Between Signal and Telegram, Signal is generally considered more secure from an encryption, anonymity, and metadata secrecy perspective. Here’s why:
1. End-to-End Encryption (E2EE):
Signal: All messages, voice calls, video calls, and attachments are end-to-end encrypted by default. This means that only the sender and receiver can read the content, and even Signal cannot access the communication.
Telegram: Only Secret Chats are end-to-end encrypted. Regular chats, by default, are not end-to-end encrypted; they are only encrypted between the client and the server (server-side encryption), meaning that Telegram servers have access to regular messages.
2. Open Source and Auditing:
Signal: The Signal protocol is open source and has been publicly audited, meaning independent security researchers can verify its security claims.
Telegram: While parts of Telegram’s code are open source (client-side apps), the encryption protocol it uses (MTProto) has been criticized for being custom-built and less transparent. Its server-side code is closed source, so there’s less visibility into how data is stored and managed.
3. Metadata Handling:
Signal: Signal is designed to minimize metadata collection. It only stores minimal metadata, such as the last time a user connected to the service, but not who they communicated with or when. Signal also supports features like "Sealed Sender" to obscure who is sending messages.
Telegram: Telegram collects more metadata compared to Signal, especially for non-Secret Chats. Telegram’s server infrastructure can log information about who is communicating with whom, when, and from which IP addresses.
4. Anonymity and Privacy:
Signal: Signal requires a phone number for registration, which could compromise anonymity. However, they have introduced support for using Signal with anonymizing services like Tor, and there are workarounds for using Signal without revealing your actual phone number.
Telegram: Telegram also requires a phone number for registration, but it offers slightly more flexibility in using usernames to communicate without exposing your phone number. However, because it lacks full end-to-end encryption by default, your privacy could be at risk.
5. Secrecy of Metadata:
Signal: With features like "Sealed Sender" and minimal metadata collection, Signal is optimized to obscure as much communication metadata as possible.
Telegram: Since Telegram’s regular chats are not end-to-end encrypted and its metadata is logged on its servers, it is less secure in terms of protecting metadata compared to Signal.
6. Trust and Centralization:
Signal: Signal is operated by a nonprofit organization with a strong privacy-first ethos. It uses centralized servers but with a clear focus on minimizing data collection and protecting user privacy.
Telegram: Telegram is centralized and run by a private company, and its infrastructure is not as transparent as Signal’s. Telegram stores encryption keys on its servers, which could potentially be accessed if the servers were compromised.
Summary:
Signal is better for encryption, security, and privacy, especially regarding metadata secrecy and minimizing data collection. Its open-source nature and end-to-end encryption by default make it a top choice for secure communication.
Telegram is more flexible and user-friendly but lacks the same level of default encryption and transparency. For strong encryption, Telegram’s Secret Chats must be used, but regular chats remain less secure.
If security and metadata privacy are your top concerns, Signal is the better choice.

Dave Ramsey's "powdered butt syndrome"
I wish you were being facetious
True. Just tell them to give your inheritance in bitcoin. They might find some tax advantage in doing so. Other than that, boomers were never interested in sacrificing to make it better for their children. All they did was party it up and "fight" for feminism while they neutered the next three generations
No matter how much you think you are getting through to your parents on various topics like nutrition, religion, politics or money, the best you can do is get them to patronize you. Behind your back they are telling people you are nuts. This is true whether you are a man or a woman.
Ecash is backed by a promise, it has no direct control over anything on the blockchain (unlike lightning). Cashu anf Fedi are largely the same, tokens redeemable for bitcoin either by the holders of the fedi multisig onchain, or by the mint's lightning node (which may not have routable liquidity)
Or many reasons why both types of people are needed in a society. This is real DE&I IMO.

Getting back to your OP. I think my point is that eventually MSTR will be a liquidity provider and will be in the business of lending out bitcoin. But their bags will never be useful for that purpose until some low risk lendee comes along and will pay a premium for the privilege of servicing a loan on the bitcoin. Alternatively, MSTR could issue ecash tokens backed by their stash, and charge an issuance, redemption and/or transaction fee for using said tokens (e.g. cashu)
#asknostr Question: As long as people accept fiat, under what circumstance would one need to take out a loan of bitcoin?

Gresham's law is a law of the buyer in a transaction. The reverse of that applies to the seller. As long as there are two competing media of exchange operating in parallel, the unit of account will move to whichever medium is more predictable. When bitcoin becomes the unit of account, fiat is superfluous
Yes, and that drives the value of fiat down at such a rate that eventually the average person/business won't accept it in pay/transactions.

Saifedean Ammous's argument, to paraphrase is: According to Gresham's Law, fiat currencies are inherently flawed due to inflation and government control. As Bitcoin adoption grows, people will increasingly hold Bitcoin (the "good money") and spend fiat (the "bad money"), eventually leading to a world where Bitcoin becomes the primary form of money. This gradual process, amplified by economic instability in fiat currencies, results in hyperbitcoinization.
I keep hearing people use gresham's law in reverse to argue for bitcoin
What good is hodling 100,000 coins if it isn't eventually to leverage them by spending them into the economy?

It's time for Metal Transmitted by Relays, where I feature lesser known metal bands and subgenres each week. Continuing our Tolkien theme, today we have metal from the deep places of the world.
Khazad Dum is a band named after the Dwarven name for Moria, the ancient, abandoned, underground stronghold of the Dwarves. And what sound did they choose to accompany their Dwarven motif?
Funeral Doom.
(Shout-out to Wind Rise for their Dwarf theme, but sorry, Doom Metal is way more "Dwarven" than Folk/Power metal.)
Khazad Dum has released one album, "Hymns from the Deep". It's a concept album about the Fellowship's journey through Moria.
Funeral Doom is the ultimate low-time- preference music. It's best experienced in it's entirety.

The only lyrics I was able to find.
STONES OF SORROW
"Ithkêl murbêl
Buh Dashât sadishîn
Doom of the deep folk wrote on blackened blades
Tidings of Balin’s fate through tale of plight
Stones of sorrow tell their tale as light fades
Wrought by hands of time in stillness of night
Hooded faces silent beside the tomb
Reflecting upon the brave lord’s lone quest
Went alone to look in Mirror mere’s gloom
An arrow in the dark death manifest
Grim readings sing bloody tunes of cruel ends
Cloven shields and helms conjoin words to deeds
Morning’s end to dread and horror extends
Vile tides come to repeat prior misdeeds
They are coming
We cannot get out"

If one in 7 people in the US own bitcoin, that means if ALL of the bitcoin were held by just those people, that would mean the average holding would be 43.6 million sats or about $27,000 total. My guess its closer to 1/7 of the bitcoin is distributed to the average American hodler, which puts the average American's bag at 6.2 million sats, or $4000. In either case, we can do better.

It should be called 'Twotrut' because every fucking Graphene keyboard is shit
The argument that the CIA might have created Bitcoin isn't entirely implausible when you consider the agency's broader goals, especially its role in protecting U.S. economic interests globally. While the CIA’s public mission is often framed around national security, a significant aspect of that security is economic stability. The CIA was formed in the wake of World War II, shortly after the establishment of the Bretton Woods system and NATO, and the U.S. dollar became the world’s reserve currency. Protecting the strength of the dollar and U.S. economic dominance is intrinsically tied to maintaining geopolitical influence.
One of the greatest threats to U.S. economic stability today is not an external foreign power but domestic fiscal irresponsibility—specifically, Congress's unchecked spending and the resulting accumulation of debt. This spiraling debt has led to a weakening dollar, and the fiat system underpinning global economies is increasingly fragile. The creation of Bitcoin, or a similar decentralized currency, could provide a way to gradually transition away from fiat dependence, offering nations and institutions an off-ramp from the debt-laden global central banking system. By facilitating a decentralized system, the CIA could help protect the U.S. from the catastrophic collapse of global fiat currencies while maintaining U.S. economic leadership.
While Bitcoin was not explicitly designed with censorship or central control in mind, its transparency, decentralization, and resistance to manipulation might be features rather than bugs from the perspective of U.S. interests. A decentralized currency would provide the U.S. government—or any government—a way to operate outside the constraints of traditional financial systems, as the OP suggests, but its public ledger would also ensure a degree of trust in the system. The fact that Bitcoin has survived so long without being “broken” speaks to its resilience and adaptability—features the CIA or similar entities might have found appealing as a hedge against financial collapse.
Furthermore, when we "follow the money," the lack of clear evidence for or against CIA involvement should not dismiss the possibility outright. Historically, many major developments, especially in technology and economics, have had hidden origins or state involvement that only became known later. Given the CIA’s track record of involvement in various covert global operations, it’s not entirely unreasonable to speculate that a think tank or similar body within the agency could have proposed a system like Bitcoin as a solution to the looming fiat crisis.
In fact, nearly 100% of the time, the widely accepted narratives about events of major consequence have proven to be incomplete or even false upon deeper investigation. Whether or not the CIA created Bitcoin, the idea that a decentralized, censorship-resistant currency could help stabilize or transition the global economic system is in line with broader U.S. goals of maintaining global financial leadership. Thus, dismissing this possibility entirely seems premature without considering the CIA's role in shaping economic policies for the long-term stability of the U.S. and its allies.

The SEC should understand that the success of bitcoin means any pubicly traded company that resists it will fail, including banks. It also means nearly all public securities will lose value because nobody in their right mind will park their money in a zero-nominal-growth marginal-dividend nonzero-risk instrument when they can hold bitcoin. Yes, minibits supports nwc and thats how i zap on nostr. Its amazing, never need to start app, always works in background!
I just tried the coinos cashu wallet. Its not a typical ecash wallet, only supports swaps to their mint, and even that is broken. I wouldnt recommend it.
There are several PWAs and several apps that target android (minibits), and some that target both ios and android (enuts). The wallet is completely independent of the mint, cashu ecash is a protocol not a platform, so you can connect many wallets to the same mint and move the balance between wallets BUT the balance is IN THE WALLET not in some kind of account that can be shared between devices. Its kind of the opposite model of bitcoin. Only one wallet at a time can hold a token (or claim) for bitcoin on a mint, unless you issue a token from your wallet to send and it remains unclaimed. In that case, the new token is reclaimable by the wallet and the sats "exist" anywhere the token is. If you email or SMS the token, any copy of the token could be claimed. Once its claimed by a wallet, the mint balance is maintained in the wallet until you create a new token to send.
A fairly good list of wallets is on this website: https://bitcoinscoresby.com/ecash/
Personally I use minibits and 0xChat. My kids use cashu.me in their browser.
Ecash is a divisible token that can be given to others anonymously. The token is like a remote control over the mint's lightning node, or a proof of deposit at the mint, allowing you to send the amount of bitcoin the token represents to anyone on the lightning network.

Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), a commonly used sulfonated ester, is often found in personal care products like shampoos, soaps, and detergents due to its effective foaming and cleaning properties. However, despite its widespread use, there are several concerns and caveats to be aware of when it comes to the potential health and environmental impacts of SLS and similar compounds.
Problems with Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS)
1. Skin Irritation: SLS is a known skin irritant, especially in people with sensitive skin. Prolonged or repeated exposure can lead to redness, dryness, and flakiness, as it strips away the natural oils that protect the skin. In some cases, it may exacerbate conditions like eczema or dermatitis. This is due to SLS’s ability to break down the skin’s natural moisture barrier, allowing for increased transdermal absorption of potentially harmful chemicals.
2. Transdermal Effect: One of the major concerns with SLS is its ability to enhance the absorption of other compounds through the skin. SLS can act as a penetration enhancer, which means that when combined with other chemicals, it can increase their transdermal uptake into the bloodstream. This is particularly concerning when these products contain endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs), such as xenoestrogens and phytoestrogens, which can mimic hormones like estrogen and interfere with the body’s hormonal balance. Over time, this may lead to reproductive health issues, early puberty, or other hormonal imbalances.
3. Contaminants in SLS: SLS production involves ethoxylation, a process that can introduce harmful byproducts such as 1,4-dioxane, a potential carcinogen. Though manufacturers often claim to remove most of these contaminants, trace amounts can remain. This is particularly concerning as 1,4-dioxane is persistent and does not easily break down, making it a potential pollutant in waterways and ecosystems.
4. Endocrine Disruption: Many personal care products contain ingredients that are xenoestrogens, synthetic chemicals that mimic estrogen in the body. These can disrupt the endocrine system, leading to various health issues such as hormonal imbalances, infertility, and even cancers like breast cancer. The presence of SLS can facilitate the absorption of these compounds through the skin, potentially increasing the risk of endocrine disruption.
Natural Alternatives
Given the potential health risks associated with SLS, many consumers are turning to more natural alternatives for personal care. Here are some examples:
1. Saponified Oils: Saponification is a chemical process that turns natural fats and oils into soap. Unlike synthetic detergents, saponified products are free from harmful chemicals and additives. Oils such as coconut, palm, olive, avocado, and pistachio are excellent choices for soap-making due to their gentle cleansing properties and nourishing effects on the skin. These soaps are biodegradable and pose no threat to the environment.
2. Saponified Aloe Vera: Aloe vera is not only soothing and hydrating but also contains natural cleansing properties. When saponified, it can create a mild soap ideal for sensitive skin or those prone to irritation. Aloe-based soaps are also great for dry skin and help retain moisture without stripping away the skin's natural oils.
3. Saponified Milk: Milk-based soaps are another alternative. Milk contains lactic acid, which has gentle exfoliating properties, and when saponified, creates a rich, creamy soap that’s great for moisturizing and nourishing the skin. Goat’s milk, in particular, has gained popularity due to its high fat content and benefits for sensitive skin.
4. Essential Oils: Natural essential oils like lemongrass, peppermint, and lavender not only add pleasant aromas but also have insect-repelling properties. Lemongrass, for example, is known to repel flying insects, while peppermint can deter parasitic insects like lice. These oils can be added to natural soaps to boost their functionality while avoiding the harsh chemicals found in synthetic fragrances.
Hair Care Alternatives to SLS
Traditionally, washing the hair didn’t require harsh soaps, and this remains true today, particularly if you have access to soft water. When using soft water, your hair will naturally shed soap residues without the need for aggressive detergents. In fact, soft water allows for a more gentle cleansing process, as it prevents soap buildup in the hair and leaves it feeling cleaner and softer without needing as much soap.
If you have hard water, which tends to leave mineral deposits and cause soap buildup, you can avoid using harsh shampoos by incorporating natural alternatives:
1. Vinegar Rinse: A diluted vinegar rinse (usually apple cider vinegar mixed with water) is an excellent way to remove soap buildup from the hair. The acidity of vinegar helps to break down the minerals in hard water and eliminates any residual soap, leaving the hair smooth and shiny. This method has been used for centuries and remains a popular alternative for those seeking to avoid synthetic conditioners.
2. Natural Oils for Hair Cleansing: Instead of using SLS-laden shampoos, you can try natural oils such as coconut oil or olive oil to clean and nourish the hair. These oils help remove dirt while preserving the scalp’s natural oils, keeping the hair soft and hydrated. They are especially beneficial for dry or curly hair types that tend to need more moisture.
Conclusion
While sodium lauryl sulfate and similar compounds are effective at cleaning, the potential health and environmental risks associated with their use cannot be ignored. From skin irritation to the facilitation of harmful chemical absorption, SLS poses significant risks, particularly when combined with other endocrine-disrupting compounds. Switching to more natural alternatives such as saponified oils, aloe, or milk-based soaps can offer a gentler and safer approach to personal care. For hair care, using soft water or natural rinses like vinegar can eliminate the need for harsh detergents, ensuring healthy hair without the risks associated with synthetic chemicals. Natural essential oils can also provide added benefits, such as insect repellent properties, without the toxic side effects.

DEI: Determined to Exterminate Individualism
Yes, but the initial write plugin checks if that user was previously approved and if so auto accepts the note. So only “unknown” pubkey events are sent for secondary processing.
Yes we don’t have IPs at all! It’s all event based analysis.
We are using a write policy to send the notes to a separate application/db that handles the “purgatory” state. Then that application inserts events back to the relay as needed.
Would not be able to do it all within a write plugin.
Always appreciate you, thanks for the answers. Seems like you have a pretty good solution going at least. So temp IP blocks only when many fresh pubkeys coming from one address. Could still cause issues for VPN users as you pointed out but at least better targeted.
Our problem is we don’t have any IP/network info on our aggregator so we have to make decisions based on only the events. I think the new system will work though.
I get your concern about multiple relays sharing block lists - not sure if it’s really preventable but I understand.
Are you not doing any IP rate limiting on nos.lol? Only pubkey/content/report based? I know you request PoW from some new pubkeys too? Do they ever provide it?
Curious how much spam you’re seeing etc
DEI: Destined for Extinctive Incompetance
Free relays that allow and store unlimited spam will simply stop working long term. It is not an option to just ignore it and let the clients filter. #note1wjf…d208
First, this is just our aggregator and filter.nostr.wine - not anyone else’s relay. Nobody is forced to use our aggregator but keeping spam off of it long term is more important to us than a slight delay in brand new pubkey discoverability.
If that #introductions hashtag is filled with infinite spam, you also will never discover the new user.
The advantage of this over WoT based relays is as soon as the user reveals themselves to be legitimate (could be after just a few minutes of their original event) none of their old content is lost.
There is going to be some cost to being discovered as a brand new pubkey on an open protocol where there are no account creation limits. We think this solution is the least harmful.
Thank you 🫡
I’m hoping noteguard will help save some drowning free relays.
We are going to publish our “purged” database and let people query it eventually. Perhaps that could be another way for free relay operators to get spam insights. We don’t have any network layer information since we are aggregating from other relays so it’s just going to be event based analysis.
This does not have anything to do with nostr.wine as it requires a payment to write and has yet to have any real spam issues!
This is all about our free relay aggregator and filter.nostr.wine.
The problem: when a brand new pubkey starts sending events, it can be difficult to tell immediately whether they are a legitimate user or spam.
Our solution: accept all new user notes temporarily in a separate database. As they send events, we continually evaluate their behavior based on several rules (and eventually by a trained model) and approve/block the pubkey.
If approved, all of their old events get added to our aggregator relay and the user is immediately discoverable. Their future notes will also go directly to the relay. If blocked, the events are sent to a purged database (for transparency and evaluation) and never reach our relay.
Still an early WIP but coming along! It doesn’t solve all the issues but it is a massive improvement on our current rules. #note19kp…6nxp
The notion of censorship resistence is whether the individual relay operator is providing a valuable service to the social network. If censorship of CP and spammers is a valuable service, those relays will succeed. If censoring political speech, or religious speech, or bigoted speech is a service deemed valuable to the network, that relay will succeed. To globally coordinate the activities of hundreds or thousands of relay operators to censor any one kind of speech is not realistic, even if there is a shared blacklist. The Outbox model makes a coordinated censorship campaign even less effective.
Doesen't the circuit change with every reconnection?
The website is a bit confusing, I agree and we have a few ideas on how to improve it. The unfortunate reality is nobody reads anything.
The “NSFW DM” is a perfect example. Users only receive that DM when connecting directly to our creatr.nostr.wine relay. Since that relay has paid content that is both SFW and NSFW, part of our user onboarding is to ask the user if they are of age and if they wish to enable NSFW content. We do that when you log in through our website and nobody has ever complained about it. And no, it’s impossible to have received this DM if you didn’t connect to the relay. If you never added it to your relays, your outbox-enabled client found it without your permission - blame them.
The DM is simply a way to adjust that setting from directly within your nostr client. Our entire goal of building Creatr the way we did is that so you can interact with it completely within the nostr client of your choice, without ever having to use our web client. Since it’s caused some ridiculous misunderstandings, we’ve removed that onboarding DM.
The message is quite clear but nobody actually reads the entirety of the message. Same is true of our payment reminders for nostr.wine. They say explicitly that they are for filter.nostr.wine.
There is plenty to improve and we are working on it. We also have Cellar (pay per post) and Inbox (subscription) so we are going to need to simplify our pricing at some point or offer a bundle. This is still the beginning :)

Put children together of the same age, the girls will all compete to be the same, the boys will all compete for who is the most adult. If half the girls are raised by whores, all the girls will try to dress like whores. If one boy is neglected by his parents and he has to grow up fast, and is a rebellious troublemaker, all the boys will compete to be like him. The school system is designed to turn out broken people, by intention.
Children are stupid. How does putting them together by age improve the outcome of education? As an adult, do you normally interact only with people your same age?

