As much as I dislike Meta, I don't think instances should block Threads for all their users.
Federation enables us to connect with everyone, everywhere, on all platforms.
It enables Mastodon users to still connect to their friends who haven't joined the platform yet, while not requiring them to leave our private and open source community just for that interaction.
I have blocked Threads on my account. This was my personal decision, as it should be for all.

@npub1zpu…qh6x it is a calendar, contacts, and file sync server, but only the file sync can be end-to-end encrypted, or even just encrypted at rest, and neither of those options are stable.

Does anyone know if there are any open source, maintained pieces of software for any of the following?
- End-to-end encrypted email server
- End-to-end encrypted calendar server
- End-to-end encrypted contacts server
- End-to-end encrypted file sync server
- DNS-over-HTTPS DNS server
I currently use Proton Mail, Proton Calendar, Proton Drive, and Quad9, respectively, but I don't like the idea of relying on their closed sources, in case they decide to no longer offer them or something.

@npub16ur…mx4u sorry, that slipped my mind. To have a proper comparison though, you should probably try the PinePhone Pro and Librem 5 with GNOME Camera (Snapshot) too. I don't think it works on the PinePhone (at least it doesn't for me, with the Flatpak, on Mobian)

@npub16ur…mx4u the important question is: what apps were used to take these? Megapixels on the PinePhone and PinePhone Pro, Millipixels on the Librem 5? What about GNOME Camera (used to be called Pinhole). I'm not sure what it works on, or what photos from it look like.

Does anyone else have audio output issues on the #PineTab2 ? I mean, before, during, and after playing sound, both through the speaker and through headphones, it makes a very noticeable noise, like static.
I'm running Mobian btw.

I have no doubt Signal is private and secure, but their approach to open source leaves much to be desired.
The source code for their app is open, but it includes a dependency on Google Play Services, even if you install it from their website, and they are against it being published to F-Droid (who would also remove this dependency). The only other option is a fork with no guarantee of updates. Dependency aside, updates are important and you shouldn't use a fork for such an important app.

It has been out for a while now, and you said you would open source it, but it still hasn't been done.
Both Proton Drive and Proton Pass came out a while after Calendar, and their mobile apps are already open source.

@npub16ur…mx4u The Fairphone 5 is very exciting! I want to switch to mobile Linux in 2-3 years if it's ready. Maybe this will be the device to have good specs, support it well, and push mobile Linux to even more people!

@npub13w6…479m I couldn't agree more! There are so many companies dedicated to finding ways to suck carbon out the atmosphere and whatnot.
That's great, and we will probably even need it when the crisis is over and we want to return global temperatures to what they were.
But none of that will make any damn difference if we let fossil fuel companies destroy the planet in the meantime!

This if fine if it's just a group, but in some places, being out of the group means being discriminated against in your community, or your family, or even by the whole legal system. And that's another reason not to ask questions.

@npub16ur…mx4u @npub1wxm…mlzy Not all repos for mobile Linux are on GitHub. In fact, GNOME projects are on their GitLab. Mobian and PostmarketOS are on the Debian and main GitLabs respectively. Some stuff is on GitLab, some stuff on SourceHut.
In addition to this, mobile support for Linux apps is way more mainstream with GTK4 + Libadwaita, so apps may support it, without necessary being tagged as such.

It respects your privacy, gives users access to videos without ads, and gives creators more revenue and the freedom to post whatever content they want without worrying about demonetisation.

I think it's mostly because they are a new platform, not aiming to compete with YouTube. They're also focussed on education, and creators have an actual stake in the company. So I understand why they don't want just anyone signing up.
I'm not sure how you join as a creator, probably because, again, it's a new platform. You can probably get more info by emailing them.

@npub1wst…ez75 I am also probably going to go from Arch to Debian, because I am a @npub1ug4…d762 developer now (and looking to create a Debian package!), so it's easier to build packages and whatnot on the actual system, rather than through a chroot.
I also like Debian's free software rules. And, I have realised that if I just unselect the desktop environment in Debian's installer, I can install mostly what I want, like Arch.

@npub1x0j…ul60 You mention in this video that creators like yourselves make a lot more money from ads than from direct support. This is sad, but unfortunately not very unsurprising.
Have you considered joining an alternative platform to YouTube? I'm specifically thinking of https://nebula.tv, which users pay to access, and in exchange they aren't subjected to data collection or ads.
I thank you for uploading your videos to PeerTube, but that is obviously not supporting you financially.
