Of all the #cdrom based #games on any #computer or #console, alien breed 3d on the amiga is the strangest release. Put out essentially before cd burners were a thing, it has copy protection... the old kind. As in "look up table a column x row y and enter the number" kind of copy protection, with an all black book full of numbers. Ive seen this stuff on old floppy games like tmnt, but a cd rom based game on a computer with no keyboard? So dumb.

My doctor has put me on a #Plantbased #Keto #diet for the next 4 weeks. That's not a high-fat diet, that's a low-carb diet. So basically, #vegetarian for a month. I *HATE* #Onions so incredibly fucking much, jfc. The only food item that completely ruins a meal for me. I cannot stand them, they make me gag. I can't say enough how much I can't stand them. It's not even enough to "pick them off" because I can still taste the juice on whatever they were on.

With AI (we should really use ML IMO), it's actually got applications that other things don't solve well enough yet. The problem with ML is that people are acting like it's a panacea for *EVERYTHING* rather than the sort of specific tool it's good for, and that's leading to a lot of poor applications that is poisoning the well.

@npub1ykd…6j2y Depending on the cpu, it's also a problem with modern compilers like GCC. It's a problem that's actually currently being discussed/debated in dreamcast homebrew circles because there is a shiny new Hardware Abstraction Layer someone built with neat macros for accessing the SH4 fastmath functions, but using those in GCC is leading to problems where it's colliding with GCC's own optimizations because it's not paying attention to the clobber list.
I *think* it's only an SH4 thing tho.

@npub1ykd…6j2y sometimes you can get too fancy with inline assembly tho. Even on ancient cpus, sometimes its smarter to let the compiler choose how to best use registers intelligently instead of inlining your own hand written assembly and managing clobbering registers manually.

It seems many who are into #PC #Gaming don't really seem to know that #Shader #Compilation #Stutter is basically a #Windows problem that largely doesn't exist in #Linux. Shader Compilation Stutter occurs because shaders need to be compiled from source for every computer on the CPU itself, which takes real-world time. It's a "nine women can't make a baby in 1 month" problem, where the brute strength of your CPU doesn't matter, it'll still take time.

His deal about "not being able to act against an officer of OCP" is still intact and nobody knows about it. He doesn't get his wife and kid back. He's still a slave to the police. Last weekend, an old friend of mine of over 30 years told me his elderly dad was getting rid of a bunch of ancient computers, and invited me over to pick at their lot. Came home with 6 CRT monitors, 3 towers + 1 horizontal case, an 8088, two pentium IIs, and an EGA card. Which they were grateful for, because dumping CRT monitors actually costs money. Win-win for everyone!

@npub1up2…k6en It's because, when these machines were new, they were the realm of PC Users groups, which operated in a very "for the greater good" mindset. The PC Users Group I used to attend meetings at encouraged people to bring in old computer equipment and books that they weren't using, and had a pile labeled "if you can use it, take it free." I both donated and grabbed lots of great stuff like this in the 90's. It was just embedded into early PC culture, you can see it in stuff like Linux still.

This one guy came with a bunch of kids and was working, and when he left, someone else told us that he was actually the CEO of this fortune 500 company, rolled up his sleeves like a normal guy. This guy in army fatigues came by, hugged my mom, and grabbed her hand, stuck something it, and left. It was five $100 bills.

First day of clean up, I lost it, broke down crying, and made a tweet saying how overwhelmed we were. We had this dude who got into his truck from west virginia, and drove directly to the house to help.

They were so RAM starved that keywords were turned into single identifiers, i.e. you couldn't type "print," rather "print" was a single button 1 byte character that had it's own special graphic in the font ROM lol.

I've been using linux as my daily driver since the 90's, and have not only played games on linux for decades, but also make games in linux.
With all that said, let me say that today is still night & day what it used to be. It's breathtaking how quickly went from "running a few tent pole games" to "running basically every game"