You may get along fine with classical conversations. Its very diverse. You may be fortunate and the mix of people in your area may turn out to be perfect. We can't play along with the church scene because of our biblical beliefs.
It seems STEM programs for elementry is the new NASA. Its designed to get them to focus on meaningless trivia and dream of unrealistic goals while they are surrounded with no people that can provide useful direction. Sure there will be 1 or 2% that might end up in that career path, but any curriculum for children that can even attempt to scratch the depth of necessary skills to do anything meaningful has to be dumbed down to the average kid which even the average adult isn't qualified to do even the most basic task. The only positive outcome is parents bragging and exaggerating about their kids doing things they have no understanding of.

Yes, we currently use Ron Paul, been using it for years, but it doesen't work for most of our kids. Hi! Our pricing model is a bit confusing and we are planning on overhauling the onboarding process soon.
Here’s how it works:
nostr.wine is a high performance “normal” paid relay. It is free to read, and 18,888 sats (one time fee) to have write access.
filter.nostr.wine is our subscription product. It is a separate powerful free relay aggregator that provides a relay-side global filter (your follows+their follows) as well as unfiltered replies to notes (for discovery of users outside your network). With the 18,888 admission fee to nostr.wine, you get 1 included (free) month of filter.nostr.wine.
Additional months for filter.nostr.wine can be purchased here: https://nostr.wine/add-time%E2%80%A8%E2%80%A8There are large discounts for buying more months at one time. The normal price is 10,000 sats/month, the biggest discount gets that down to 5,000 sats/month (~$3). Let me know if you have other questions!
Do you know of an article that describes the concern you and @nprofile…ej4c have about nostr's lack of decentralization and what other systems to compare it with that meet the standard you are applying to consider it sufficiently decentralized?

I wanted to clarify how filter works because there has been some misinformation.
By default we use your WoT (follows+follows) to filter the global feed our subscribers see when they connect to filter.nostr.wine. We do NOT filter replies to notes by WoT so that users outside of your network can be discovered. This can allow in unwanted spam too.
This new solution will not change that design but instead improve upon it.

Started working on our new spam protection for 🍷 filter.nostr.wine this week. Our repeat message filters and rate limiting helps but still leaks a lot.
We expect the new solution to be much more effective AND create less false positives. More details soon!

Electronics are replaceable, just like an ECU. Someone will make a new VFD controller and bypass all of the security controls when it becomes a problem. There are hot-rod guys that have these EVs torn down and know them inside out.
Sounds like you have a government problem, not an EV problem. You gotta fix that shit. Hopefully The Nostr and Bitcoin can help
You're jealous because Tesla can mass produce a car that can blow the doors off any ICE you can customize. That's what this is really about, isn't it?
How is it worse when they turn off your EV without your permission than when they turn off your ICE without your permission? Obviously you have never been late on child support payments. You have more to be concerned about than just a fucking remote switch in your car.
Yes, lithium batteries are a far more lithium rich ore than where they mine it from the ground. The only way the government gets involved is when they issue a loicense to perform the recycling.
Graphite is what you use to put out a lithiun metal fire. I don't know what else they add to it to keep it from igniting, maybe water?
The amount of energy that goes into making ethanol far exceeds the amount of energy you can extract just by burning the entire plant. Electricity produced at reasonable scales extracts 1/2 of the energy from combustion. The waste heat is often used for heating either municipalities or industrial chemical processes. Thermodynamically, you do not get better efficiency than 50%. Once its converted to electeicity, the energy is delivered to your battery at nearly 100% (yes i know its less, but for argument's sake it might as well be). Lithium ion batteries, a true modern miracle, have very very low energy loss during charging, storage and discharge.
With alcohol, if you were 1% efficient you'd be lucky; this if you include solar energy conversion to plant sugars, chemical spraying, harvesting, drying, mashing, distilling and delivery.

The real wisdom in getting married at a younger age that no one ever speaks about IMO is that...
When you get married at a younger age, you're naively oblivious to how much work actually goes into having a successful one of these things.
And by the time you figure that out, you're already neck deep in, so you do what needs getting done to make sure it all works out in the end for everyone involved.
Well, you hope that's how it works out. it didn't work out that way for me. But it still does in many cases for others.
Pat yourself on the back if this applies to you. Well done.
And to others (like myself) we have a better sense of what we need/want in our next partner. Something we rarely have a good grasp on as younger adults.

In a basement in Austria, there lived a black metal band. It was not a black metal band filled with satanic themes and a low recording quality, nor was it a Norwegian band that stabbed people or burned churches in it's spare time.
It was Summoning
And that means Tolkien inspired lyrics, majestic atmospheric soundscapes, and a much needed change of pace for black metal.
https://youtu.be/Vb1-yX3WhnA
Welcome to Metal Transmitted by Relays. This month we're featuring metal bands influenced by Tolkien.
And the time has come to dive into Black Metal, but don't be scared, it's not really as black as you've been led to believe, a fact I largely credit to Summoning.
They borrowed the foundation of their sound from the Black Metal subgenre but rather than focusing on anger, despair, or anti religion themes, they wrote songs about Middle Earth.
https://youtu.be/JvzY5aQDe70
They also recorded the first metal song written entirely in the Black Speech of Mordor.
https://youtu.be/phjb-PLK6DI
Their career has spanned over eight albums in which they've established a deep Tolkien nerd credibility far beyond any other band I've ever come across. They also pioneered the atmospheric black metal scene in inspiring several other bands to contribute to their particular style of black metal.
But if you're a fan of the classic black metal sound, they have an album for that too.

I too prefer to eat them as they ripen, and not have a full time job of canning. And major cool points for growing your own tobacco.
It's the time of the season to wind down the garden around here, and as usual, I'm excited, but not with the typical relief/panic that i usually experience. The setup this year was about 1/4 the normal size and reduced to only wicking tubs. It's been such little work, that it's tempting to migrate everything to that growing method eventually.
To make life even simpler, I opted for a mostly eat-fresh yield. I've lived most of the spring & summer months off of salad, cucumbers, melons, and local beef. I know I'll regret this choice, come February, but its been a much needed break. The last few years have been overwhelming. The closest thing to preservation i need to deal with, is drying some beans & herbs, and curing tobacco.
On that note, second year of tobacco went much smoother than the first. No weird viruses. No bolting. Just a couple plants instead of a dozen... I've never done anything with it, but from loose reading & eyeballing, I think there's enough to roll at least a few small cigars to give out for the holidays.
...and I have 1 pumpkin, perfect for a pie. 😊

New debate: Blue Origin is better than SpaceX
Hey, I'm not forcing you to do anything. I'm just pointing out you are following the crowd
Your beef is with all auto manufacturers. Why are you using this as an argument against EVs?
Batteries aren't consumable. You could say the same of the xenon in the headlights. The decentralized nature of fuel is the liberating aspect of EVs.
That many 9's implies there is only 1/100th of a person that can maintain the car. You are throwing up a new-part supply-chain problem. Yet another red herring, a pathetic argument. Firstly, there are indeed third party suppliers of parts for EVs, you don't need to only replace parts with OEM. Secondly, my original point is EVs don't need nearly as much drivetrain maintenance as an ICE vehicle. The drivetrain is about 20x or more reliable and less maintenance than ICE. Thirdly, the main parts would need to maintain on an EV are readily available from parts stores and from many suppliers, and the dope that can't fucking change brakes on their car can still find any mechanic to do it for them because its the exact same interchangeable parts as all other vehiclea on the road. Lastly, there are plenty stupid brars out there that drag race their EVs and get them tangled around a telephone pole. This means there are plenty perfectly good parts available in the junk yard. Just because you don't understand something doesen't mean its something to be afraid of.
For #nostr #developers how do you decide which relay URL to use? I have a system that transmits notes to multiple relays, but for things like reposts (NIP-18) struggling to decide how to determine which relay URL to use for that.
Obviously choosing an unreliable relay or a relay that eventually goes offline isn't a good practice. And it doesn't look like there is a way to define multiple relay URLs.
What do you all do for this?
Good. That's not my point. You can't fuel your gasoline engine with lumps of coal, and you can't fill your tank with natural gas. You can burn those things and make electricity.
Love the coloring on this. Nice one!
If anyone forces you, i'll stand next to you to and them to fuck off

