There is no strain on bandwidth from missed transactions (even though that also isn’t happening anyway). The transaction is downloaded either way, either when broadcast, or when added to a block. But default compact block filtering actually keeps all transactions that are valid, even those being filtered, in expectation of them being in a block.
Essentially this argument being paraded around has no example of it in reality. It’s just some theory being tossed around that kinda sounds good, imo. Transactions are downloaded by every node no matter what the relay policy is. The only question is when.
I read both posts twice and I’m honestly not getting where you think she argued Bitcoin was a generic database, even though that’s the position you seem to be debating.
Her claim on the book is that *money* is a ledger system. And it is, but that also isn’t a claim that it’s a generic database. Her logic is going the other direction, not claiming what can or ought to be written on or even what that “ledger” look like, only that successful money is able to behave as a ledger system, both physical and digital forms.

Look at this post from the owner of Gab — nearly six figures just to keep it running, yet barely any users subscribe to Gab Pro. I remember reading their annual report: they had to take out a massive loan just to stay afloat. They even launched an investment group promising a stake in Gab and future profits, but it flopped — hardly anyone invested.
At one point, they disabled image uploads for non-paying users, but it backfired. Most users left, and they had to walk it back. Gab constantly complains about freeloaders draining their resources and I’ve said it before many times:
fiat-world users expect everything for free. Big Tech trained them that way.
Gab doesn’t have the bottomless fiat reserves of Facebook or X. You can’t outspend corporate tech.
Now enter Nostr — decentralized, far more powerful, and built so users can actually earn from their content.
In other words. Nostr is bad for gab.
Lots of credit to Gab’s founder for pushing hard to create a platform when X was banning people and Nostr didn’t yet exist. He gave people a place.
I used to like Gab at the beginning but it has since been declining in userbase and gotten quite boring.
While I was on Gab, I noticed a lot of users were anti-Bitcoin and I always felt Gab users have the fiat mentality that's probably why very few are willing to go pro.

Seems like nostr is the perfect fit for this. Imagine being able to discover products across individual shops but all in one place - or through curated collections. And you don’t even need to know where the sale came from because there could be hundreds of marketplaces all aiding in the same goal: sales.
Nostr is not your backup identity when centralized and legacy platforms fail you. Nostr is your identity. You own it. You're in control of it. Full stop.

I recommend following at least 500 people. Two great ways to find more people to follow are by seeing who other people follow, and seeing who is active in replies on notes/content you like. It’s actually not true despite it being a common refrain:

In an inflationary market, really good products literally choke the company’s longevity by squeezing out future sales. In a deflationary one, the best products distributed the furthest grant enormous advantage and capacity to build more truly valuable improvements.

I've decided to stop posting on X, Gab & Truth Social.
X has barley any real engagement and is overrun with bots farms & propaganda—honestly, it's just a waste of time.
Gab started out promising, but it’s become boring due to its small user base. It’s also centralized and doesn’t offer any way to monetize our post, which makes me doubt its long-term viability.
Truth Social is in a similar position. While it might eventually surpass Gab, it still suffers from the same core issues: no monetization options and a centralized structure, which doesn’t inspire confidence for the future. It's really boring there.
Nostr, on the other hand, offers real engagement. It’s organic, meaningful but most importantly, It's provides opportunities to earn money from our posts.
Nostr is also decentralized—no risk of being banned, and full freedom to post.
I truly believe Nostr will continue to grow and become even more influential.

Most people are still followers, which is actually fine in the context of choice and self responsibility. But in a bad system that creates contradictory incentives, the above reality causes terrible long term consequences.
It’s basically true in either context, but in one environment, toxic incentives cause enormous suffering, while in another it enables strong standardization without hampering creativity and change.
(I almost didn’t respond because of your “I can’t believe Lyn Alden renoted this” remark. If you want to add a thought go ahead. But the moralization of casual social interaction and thinking out loud just comes off as entitled and holier-than-thou. Just a suggestion.)

