I actually prefer it unscented. It's just tallow and a lye solution. I melt the tallow, make up the lye by adding it to water then pour the lye solution into the tallow and blend it until it's the consistency of pudding. Then into the mould to set. 48 hrs later I cut it up and leave it to cure for 6 weeks.
There are soap calculatorsonline you can use to work out the right amount of lye solution to tallow.

There's no such thing as "plant based milk".
That is nut water.
Nut water!
Admittedly I can understand why they call it milk. The marketing of nut water would be challenging to say the least.
Also for those who drink nut water conscientiously check the ingredients list to make sure you aren't drinking vegetable oil or a bunch of unnamable chemicals, flavour enhancers or dyes.

We get around 750mm a year but we have a very dry summer with almost no rainfall at all so would need something fairly drought hardy. I'll see what I can find with others locally who are having success.

Something between 7-9. We have pretty dry summers here so that would be my only concern. We've only had 6mm of rain since the start of the year. But we've got the infrastructure in place to supplement water as needed. I'm looking into some companion planting options and maybe I'll put in an elderberry guild when the rain starts.

I'm in an Australian zone 6 which is roughly equivalent to a 7-9 USDA zone. It's a Mediterranean climate with a very hot, dry summer and a cold winter with frost but no snow.

Todays project: Honey Tallow Face Cream
Super easy to make!

80g rendered tallow
40g local raw honey
20g castor oil
50 drops pure Frankincense oil
Add them all in together and blend with a stick blender. You can melt the tallow if you want to and mix the honey into the warm tallow first but then you need to chill it for 30 min until semi firm before whipping for the best results. I'm really happy with the chuck it all in method.
I've found I only need the very smallest amount to get a lovely silky feeling when it's all rubbed it. I'm excited to see how my skin responds to it over the next fortnight. I might make a few tweaks to the next batch based on my results.

Need some recommendations from #homesteading and #dogstr.
Bess the beagle has unlocked digging abilities and uped her unsanctioned adventures through the surrounding properties chasing after kangaroos.
I need a solution to keep her in.
I've started putting a chicken mesh skirt around the yard and she's pushing through the fencing wire of the mesh fence now too. Thinking about an electric option but I don't wasn't to be cruel.
Has anyone else dealt with an escape artist successfully?

It's made with Tallow, water and lye.
I use rainwater because that's all we have. Next batch I'll add a small amount of bees wax as I think it will make the bars a little less soft.

New first in the ongoing quest for self sufficiency.
Homemade tallow soap.
Made from our first on farm processed beef.
I used the leaf fat from around the kidneys which is lovely buttery yellow in colour and much less beefy smelling.

If you don't have your own animals you can harvest tallow straight from your cooked meats by saving the juices in the pan after cooking or roasting meat or even making bone broth. Once the juices have cooled collect up the solid fat from the top. Or you could ask your butcher for the leaf fat and you might get lucky.

I was a little overwhelmed with my garden this growing season.

We put our first steer in the freezer today. One we bought and raise ourselves. This is a huge level up for us.
The next level up is when they are born on the farm and are processed on the farm. That is still about two years away for us with our first go of breeding happening at the end of Feb.

I separate the eggs. Start by whipping up the whites to a soft peak, then whip the cream with sugar and the yolks. Gently fold the two together trying.g not to knock all the air out of the whites and gently still in my flovours at the end. The egg whites give it the fluffy texture of churned icecream.

We've been surprised by home quickly our cost of living dropped after starting homesteading full time.
The overall quality of what we eat has improved significantly and the cost reduced. We have our first steer going in the freezer in 2 weeks and I grow almost all of our vegetables.
Community has been outmost valuable resource and we trade for anything we don't have.

There are plenty of guns in Australia. They are ownd for use as tools as well as for recreation.
There is a waiting period for a new licence and you cant own a gun if you have a history of violent crime, domestic violence or serious mental heath problems.
And there are storage rules that they must be kept in a locked gunsafe when not in use.
A huge amount of guns were surended after the Port Arthur Massacre in the 90's and it's a fun meme to say that australia gave back all our guns but it's not true.

This year had so many great and challenging things.
Moving interstate, showing up mindfully in my relationship, leaving a high paced job, settling down into homesteading full time and moving more slowly through my days.
As I’m slowing down I’m finding how much more life I have time for.

Last year I went without drinking alcohol and learned a lot about myself; this year I went without buying new clothes and unexpectedly learned even more about myself through the process.

This week I knelt in a bull ant nest while fixing some fencing and four days later I’m still nursing the painful bites on my leg.
Here’s the only useful thing I learned from this experience:
If you are sitting on an ants nest it’s not because life put you there, you put yourself there and you are the only one who can change this situation. Own your mistake and own the solution.
Also calamine lotion is surprisingly effective.

Yeah this is my preference too. I’ve gone with temperature and had really inconsistent results. I do wonder if it’s more to do with the types of fruit I’m using and hitting that perfect temperature but the spoon and the plate give me a at better results.

The Australian gov is planning to pass a bill in 6 months that would ban social media for under 16yo and will result in all Australians having to KYC for legacy socials access. Most people will probs just follow along but some might start to look for alternatives. I agree that it will take time but maybe not too long.

We use a tool grimly called ‘The Finisher’. Just straight in at the base of the skull and a little twist. Very quick, no blood and no fuss.

Anyone processing their own poultry I can highly recommend you look into pithing. It’s so much cleaner than cones or guillotines and much less stressful for the bird and the humans.