The bitcoin on the books already doesn’t match the on chain data. Settlement all happens in cash which can paper over the lack of bitcoin.
Everyone doubts it’s happening but everyone doubted FTX was insolvent as well.
The only solution is for people to store their coins in cold storage to make the data obvious to even the biggest excusers.
Check the block chain. There’s no proper coin movement. Read the prospectus, there’s intentionally up to between 2-30 days before settlement is required. Coinbase is both custodian as well as tasked with acquiring the bitcoin. We don’t stop or fix it, the only thing stopping this train is a Coinbase blow up.
This is a simple problem to solve. Eventually they will figure out how tonpack graphite around the cells so if there is an accident, the graphite will stifle the metal fire
Wtf dude. I'm not against fire. Burn anything you want to make electricity. Fuck your CO2 objections, I'm not even participating in that commie debate
Agreed. I'm trying to disabuse the anti EV fud because I'm for freedom and independence foremost and its frustrating to watch people paint themselves into a corner in reaction to authoritarians. The reality is EVs are a decentralizing force, and oil dependence is a centralizing one.
Yes. If your engine breaks, some people replace the entire drivetrain. If you can find a replacement. IF! You are in cognitive dissonance. I'm not going to get through to you.
You think they can't shut down your modern gasoline car? If you can go to the trouble of converting your car to a gasifier, you can figure out how to install solar panels to charge your EV. You can also smash the cellular modem chip in your entertainment unit and they can't find your car. Why do I even need to explain this?
EVs are not "more complex". Do you realize your gasoline engine cost billions and took a half decade to design? Putting a bunch of laptop batteries under your floorboards isn't exactly the hardest concept to understand. The induction motor has been driving every industry, nearly every appliance in your home has one, keeping people alive in hospitals and schools with chillers and air handlers, keeping half the cities in the US from turning back into swampland for an entire century. The induction motor isn't more complex than a modern gasoline engine.
Oh what about all the electronics?
Would your gasoline engine work if it didn't have electronics? Injection drivers, flywheel induction pickups, knock sensors, richness feedback loops, spark plug coil packs, OBD self-diagnosis and reporting... none of this shit is necessary with electric.
The EV electric drive unit is a regenerative VFD connected to a gas pedal. These have been around in one form or another for 40 years. Its not that fucking complicated, not even a little.
Be my guest. Reject it because of a temporary limitation. But be aware, the high speed DC chargers are getting faster every year. Do you think a change in usage patterns of an 80 year-old electric grid will support a 10x or 100x increase in demand? I hope not, but even if they have a 2x demand shows the ability of the grid to adapt is already a miracle of engenuity. Don't point to things you don't understand not working perfectly during a massive increase in demand as proof that EVs are a bad idea. Don't say "they can disconnect you from the grid". Ok, can they shut down your solar panels? Can you drive next door and buy electricity from your neighbor? Does your neighbor also have an oil well and a refinery in their garage?
I'm fed up with the collective retardation among supposed well-informed and open minded people. You fall for the same psyop as everyone else: EVs bad 'cause autistic South-Afrika man bad 'n Merika! EVs are far more reliable, far less maintenance, and far less cost-per-mile than anything else. Don't tell me "lektricity is gunna be x-pentive kaus evywon is gonna ude it en deir kard". Give me a fuckin break. The only examples of failing electrical grids in the US are California. They also are at risk of an outbreak of the plague because they've turned half the state into an outdoor insane asylum and expect families to tolerate every kind of pervert to parade their glitter-dipped wang in the faces of their kindergarteners. The grid is failing because of regulation and price controls. What do you get when you have price controls? A well-connected single supplier, shortages and higher prices EVERY SINGLE TIME. The cost of electricity in California is only limited by the cost of individuals producing their own. Can you see what's coming next for them? Sunlight-tax.
I'm fine if you look at the EV critically, but not with an opinion you've been assigned because of some controlles opposition you think is in your tribe. The arguments against are obsolete. You are talking about EVs from 5 years ago. The free market and the ability of mankind to drive down prices and improve performance has not ever stopped. Don't act like it isn't there.

Lithium batteries can be recycled much more economically than the garbage you are sorting and paying extra to have hauled away and dumped into the Pacific
They can fuck themselves in the ass with the sears tower.
Only people that don't own an EV complain about the battery. My battery will go 1,000,000 miles and I never worry about it. I drive through blizzards, -40 temperatures, no problem. Yes, you get less range, but really how often do you need to do that? Also, every complaint is bitching about temporary problems and old tech. The 400mi battery solves all of it, they have been churning those out for years amd they are only going to get better. I love driving around for 1/5 the cost of the gas car. I could give a fuck less about CO2 or "dirty production" of batteries. You all are parroting the wail of the farrier.
You fuks that hate on EVs are no bitcoiners.
Electricity can be made from any energy source.
Does heating oil or deisel fuel flow to your house through a breaker panel?
Can you generate your own gasoline with just a solar panel?
Nevermind global warming, that is a red herring.
Ford and Edison understood electricity will free mankind from centralized global energy cartels.
Anything you need to mine from the ground will be controlled by the government in the name of the environment, and only the crony crapitalists are given a patent over the resources under your feet.
Electricity is the way.
Oil doesen't flow out of nuclear power plants.
Electricity will be nearly free.
Communication will be nearly free.
Bitcoin is here to stay.

If you don't like bitcoin content, follow people that don't like bitcoin. They exist on nostr the same as everywhere else, its just you may not like them because they resemble people that don't like bitcoin.
They call cashu and fedi ecash "shitcoins". This is the babbling of a shit for brains.
I don't know. The space witch lesbians one. I've purged the entire series from my memory.
By the way, I learned the hard way, almost all bottled water is reverse osmosis. They do this to remove bacteria so it doesen't get skunky.
And get this: "spring water" is also typically also reverse osmosis and treated with ozone (made into low concentration hydrogen peroxide). If its called "mineral water" they add minerals back in after all this.
AND! its bottled in PET or HDPE which leeches microplastics and other zenoestrogenic and endocrine disrupting plasticisers.
So: you can't drink tap water, you cant drink bottled water, you can't drink RO water,.. WHERE TF DO YOU FIND WATER?
Ideally, get water directly from a deep aquafer or natural spring that has about 15 grains of calcium carbonate is free of heavy metals, arsenic and other poisons. Haul it if you need to. Buy a few 5 gallon glass carboys and a pottery, glass or steel dispenser.
If this is out of the question, install a RO system and remineralize the water yourself. This is called "adding brewing salts" and "adjusting your water" for beer brewing.
A third option, possibly the most expensive and produces safe but not necessarily ideal water (in my opinion,) yet is a good preparedness item, is a Berke with an activated charcoal stage and put tap water or low quality well or spring water through it.

Pure water will kill you. You NEED specific minerals dissolved in your water. That link @nprofile…hcpn posted a while back with the woo-woo "sailine" guy is closer to the truth than you might assume. Look up "The Water Book" for homebrewers written about a decade ago if you want to understand what "good" water actually is made of.
Don't watch any of them. The latest film retroactively ruined all of them.
Before we are saved, yes. After we are saved through Christ, we can strive to perfection.
The potato chips I'm refering to are made in avocado oil
If i could make a short list of ubiquitous stuff I don't want my kids eating it would be this, and in this order:
1) Soy and flax anything
2) Artificial sweeteners, preservatives, flavorings, colorings & fortifications (e.g. enriched wheat)
3) Yellow prussiate of soda, anti-fungals and anti-yeasts (such as magnesium sulfate)
4) Oils high in alpha-lineolenic acid (but I repeat myself)
5) Any plant exposed to weed-killer (glyphysate)
6) Fluoridated or reverse-osmosis water
7) Hydrogenated oils
8) Shellfish, mussels, eels, pork and rodents (squirrel, raccoon, etx)
9) Wheat with bran and/or germ (whole wheat)
Yes, I know, you didn't ask
I think all we need to know is that he is our Father and he loves us more than we can fathom
Fun fact: over the past few months, I realized my chronic migranes go away when I avoid carbs. I'm already largely seed-oil free, but just one handful of potatochips (I used to daily indulge in much worse) is enough to trigger a headache. Is this proof positive you are wrong and I'm right? By no means, only that keto has given me a way to manage my diet in a sustainable way while other diets do not.
I appreciate you provide an alternative view, and its one that I may have mistakenly interepreted as a variation on the historical mainstream view of inflamitory oils and phytonutrients. My point may reflect the direction the wind is currently flowing on this tooic, but to me it too is descenting from the mainstream and thereby I regard past research on the voodoo branch of science we know as nutrician the same as I regard the Trinity: A self-reinforcing delusion based on circular logic. Regardless, I appreciate you expanding my horizons with the aspect that the polar opposite may be equally likely.
Lets not get into wacky Jewish Talmudic doctrines. Its not a question of whether our Father, God the creator, has two or three heads. Its all ridiculous on its face. What is important is whether we have access to God, through Jesus Christ through faith that Christ is our Lord.
I primarily provide my analysis as evidence that my profession of faith isn't arbitrary or unfounded. I come from a heritage of trinitarianism and would never have dared believe anything different. It wasn't until I prayed to know the truth that it was revealed to me, and for this I am grateful, and I've found through this and other elucidations of scripture that a fuller, stronger and less confounding believing is possible.
Be ye perfect as your Father in heaven is perfect.
I did not intentionally leave out anything. I left nothing to to be misunderstood. I certainly didn't delete the verse from the Bible. "The word was made flesh" is plainly clear with the clarification of the previous verses. If you can't see it for yourself, its not up to me to illuminate it further.
If you go so far as to accuse me of being dishonest, I'm happy to shake the dust off of my feet and move on.
I didn't want to get into that 8 days ago because reality is quite a radical departure from the mainstream Christian understanding. If God sent us, and we are God's sons, then we are gods. There is only one creator, there is only one father, there is only one begotten Son, and there is only one spirit of God within us, but as son's of God, we too are gods along with our Lord Jesus Christ.
This is not my experience. Today, food is the primary cause of inflammation, illness is the second. Chronic inflammation leads to allergies and disease including every leading cause of death: heart disease, cancer and brain deterioration. Yes, inflammatory response is necessary for health, but to say we need unhealthy foods to aid inflammation is quite a stretch.

Clients need to implement relay controls to allow for users to manipulate where they write and where they read independently, as well as which relay they’re actively displaying in their feed.
Instead of clients just blasting notes everywhere and downloading every note from every relay, users should have granular control.
This also impacts how much of a bandwidth hog clients are, or data storage(cache) issues and crashes.
All of these “just do this thing” solutions don’t actually help nostr, they centralize and wall it off.
Even cooler would be multi custodian multisig rather than multisig at multiple custodians

If I said that the Apostles creed fully communicates my faith, but a portion of the nicean creed does not, the the remainder does, how does this give you the knowledge that I am or am not saved?
1 Cor 12:3 KJV Wherefore I give you to understand, that no man speaking by the Spirit of God calleth Jesus accursed: and that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost.
Joh 7:38 KJV He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.
Mat 16:15-17 KJV He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am? And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God. And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Bar–jona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven.

The Tale of the Wayward Soul
Hark, my child, let wisdom be thy guide,
Hold firm my words, let them not slip aside.
Guard thou my counsel, as thou dost thy breath,
For these shall keep thee from an early death.
To wisdom say, "Thou art my kin,"
And to proven counsel, let thy heart be pinned.
They shield thee from temptation's snare,
From yearning cries that call for mother’s care.
Once, by my window’s frame I stood,
Where twilight blended with the wood.
A man did wander, slow of pace,
Through Simple Street, unmarked of grace.
He drifted as the restless breeze,
Unknowing, bound for miseries.
Soon met he her—of painted guise,
A glance that stirred and sealed his ties.
Her lips, they curled in whispered sin,
And thus, she drew the young man in.
Her voice was soft, like siren’s song,
And beckoned where no soul belongs.
"I’ve longed for thee, my bed is turned,
Come rest ‘til dawn, 'til birds have churned.
My husband’s gone, sent far away.
Come, fill your heart upon my clay."
She reached for him with gentle hand,
And led him to a broken land.
Like ox to slaughter, so he came,
Unknowing, heart wrapped in the flame.
Her house, a road to endless woe,
For many, wide-eyed, there did go.
What seemed so sweet bore bitter end,
A place where souls no more ascend.
So listen, child, and mark my plea:
Let wisdom guide thine eyes to see.
Keep thy feet from the snare-bound tree,
Lest thou be lost, and cease to be.
I likewise believe the same of my understanding of scripture. Where I take issue is the ostracising and demonizing behavior of whose who would willingly move to a jungle and pay witness to a tribe of cannibals, but refuse to acknowledge someone among their own people who worship the same God (yes it is the same God) and who wish to respect their beliefs and engage in dialog on the subject only when prompted to.