I've been saying from the start that the government of El Salvador was secretly paying both foreigners and locals to promote the country as a Bitcoin paradise. The good news is that many Bitcoiners are smarter and more skeptical than the average fiat-minded person, making them harder to fool.
Many of the videos and X profiles pushing this narrative were met with Bitcoiners calling out the lies and exposing the propaganda.
President Bukele had no idea what he was doing. He thought that attracting Bitcoiners from around the world to live in El Salvador would bring in massive investment. The reality is that only a tiny fraction of the global population owns Bitcoin, and an even smaller fraction has become wealthy from it.

Even if that small group did move to El Salvador, the investment impact would be minimal. Most Bitcoiners are long-term holders, saving for retirement—not looking to pour money into a developing country. And let’s be honest: most wealthy Bitcoiners wouldn’t consider relocating to El Salvador. It’s a third-world country with prices that don’t match the value it offers. There are far better, cheaper, and more developed options available for high-net-worth individuals.
One thing most Bitcoiners agree on: never trust a government, even when it claims to support Bitcoin. As long as governments are part of the fiat system, they lack real accountability.
Like you said in your video, most El Salvadorans are struggling to survive. They live paycheck to paycheck, with little savings or purchasing power. Bitcoin won’t help them much in the short term—but it might be a step in the right direction.
Ultimately, Bitcoin adoption must come from the people—not from governments trying to force it top-down.

Social has become the dominant mode by which we experience the internet. Its purpose is to filter information through our social tribes. Which is a GREAT thing, not a bad one as many assume.
The bad part is that it has been owned by platforms, rather than the user. It always necessitated a protocol from the beginning, and was never going to work otherwise. But now seeing its potential and that it’s completely open and permissionless to build on, this is going to change the entire web from top to bottom.
I now have over 4,600 notes. Don’t underestimate the value of building a foundation in this place, because we will be able to use it for a million things that were never possible on closed, centralized systems.

The Thai restaurant I used to visit occasionally has closed down. Not surprised, everytime I went there, the place was empty and I guess my habit of not tipping also didn’t help. Now I’ll have to learn how to make Tom Yum soup myself.
It used to be that restaurants in Canada would last at least five years. Then it became three. Now, I’m seeing places shut down within a year. Things have really gotten bad for small businesses. Only corporations can survive.
Still not tipping though—this tipping culture is nonsense and out of control!

Just listened to it. Always love me some BTCgandalf. Talented and smart guy. He’s right on the point about being able to duplicate your audience/account growth once you have the skills if your existing account gets rugged by a platform, but who really wants to have to do that? It is especially problematic for artists/creators who depend on direct payouts from those platforms, because the time they have to spend rebuilding their following is time they’re not getting paid. Nostr + Bitcoin provides a solution to that problem existing in the first place.
I also see value in his point about maintaining an email list, at least for now. But I also consider that approach as simply using existing/legacy technologies to achieve a semblance of the decentralization and “rug-proof-ness” that is baked into nostr by default. Nostr user base isn’t large enough to replace email lists yet, so it’s good to build one, but I think it would be better to use that email list as a funnel to direct your audience to your content on nostr rather than relying on email itself to deliver your content and messaging.
Nostr is a new internet with social and payments baked in, open and decentralized. Any creator NOT building their audience and presence on Nostr is shooting thrmselves in the foot in the long run.
Rep told me how the router wasn't dialling out while I was watching it dialling out, establishing connection only to get dropped after a few seconds. I told her and she told me how I was wrong and how they need to send a new router. On my second call I went straight to tech support and the dude actually understood the language, changed the port, problem solved. 🤦♂️

I have ad-block and since recently when I open YouTube I'll get a message that ad-blockers aren't allowed and then YT refreshes the page pausing ad-block. You can see how the shield goes from red to green.

Amazing. My mum has a friend who recently took a "Bitcoin seminar" for several K only to end up with Ripple cause "someone" told her it's going to $5. So she shifted the BTC to Ripple. My mum wanted to meet her because she wants to talk about day-trading. I kindly there is nothing to talk about and to tell her to get rid of Ripple before BTC breaks 108k.
