alone.

I had a similar issue for years and eventually switched to a business account to pay more for less bandwidth just because they wouldn’t fix the cable for a residential customer. I even had to get a microwave backup connection, which was only 10 mbps, and a Pfsense router to pick the best route for my packets.

In Bitcoin, there are really two drivers of transaction fees. Everyone thinks about block space being the driver of transaction fees, and it is the main one, but there is a small but measurable negative effect for the miner to add a transaction to the block they’re working on: the block propagation race.
You see, “finding” or “solving” a block isn’t itself enough for you to earn bitcoin. Others must mine on top of your block. The bigger your block, and I suppose the longer it takes to verify, the longer it will be before other miners receive and accept your block and start extending the chain that point as opposed to continuing to try to find their own block which would effectively replace yours.
IIRC, @npub1ej4…ndrm posted about this to the bitcoin mailing list quite some time ago. He did the calculus on it and I don’t remember the details, but my feeling is that the result was surprising and not in a good way. Maybe that’s why we have “stratum” and other brilliant things for fast block propagation (which think @npub185h…wrdp corallo wrote as like a teenager).

@npub12ct…c5ky this is the new firmware made yesterday for the Q. This is the Login Settings menu.
What happened to trick pins?
My other Q on edge firmware from January has the menu item.
My third Q is wrapped in tin foil, packed in a metal box, and buried in concrete 4 states away so I can’t verify if this menu was there on older mainline firmware 😂