The Tale of the Wayward Soul
My child, let wisdom be your guide,
Hold fast my words, letn't them slip aside.
Guard my lesson, as you guard your breath,
They will keep your soul from an early death.
Say to wisdom, “You are my kin,”
"Of proven advice, my heart be pinned."
They protect you from temptation’s snare,
From yearn that calls for mother's care.
Once I stood by window’s frame,
Looking out where night became.
A man walked slow, through Simple Street,
Un'ware of danger's path he beat.
He slid like a breeze, with no firm pace,
And soon he met her—a painted face.
With glance and a grin, she drew him in,
Clothed in whisper's promised sin.
Her voice cooed soft, with meaning deep,
Like a dream that pulls you to sleep.
“I’ve wanted you, my bed is turned,
Come, let us rustle 'til song of birds..
My husband’s gone; he’s far away,
Let’s fill our hearts upon the clay.”
She beckoned him with gentle hand,
And he followed her to trodden land.
Like a foul that finds a snare,
His heart was trapped, tho unaware.
Lead like an ox to butcher's door,
He knew not where his steps were tow'r.
Her house, a highway paved with regret,
Those who entered 'fore will not forget.
It seemed a sweet, but end was grim,
Many slain, wide eyed, like him.
So listen, child, do hear my plea:
Let wisdom guide your eyes to be.
Keep your feet far from that ground,
For this path will lead you down.

As a Christian, it's troubling that a single point of doctrinal disagreement, such as the deity of Christ, can lead to exclusion from participation in a group that shares the same foundational scriptures. Despite basing my beliefs on the same Bible, I'm often met with irrational reactions, cognitive dissonance, and even demonization, simply for expressing a differing interpretation. This rigid need for uniformity not only causes division but also undermines fellowship, despite the shared core of our faith. Why is it that one doctrinal difference can outweigh the greater unity we should have as followers of Christ? #biblestr

It was rare to see an American flag. If I recall correctly, even Perkins was starting to neglect their giant flags. The greatness of America was beginning to be questioned by the average Joe. We were suffering in a recession from the Yahoo dot-com bust. Inflation was about to hit hard from widespread bankruptcies. It was common to hear people discuss the Keynsian perspective that only a war can bring us back to prosperity.
Then, we wake up one day, and sim-sala-bim everyone is a Patriot!

No problem! It’s your special day I hope you enjoy it!
I’ll tell you one more thing though, holy shit it can be stressful. There are unlimited choices and options. It’s so fucking overwhelming. I don’t want to make assumptions about your perfect day, but for me- less was more. We didn’t need much of anything in the end, some family, a nice location, some decent clothes, some nice words to say, a good restaurant to enjoy some food after, and a nice place to spend the night together.
Less was perfect and more was stressful.
Recently married here- I don’t have any wishes for any change, ours came out perfect. The secret was to listen to our gut, communicate, and be flexible overall.
Biggest headaches- food, venue, guests, costs.
We went through a lot of iterations of what we wanted. Everyone is going to have different wants, and so communication with your fiance and prioritizing your collective wants will be important.
As we went through the process, we had to compromise based on various factors, our highest priority demanded compromise on other priorities. So that lead us down the path, and we wound up going where we tried to minimize compromising on other priorities in light of that.
So communicate your goals and priorities, walk the path in light of those priorities, and you’ll find your perfect wedding at the end of that pathway. :-)

George Washington was a fraud. He would have been nothing if not for his four inhertiances, his black taylor, and his silver tongue. The man lead his men onto defeat, one battle after another. He swindeled the surviving soldiers of their promised lands, conspired with Adams, Jefferson and Franklin in a coup against the confederation's continental congress, and inherited again the newly centralized government's most powerful position.
Don't even get me started on Franklin.

got it. Still, the markets are controlled by information. Whoever controls the information, controls the outcome.
There are two outcomes: either they will fake the polls to a neck-to-neck tie which reaffirms that we can trust no polls or media, or they will allow him to win by a mile; and this tells us the media is colluding with Trump.
The United States was founded to preserve freedom through life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. The Constitution of 1788 created a more centralized federation, granting Congress limited but extensive powers—mainly over borders and resolving disputes between states—while leaving domestic matters to the states. Citizens could freely move between states in search of opportunity or to escape persecution, aligning with the biblical principle that "where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty" (2 Corinthians 3:17).
However, over time, particularly as Marxist and Nietzschean philosophy took root, and Darwin's theories led to eugenics and a rejection of ancient wisdom, the country shifted its focus. The abolition of slavery, inherited from England and propelled by a free banking system and fractional reserves, redefined the moral compass. With money becoming elastic, the idea of enslavement for debts became immoral, as the courts could forgive debts at the expense of the general populace. This echoed the biblical warning that "the borrower is slave to the lender" (Proverbs 22:7).
Driven by this new gospel of egalitarianism, there was a push to spread abolition and equality across continents. In the process, the central government grew into an uncontrollable leviathan, seizing power over money through central banking. The pursuit of human ideals without regard for God’s principles of justice and freedom led to a government that no longer reflects the federation’s original intent, becoming instead a power unto itself, as warned in 1 Samuel 8:11-18, when the people desired a king over them.

Credit agencies use your SSN to identify you. The banks use your SSN to identify you. The IRS uses your SSN to identify you. The medical system uses your SSN to identify you. Countless other agencies use your SSN to identify you. This isn't so much a problem except that they also use it as an authentication token which is ridiculous.
To authenticate yourself over the phone, all you need to recite is:
* Name
* DOB
* SSN
* Address
* Mother's maiden name
None of this is private. From a privacy perspective, to think this is secure information is ridiculous on its face. Identity fraud is only limited by a criminal's risk tolerance and various companys' fraud prevention measures.

Yea. I think this just comes down to the complexity of how trust is developed in the first place. Trust is also not something that can be determined in a very short timeframe but requires independent circumstances so that those can be compared. Needs to be some amount of convergence where multiple channels point toward trust from different directions.
Not something typically handled by verbal "propositions", at least not exclusively.

### NOSTR Improvement Possibility (NIP): NPUB to Chaumian Ecash Token Anchoring for Identity Establishment
**NIP Number**: TBD
**NIP Title**: NPUB to Chaumian Ecash Token Anchoring for Identity and Web of Trust Support
**Author**: Brunswick @nprofile…mfwq
**Date**: 9/6/2024 blockheight 860202
**Status**: Draft r3
**Discussion**: "Proof of Bitcoin" #nevent1q…p7vl
---
#### **Abstract**
This NIP introduces a method to anchor a NOSTR Public Key (NPUB) to a Chaumian ecash Cashu token that is P2PK-locked to the NPUB, offering a decentralized and anonymous way to establish credibility on the NOSTR network. This method supplements the Web of Trust system, providing new users with an immediate credibility mechanism while they build their network. The proposal removes the need for additional message types, simplifying the process by allowing users to post or reference the token on their profile or through NOSTR notes.
---
#### **Motivation**
NOSTR currently lacks a clear and decentralized method for new users to establish credibility without relying on centralized services or domain-based verification. This creates a barrier for new users who do not have connections within a Web of Trust. While the Web of Trust remains a reliable long-term solution, new users need a bootstrap mechanism for credibility.
By using a Chaumian ecash Cashu token that is P2PK-locked to the NPUB, users can establish verifiable credibility without relying on a Bitcoin on-chain transaction. This proposal also simplifies the validation process, as the age and validity of the token can be checked against the Cashu mint.
---
#### **Use of Chaumian Ecash Cashu Tokens**
In this updated system:
- **Chaumian ecash Cashu tokens** are used to anchor NPUBs.
- Each token is **P2PK-locked** (Pay-to-Public-Key) to the user's NPUB.
- The token serves as proof of credibility, with its **age** verifiable through the Cashu mint.
- Users can post the token directly in their profile or reference a NOSTR note (kind 1) containing the token.
No additional message types are required, as the token itself carries all necessary information for validation.
---
#### **Integration with Web of Trust**
This token-based system serves as a **supplement** to the Web of Trust. While long-term credibility will be determined by the Web of Trust score, the token provides new users with an immediate credibility anchor until their Web of Trust connections are established.
- **Token Age as Credibility**: The credibility of the token is tied to its age, which can be validated against the Cashu mint.
- **Temporary Use**: Once users have established themselves within the Web of Trust, they may no longer need to rely on the token.
- **Flexible Trust System**: Clients and relays can prioritize posts based on Web of Trust scores or token credibility, reducing spam and bot interactions.
---
#### **Specification**
1. **Token Format**:
- A Chaumian ecash Cashu token that is P2PK-locked to the NPUB of the user.
- The token must be **posted** directly in the user’s profile or referenced in a NOSTR note (kind 1).
2. **Relay and Client Support**:
- Relays should handle tokens like other NOSTR metadata, enabling verification of the token's validity and age.
- Clients must support the ability to validate the token against the Cashu mint and factor it into the trust mechanism.
3. **Validation**:
- The token’s **age** can be verified by checking the Cashu mint for the duration it has been held above a set threshold (such as 100,000 SATs, or equivalent).
- Tokens that fall below the threshold or are revoked will reset the credibility score.
---
#### **Rationale**
This NIP provides a **lightweight, decentralized** method for new users to gain credibility on NOSTR without requiring on-chain Bitcoin transactions. The use of Chaumian ecash Cashu tokens is economical and maintains the privacy of users. It allows for easy validation and a straightforward process for establishing temporary credibility until Web of Trust connections are built.
This change eliminates the scalability concerns raised with the original proposal that relied on Bitcoin's on-chain UTXO limits, and it simplifies the process for clients and relays to implement.
---
#### **Backwards Compatibility**
This NIP remains fully compatible with existing standards such as NIP-05 and the Web of Trust. It acts as a **supplementary** method to provide a temporary credibility anchor and does not interfere with other identity systems.
---
#### **Security Considerations**
- **Token Security**: Users must ensure the security of their Chaumian ecash tokens. A compromised token could allow unauthorized individuals to claim credibility.
- **Mint Validation**: The Cashu mint should be trusted to provide reliable data for token age and validation, and its decentralization will impact the security model.
- **Spam Mitigation**: The use of tokens helps mitigate spam, but their value threshold must be set high enough to prevent abuse while remaining economical for users.
---

What if I know I shouldn’t be trusted in certain ways. Is it even possible to communicate that to someone?
What is C? Carrots? How do you wind up ten carrots that you don't have?
I disagree partially. The bitcoin protocol does not need to change to continue to function. The software only needs to implement the protocol, and yes software typically needs to support changes to associated libraries, operating systems and hardware. There also is no need to keep bitcoin limited to one implementation as long as its compatible with the underlying protocol. The only need to change the protocol comes when there is widespread demand to scale differently than presently it is capable such as taproot. If there is a "breaking.change" to the protocol, this is a fork and is evident by the behavior of the markets and the network.
It seems that a person cannot legitimately make claims about their own trustworthiness because the act of telling someone something presumes trustworthiness.

I think I just had another idea that could be simpler. Ill think it over and make a different NIP. Thanks for the inspiration!
This is true, it doesent presently have a straightford path for non-technical and non-bitcoiners. However, it could be incentive to modify an existing wallet to simplify this signing procedure. For example, the nostr client could offer a QR with instructions to the signing device and the signing device can return an animated QR with the signature.
I agree with you, the government is no moral right to rule over you; even if the majority agree to form a representative government. No matter how a government is formed, it only exists as long as the majority continue to believe it is legitimate. However, the utopic vision of anarcho-capitalist ostracism, DROs and defense insurance providers also requires the majority concede to the immorality of government by force of the majority.

since the food stamps are debit cards, they get the card, buy groceries and then pay up the total to the card owner when they return the card. and also get no tax on checked since food assistance is tax free.

Saturday evening means it's time for Metal Transmitted by Relays.
For the remainder of September, we're going to look at some instances where Metal has intersected with ... Tolkien.
Starting with the power metal band Blind Guardian
https://youtu.be/y6Pq5H0odaI
Blind Guardian is a German band that has been cranking out power metal for many years now, but we're going to focus on their 1998 album "Nightfall in Middle Earth."

It is a concept album based on J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Silmarillion", and tells the story of the Noldor elves in the First Age and their sorrowful war against Morgoth to regain the stolen Silmarils.

This city is emblematic of a failed monetary policy regime that plagues most blue jurisdictions in the U.S.
It's not their credit card, so they have no qualms making up celebrations and spending our money on stuff that 90% of the taxpayers couldn't give 2 f@cks about.
But I won't get started.
While I do still have a home there, my primary address changed last year. All they get (for now) is my property taxes. And I'm working on plugging that leak from p&l.
See what you did Beaver. Got me on one of those rants dang it.
There is a park in Center City #Philadelphia called #LovePark. And in this park they would add coloring to the water fountain on some months celebrating different things.

Hey, Cali Mike, this was 8 years ago. I ran a half marathon 10 months later and a full marathon (not my best time) 11 months after the wreck.
And was back on my new bike within a year.
So 98% recovered.
As for the remaining 2% I've been treated by the best surgeons and physical therapist. It's not likely I'll ever be 100% on that front.
But, the pain and suffering paid off two mortgages and bought me a strip mall which was later sold for some orange thing you all are always talking about. Lol.

It was my brother's. He blew the zipper out, and Eberlestock sent him a replacement. I ended up with the old pack and cut off everything but the back panel which contains a rigid plastic frame.
I then got some strapping and buckles from Amazon and made the front panel from leather, and attached the straps to fit the existing loops on the pack.

#Dogstr #2 the female Corso has 2 names. Most people IRL think her name is Wiggles. But it's not. That's the word I use when I'm speaking about her and not too her.
When I need her to focus, there is a secret name (command).
She is the first dog that I've done this with. I also began doing the same with #3. But due to current circumstances, it's likely not going to stick with #3, the way that it has with #2.
I decided after my last dog (Flako) that my next dog and I should speak our own language that makes no sense to other people. sometimes when in public spaces, I had to whisper commands to him, which can draw unnecessary attention. Not a fan of attention 90% of the time.
A dogs name is a command. The more people that can command your dog, the more chances there are for misbehavior and miscommunications.
This note was inspired by my mom's neighbor. Cool dude and dogstr has accepted him into the fold. But he asked this morning if she had hearing problems, bc sometimes Wiggles doesn't respond to Wiggles. 👀 My response...she is probably just tired. I felt bad for about 10 seconds for lying to him.

"Evolution of dance" is a great classic 👌
Whether a country is an anarchy or a state isn't my point, its that someone will develop a protectorate, whether democratically agreed upon or not, and its better to have a formal mechanism than none at all for the people under this system to influence that institution. A kingdom is total tyrrany, this is the definiton of tyrrany, yet the populace defends the king and the monarchy in word, in heart and deed. A mob controlling a territory is not much more than an informal fiefdom. An anarchy does not guarantee the populace will be dominated by a tyrant, but absent a harmonious, homogenous and highly cohesive society, its highly likely.

**The Illusion of Sovereignty Without Government**
There's a growing narrative in some circles, particularly within the Sovereign Citizen Movement, that by renouncing U.S. citizenship and declaring oneself a “state citizen,” one can access hidden funds or evade certain legal obligations. These beliefs rest on the idea that using certain legalistic phrases will protect individuals from government overreach or entitle them to special privileges. This mindset seems to stem from a magical view of language—that somehow, the right words can shield someone from the coercive forces of the state.
In reality, the existence of a government is not solely to infringe upon individual freedoms but to reduce the amount of harm one must tolerate in everyday life. It’s a form of a protection racket, but with the crucial distinction that it offers certain freedoms and mechanisms—such as voting, free speech, and the ability to run for office—that give citizens some influence over the system. Even though government may be filled with nepotism, cronyism, and a power elite that largely serves its own interests, it still contains elements that restrain absolute chaos.
The presence of a government, flawed though it may be, is a bulwark against the full-fledged anarchy where no rule of law exists, only the law of the strongest. Absent government, organized crime and mob rule would likely fill the vacuum, where the only form of protection is through membership in a gang or syndicate. The theory behind centralizing authority, whether through government or other power structures, is that the larger the governing entity, the more stable life becomes because there’s less crime and unpredictability to endure.
The choice between government and no government is essentially a choice between *some* theft and *complete* theft. In a world with no government, the only limit to how much a mob can steal is how much they can take before the system collapses under its own weight. In a functioning democratic republic, however imperfect, the people theoretically have the ability to limit how much is taken from them, through checks, balances, and representation.
Thus, under a representative government, you endure a limited amount of coercion and theft. It’s far from perfect, but it’s a more stable and equitable alternative to the unlimited, unregulated theft that would result from the collapse of government altogether.

Maybe it will teach ostriches how to use relays…
FYI- check my relay list- I don’t see a single reply guy message.
Completely inappropriate. Evidence of the existence of a coordinated grooming operation.
Yes - that’s basically the only thing I can come up with too. But still not everyone will be invited or be willing to pay so it seems incomplete.
But if you filter replies by WoT, how will you ever discover new users outside of your graph?
It’s great for browsing global but seems harsh for replies.
Stack ‘em hard, frens! https://i.nostr.build/VybRmLXEP0tdBuG7.jpg
I think it’s going to be a challenge. I am actually fairly bullish on the network filtering side as part of the solution but unfortunately can’t use it for our aggregator. There are ways to circumvent it but it is easier to fingerprint connections than you might think, even with multiple IPs/ASNs.
I think relays will use social graphs based tools a lot but I’m not sure how to deal with new users. They will end up being very hard to discover if we apply strict rate limits/reduce their visibility until they gain followers/engagement.
We could encourage them to pay to “skip the early reputation line” but I don’t think PoW will prevent spammers. There needs to be a way to onboard without cost though. Perhaps some type of vouching from existing “reputable” users. Still can be gamed though. Lots to consider.
Hi! Happy to try to help you. I’m not sure exactly how the wallet selector works in Amethyst but maybe @npub1gcx…nj5z can help.
In terms of paying for the nostr.wine relay directly - you can also go to https://nostr.wine and make the payment there using whatever wallet is most convenient. You can also copy/paste the lightning invoice elsewhere as needed.

Kind of. There are specs and there are blog posts and there are also existing implementations to review - but there isn’t a one size fits all solution, its more of a concept.

I imagine it could be any wallet address, not necessarily one dedicated to a single uxto. Theoretically it could also be a lightning channel if you can find a way to sign a message with the private key.
Improving now. Seems to be getting pummeled by old events but mostly holding up. I’ll keep an eye on it.
Investigating increased latency on one of our US mirrors. It is still responding to notes just a bit slow (so may timeout with your client).
Yup, I’m sure we will get there. UI is very important here but also thinking about the relay side.
We need to prevent events/purge them, not just keep them from being seen otherwise spam becomes expensive to host eventually.
Well it depends. If you’re running the public relay that is being spammed, you can see what IP(s), ASNs, user agents, etc the spammer is using and rate limit on the network side.
If you’re an aggregator like filter.nostr.wine that doesn’t have that network view, then it’s MUCH more challenging. You need to focus more on the content/pattern of the messages and reputation of pubkey posting them.
Glad to hear that!
Primal uses their own proprietary cache to load most of their client so that makes sense.
Yes but it’s still all whack-a-mole. The best filtering is on the network level and for aggregators that don’t have access to the connection info it is challenging.
The only long term solution I can come up with is npub reputation where you face very strict rate limits initially.
Right - but it’s back to the same Fiatjaf experiment of months ago.
If the users didn’t rebroadcast it to large relays your reach would’ve been drastically impacted. Scaling via outbox requires the reach to happen without the rebroadcasting (so that all relays don’t end up storing all the same notes) so this feels like celebrating a fake win.
Its a valid discussion to have, because some of the best minds seem to be confused about the concept of agreements.
Hahahahah this is awesome #note1p53…vqw0
Excelentes palabras, pura claridad 💫
We usually tell people to use both since nostr.wine has regional mirrors and is faster, but notes do propagate to both so you can do that if you want.
There are benefits but they require performant clients (that don’t just connect to whatever relays they want) otherwise you won’t notice. If I run Damus or Amethyst and use only nostr.wine/filter.nostr.wine the speed is genuinely unreal compared to pulling the same notes from 10+ public relays.
Try this for a week and see how quick it is. After that check your battery use + data consumption. And all that is before you even use the built in (optional) WoT to browse global of 10+ large free relays (not all clients provide WoT out of the box).
This is a trademark issue, not a copyright issue. You're adding to the argument with more strawmen. Trademark is a law protecting impersonization, and I don't believe the validity of this law is part of this discussion.
This note is bothering me because the spreading around part is not the outbox model - it’s actually the opposite. It’s the “old school” broadcast model.
Outbox would be everyone reading it just from your relay, not rebroadcasting it all over the place…
So no problems? It gives you way more than nostr.wine, not sure why you think that. Have you read the readme? I get more than 75% of the notes I consume through filter exclusively, most users don’t pay for paid relays…
Ok, you are founding your argument that a thief has rights over stolen goods?
The definition of pirate is someone that stole something. Are you justified accepting stolen goods?
@nprofile…pyug why are my own posts being hidden from me? I also have no way of knowing that a post has been reported or why
#nevent1q…hskv
I never said social contract. Now you are engaging in creating a strawman argument
Yes, then you are engaging in fraud by saying you agree but you don't agree and won't abide by the agreement.
As an ancap, I believe the common ancap philosophy is wrong here. Contracts are central to all transactions. Most contracts are implicit, e.g. If you enter my store, you will not pocket things from the shelf and walk out without paying. I don't think the present system of copyright and patent law is not justified because it is redundant to individual contracts and makes litigation onerous. However the essence of protecting information with agreements is fully in harmony with the fundamental principals of free association and anarcho-capitalism.
If you’re looking for temporarily relief from ReplyGuy now is a great time to try https://filter.nostr.wine - keep your network view/reach without all the noise.
A few are still leaking through but our rate limits/repetitive message filters are keeping the majority out of sight. #note1u5f…xc0z
You are taking something by violating the agreement to not copy it.
Why would you agree to an exploitive contract? If you don't agree, then don't say you agree to the terms.
I believe for RIPE an alternative to being an LIR is to have one sponsor you. I believe IPXO, for example, does this for marketplace customers who want to move to owning address space.
Yes. Theft is breaking an agreement to not take other people's stuff. Otherwise its not an agreement, its a lie.
When you sell a thing, and part of that sale and sale price includes an agreement to not copy that thing, but you do anyway; this is theft.
Yes ARIN/RIPE have slightly different rules. I already went through the whole process and am on a waitlist for a /22 via ARIN.
Took only a week or so from start to finish but of course you need a justification and a business.
Doing our best! There are def some sneaking through (on filter only of course) but majority is being caught by rate limits/repetitive message rules.
The red herring is that nostr will never need to scale to 100% of the population with this NIP. We can rely on the eventual growth of technology to solve the problem when it actually becomes one. Let's not optimize early fellow engineers.
What kind of problems? I’ve been using exclusively filter to access any non nostr.wine relay for 2 years!
Para bloquear en Amethyst #nevent1q…anls
oh damn Peter you playing that??
Yes, replies are always unfiltered on filter.nostr.wine. Only the global feed uses your WoT so that you can see new users when they reply directly to you.
Our repetitive message filter/rate limits are catching a lot of them but it won’t be perfect. We err on the conservative side!
The minimum uxto size doesen't need to be 100k, that can change depending on the value of sats. To create 10 billion uxtos (peak population), assuming 135 bytes per uxto, thats a max of about 10000 uxtos per block, it would take 19 years for each individual to have a uxto.
Our plan was to subsidize nostr.wine with our other services (most notably filter.nostr.wine) and so far it has worked well. If some day this isn’t sustainable we’ll change it.
Yes! Because if you’re taking payments from users you (should) feel more obligated to keep it online/functional. You’re more likely to shut down a paid relay if you no longer have time/interest in dealing with it or if it’s costing you money.
People who choose to run free relays have a more set it and forget it mentality. It has tradeoffs but they tend to stick around longer because they aren’t as short term profit/break even motivated.
Back when we started 🍷 nostr.wine, I signed up to basically every paid relay that existed at the time (20+). I think only 3 of those still exist today. It’s easy to turn a relay on and collect payments but it takes effort and a plan to keep it running reliably for years.

Hos are drama. The reason guys that marry earlier have more kids is men think they should marry someone the same age. The psyop is men and women should be equal in marriage. No! Men should be calling the shots in marriage and that happens only when you aren't simping for your wife. Men should expect to marry when they are financially stable. That happens in their 30's. Women should start families in their 20's, the earlier the better. The less dickmiles the better for both of you. Don't have the illusion that your wife should be calling all the shots, and you need to make her happy. If she doesn't want to settle down and be a mother and wife, sorry dude, you married a whore. That might actually be one of your super powers. In a way I wish porn could do it for me too. But unfortunately it hasn't since I was probably in my early 20's. The fact that it's now available online anytime is a plus too. Back in the days when porn excited me, I had to hunt down magazines, usually in unethical ways. 👀
Have you gotten over the numbness of peace?
Me chatting football with relatives: "A football field is a common unit of measurement used by corporate media when explaining size to their audience, likely because it is comprised of masculine women who are familiar with football, and feminized men who will not admit they don't know the size of a football field and lack basic spatial cognition."
Do not judge based on outward appearance, but judge with fairness and justice in discerning the law.

Just to be clear: there are better ways of doing this but as far as I know they are not widely used (yet!)
- You can paginate the follow list request using since/until with timestamps
- Relays can support COUNT https://github.com/nostr-protocol/nips/blob/master/45.md
- Clients can outsource pagination/aggregation to DVMs https://www.data-vending-machines.org/kinds/5400/ #note1swd…tglu
I'm starting to suspect that one reason some Bitcoiners are bearish on nostr is because they are stuck in the mindset that distributed networks have to guarantee message delivery, message permanence, and thus form consensus around that.
They don't understand that nostr network fragmentation is actually flexibility.
For the nostr historians out there, I was wrong, it was 1.5y ago. Here is the original: #note1fzn…hfhl
Small typo: tried to add the “or 100 relays” part but didn’t update the upper end of range (500-50000) instead of 5000, but the non-unique argument is the same.
I assume you have received several good explanations by now, but in case you haven’t I wrote this almost 2 years ago:
How do we check “follower count” on nostr?
1. Your client sends a request to all your connected relays asking for contact lists that follow you
2. Relays answer back with the events requested
3. The client aggregates the event total, de-duplicates, and displays the count
Each relay has a set limit on how many stored events it will return per request. For some relays it’s 500, others 1000, some as high as 5000. Let’s say for simplicity that all your public relays you query use 500 as their limit. If you ask 10 relays for your followers the max possible answer you can get is 5000. In reality you won’t ever get 5000 unique responses, you’ll likely get something closer to the same 500 from each relays you query. That won’t change if you have 20,000 followers or 100,000 or if you query 100 relays instead of 10. You may get back a “different” 500-5000 each time, but you’ll still cap out at 5000 (non-unique) because that is the most events your client will receive.
Primal, nostr.band, and other aggregators that store counts in their own DB will always show different numbers than clients reading directly from relays. Generally speaking, neither number is correct! #note1rg3…yq75

Additionally, I didn't know she was on twitter. Shes always been active with her IG community, but never knew her to be on twitter. And she has a baby now too, how does she have time for tweets.
So, I asked her to prove it. And she sends me a screenshot of my profile and she's right, it was me.
I immediately went into a panic. Hopped on twitter and began scrolling through my entire timeline (over 10 years of stuff) to see if I've ever posted anything she might process as hurtful. I don't find anything.

Missed Opportunity: A Lunch Date in Florida
As I sit down to write this #Nostr note, I can't help but think about the missed opportunity that was my lunch date just a few hours ago. Florida the Sunshine State has its charms, but for someone like me who lives in Pennsylvania, it's not an ideal place to call home - at least, not permanently.
My mom moved to Florida from New York some 30 years ago and due to recent decline in her health, I've been staying with her to help manage her care. It's a taxing situation, but one that requires my presence. Amidst the chaos of caregiving, I had the opportunity to go on a lunch date with a woman I met through our shared love for Cane Corsos.
Our initial interactions were centered around our dogs and their playdates, which was all about the canines' wellbeing. It wasn't until this particular lunch date that we finally got a chance to focus solely on each other. No mom, no dog and no cell phones.
The conversation flowed easily, the venue was delightful, and the weather was perfect for a post-lunch walk on the beach, which we did. Oh and found a cool beach spot that I can bring the dogstr to in Deerfield Beach. 👍🏽
I digress....
So why did I feel like I had missed an opportunity? As I reflected on our conversation during my drive home, it dawned on me that I might have unintentionally given off the wrong impression. Here's how my thoughts went:
"I'm over 50 years old and live with my mom."
"I don't have a 'real' job - at least, not in the traditional sense."
"I can't wait to get back home (to Pennsylvania) and leave this place."
It's not that I'm ashamed of these facts; they simply aren't the most appealing aspects of myself. And while our conversation was engaging and enjoyable, I couldn't shake the feeling that my circumstances may have overshadowed any other potential connections.
As someone who values authenticity, I know that honesty is crucial in relationships - be it romantic or platonic. But sometimes, there's a fine line between being honest and oversharing. In this instance, I wonder if I inadvertently steered the conversation towards my caregiving role and life circumstances, thus creating an impression that wasn't entirely accurate.
In retrospect, I realize that I should have focused more on our shared interests, like our love for Cane Corsos and Florida's beautiful beaches. Instead, I allowed my current reality to take center stage, potentially scaring off any romantic prospects before they even had a chance to develop.
So, what can we learn from this missed opportunity? For one, it's essential to strike a balance between being open and honest with others while still presenting the best version of ourselves. A thing I know, but hadn't really thought of our lunch as a date, until was basically on my way home after our date.
And for those of us that find ourselves in unconventional or challenging circumstances, like caregiving, it's crucial to remember that our lives are multifaceted - and so are our interests.
In the end, I hope this experience serves as a reminder to be more mindful of how we present ourselves to others and to seek out meaningful connections that bring joy to both parties involved. After all, life is too short for missed opportunities - especially in a state like Florida where the sun always shines.
This may all be a manifestation on my mind. My brain does these mental gymnastics sometimes and it's usually unwarranted. So maybe my post mortem assessment is entirely off. We'll see where it goes from here.

*A* wiki article. Not accustomed to the new structure yet 😅
Joh 1:1 KJV: "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God."
Gen 1:1 KJV: "In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.
"The term "Word" comes from the Greek word logos, which means much more than just a "word" in the literal sense. It encompasses ideas like "reason," "divine principle," or "expression of God's will." The Word (Logos) is not Jesus himself, as trinitarians claim, but rather the divine reason through which all things, including Jesus, came into being.
Jesus, as a perfect creation of God, came into existence through the Logos, but it was also through this divine Logos that the world was created.
Gen 1:2-3 KJV: "And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.
3. And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.
"The Spirit of God in Genesis refers to God’s breath or life-giving force, which is the same as the Logos. In Genesis, this is expressed in Hebrew (ruach for spirit), and in John, this idea is conveyed using Greek (Logos). Both are manifestations of God's creative power, although the languages differ.
In essence, John is emphasizing that God, through His Logos, created Jesus perfect and without the seed of sin, unlike Adam who fell into sin. The Logos in John is personified as the divine expression, the instrument through which all creation—including Jesus—came into existence.
Joh 1:3-4 KJV: "All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.
4. In him was life; and the life was the light of men."
John is explaining that everything was made through this divine Logos. The life and light that come from it are what gave rise to Jesus as the perfect man, free of Adam’s sin. Jesus, born of the Word, embodies the light of truth and love and lived among us as a perfect man. However, people failed to recognize his true nature.
Joh 1:9-11 KJV: "That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.
10. He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not.
11. He came unto his own, and his own received him not."
When John says "the world was made by him," it can also be understood as "the world was made for his purpose." The Greek word διά (diá), often translated as "by," can also mean "for the sake of" or "because of." Therefore, Jesus, as the perfect creation through the Logos, came into the world for the purpose of illuminating humanity with the true light of God, even though many failed to recognize or accept him.
Mat 28:19 KJV: "...in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost."
It is argued that this phrase, used by Trinitarians as evidence for the Trinity, was not part of the original text of Matthew. Historical evidence suggests that this phrase was a later addition. During the Dark Ages, when Trinitarian theology became dominant, it was common to write dedications to the Trinity in the margins of manuscripts. Over time, these marginal notes were mistakenly incorporated into the main text by scribes. Evidence from earlier manuscripts points to a simpler version of the verse, which did not contain this Trinitarian formula. Even during the 1611 translation of the King James Bible, this alteration was known, but it was retained out of respect for tradition, rather than textual accuracy.
The original text likely called for baptism in the name of Jesus, as other scriptures, particularly in the Acts of the Apostles (Acts 2:38), consistently point to baptism being done in Jesus’ name alone, without mention of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit as a triune formula.
Joh 10:30 KJV: "I and my Father are one."
This verse is often used to argue that Jesus is claiming equality with or identity as God. However, the notion of being "one" can equally refer to unity of purpose and will, rather than suggesting that Jesus and the Father are the same being. The context here supports the idea that Jesus, being without sin, is perfectly aligned with the will of the Father. He is one with God in the sense that his heart, being pure and obedient, is unified with the Father’s desires and purpose.
This understanding of "oneness" is consistent with the broader scriptural teaching that believers are also called to be "one" with God. For instance, in John 17:21-23, Jesus prays that his disciples may be one "just as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be in us." This clearly indicates that the oneness spoken of refers to unity of will and spirit, not identity of being.
Likewise, when a person receives the Holy Spirit, they are said to be in Christ and to be united with God. When we are baptized with the Spirit, the Spirit of God enters our hearts and gives us the ability to declare Jesus as Lord (1 Cor 12:3), grafting us into the family of God and making us brothers and sisters with Christ. This is the same kind of oneness that Jesus is describing in John 10:30—a oneness of purpose, will, and spirit.
Jesus and the Spirit:
Jesus performed his good works through the power of the Spirit of God that dwelled within him. This power from the Father allowed Jesus to do the miracles and righteous deeds that bore witness to his divine mission. Jesus' unity with the Father was demonstrated through his actions, which were empowered by the Spirit, not through claiming to be the same being as the Father. His statement "I and my Father are one" should be understood in the context of this spiritual and moral unity, not as an assertion of shared identity or essence with God.
1. Matthew 28:19:
- The Trinitarian baptismal formula ("in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost") is considered by some scholars to be a later addition and not part of the original text. You emphasize that earlier practices, as seen in the Book of Acts, focused on baptism in the name of Jesus alone.
2. John 10:30:
- "I and my Father are one" refers to a unity of purpose and will, not to Jesus being God. This aligns with the idea that believers too are called to be "one" with God in the same way Jesus is. The context points to a shared mission, not shared identity.
3. Jesus and the Spirit:
- Jesus’ miracles and teachings were empowered by the Spirit of God, which dwelt in him, allowing him to act in alignment with God's will. His unity with the Father is a result of his perfect obedience and the power of the Spirit, not a claim of being God Himself.
If we consider the concept of a shared illusion or misunderstanding influencing the overarching view of who Jesus is according to the Bible, we must ask whether early Christian communities, theologians, or translators might have projected interpretations that shaped either the Trinitarian or nontrinitarian views. This opens the possibility for a third perspective that could be more accurate or consistent with the Bible's teachings, if we assume that both historical theology and tradition could have introduced biases or misunderstandings.
Impact of Shared Illusion or Misinterpretation:
1. Cultural and Historical Influence:
- The development of Trinitarian theology, especially post-Nicaea, was influenced by philosophical concepts, like those from Greek metaphysics, that were external to early Jewish monotheism. A shared cultural lens might have colored the early church's understanding of divine nature, leading them to view the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit as a triune God. Similarly, early nontrinitarian groups (like Arianism) were influenced by their own readings and contexts, emphasizing Jesus as a created being.
2. Transmission and Translation Issues:
- The idea that certain verses, like Matthew 28:19, were altered or influenced by marginal notes or later additions suggests that our modern understanding could reflect a shared misconception passed down through time. If these changes were unintentional or part of a larger doctrinal effort, a shared illusion could be reinforced over centuries, leaving us with a distorted view of Jesus' nature.
A Possible Third View:
With the possibility of shared illusions in mind, a third view might emerge as more likely than either Trinitarianism or nontrinitarianism. This view could focus on:
1. Jesus as God's Agent and Ideal Human:
- A third, intermediary perspective could portray Jesus as a unique, divinely appointed agent of God, sent to fulfill a special mission of salvation, but without the metaphysical complexity of being either co-eternal with God (Trinitarianism) or simply a created being (nontrinitarianism). In this view, Jesus represents the ideal human, chosen to exemplify God’s will, embody God’s Logos (divine reason), and act with full divine authority without being literally divine himself.
2. A Functional Oneness, Not Ontological Oneness:
- Instead of focusing on the substance of Jesus' being (as Trinitarianism does) or his created nature (as nontrinitarianism does), this view could emphasize Jesus' functional relationship with God. Jesus is "one with the Father" in mission, purpose, and alignment with God's will, as suggested in John 17:21-23, but this oneness does not imply sameness of essence. It reflects a perfect, sinless human being empowered by God to carry out divine works.
3. Jesus as a Manifestation of God’s Word Without Divinity:
- This view might hold that Jesus embodies the *Logos* (Word) not by being the eternal Word made flesh but by fully manifesting God's message and will on Earth. This allows for the concept that Jesus is the perfect representative of God, but not God himself. It would fit well with the idea that Jesus performs miracles through the Spirit of God and that his relationship to the Father is one of perfect submission and harmony, not ontological equality.
Biblical Evidence for the Third View:
1. John 5:19: "The Son can do nothing by himself; he can only do what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does, the Son also does."
- This indicates a deep relationship between Jesus and the Father but emphasizes Jesus' dependence on the Father rather than equality.
2. John 17:3: "Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent."
- Jesus clearly identifies the Father as the "only true God" while placing himself as the one sent by God, not as God himself.
3. 1 Timothy 2:5: "For there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus."
- This verse supports the view of Jesus as a mediator, a special human appointed to bridge the gap between humanity and God, rather than being divine himself.
4. Acts 2:22: "Men of Israel, listen to this: Jesus of Nazareth was a man accredited by God to you by miracles, wonders, and signs, which God did among you through him, as you yourselves know."
- This reinforces the idea that Jesus, though empowered by God, is portrayed as a man through whom God worked, rather than being inherently divine.
The Implications of This Third View:
- Avoiding Both Extremes: This view avoids the metaphysical complexities of Trinitarianism (where three persons share one essence) and the strict subordinationism of nontrinitarianism (where Jesus is simply a created being). It emphasizes Jesus as a perfect human aligned with God’s will and filled with God’s Spirit, empowered to act as God’s representative but not to be conflated with God Himself.
- Culturally and Historically Grounded:
This view might be more consistent with first-century Jewish monotheism, which saw God as absolutely one and emphasized prophets and messianic figures as specially chosen agents. It avoids later philosophical developments that influenced Trinitarian formulations.
- Biblically Coherent: This perspective can incorporate a range of scriptural teachings about Jesus’ unique role as the *Logos* without requiring his eternal co-equality with the Father. It allows for Jesus' full humanity and his role as the ultimate reflection of God's will and power on Earth, while maintaining God’s singularity.
Conclusion:
If we entertain the concept of a shared illusion or historical misinterpretation, this third view—Jesus as the perfect, sinless human agent of God, empowered by the Spirit but not ontologically divine—could emerge as a more coherent and biblically grounded alternative. This view emphasizes Jesus' unique relationship with God as the ideal, sinless human being, fully united with God’s purpose, but not equal to God in essence. It sidesteps the doctrinal conflicts between Trinitarianism and nontrinitarianism, presenting a biblically faithful understanding that emphasizes Jesus' role without requiring complex theological constructs.
