Can anyone familiar with GNOME, NetworkManager, Fedora Silverblue, or Intel network cards help?
I have an Intel NUC running Fedora Silverblue 40 with GNOME 46. It’s connected to Ethernet but at some point I connected it to Wi-Fi. Since the Ethernet connection gives better performance—and I don’t want unnecessary interference—I turn off Wi-Fi in GNOME. Whenever I reboot, both Ethernet AND Wi-Fi are disabled. If I leave Wi-Fi enabled, both remain enabled when I reboot.

I got my hands on a Pixel 9 Pro today, and… it is *substantially* bigger and heavier than Pixel 8. :( I thought it might be negligible but I think Pixel 8 is _already_ too big, so every little bit bigger and heavier makes a huge difference.
I appreciate that the “smaller” phone got the same guts and camera as the bigger pro phone, but sheesh. It’s still too damn big. :(

The eventual automation would look like:
1. Grab the latest two releases of a thing from a JSON API (which gives us the timestamps)
2. For each day in that range, add up a specific number (e.g. "downloads") in the YYYY/MM/DD.json files
3. Publish this somewhere on the web
Steps one and three I'm pretty comfortable with. It's step two that just seems way overcomplicated.

I'm stuck on figuring out what method to crunch the data. I am competent enough with Vala and JavaScript, and could probably figure out how to do it with Python.
But there are a lot of small annoyances here, like needing to step through the directories based on dates (ugh).
Anyone want to throw their hat in the ring to help me solve this? 😅 Am I looking at this totally backwards?

I'm poking at this problem again, and I feel like I'm pretty close to knowing what needs to happen—I'm just getting stuck on how to best implement it.
I have two timestamps (e.g. 2024-05-22T01:33:39.234Z and 2024-07-15T14:44:27.254Z).
I have a weird date-based folder structure full of JSON files (e.g. 2024/05/22.json, 2024/05/23.json, …, 2024/07/14.json, 2024/07/15.json).
I want to add a specific value from each of those JSON files together.
Eventually, I'd like to automate this even more.

RCS on iPhone is rolling out to iOS 18 beta users, and it’s pretty whack!
Typing indicators, read receipts, and even things like HDR video from Android to iPhone just work. It looks like there is still some jankiness on the iPhone side with sending media (falls back to SMS) and reactions (sends a fallback message), but emoji reactions from Android show up correctly as tapbacks on the iPhone.
It’s almost like Apple has been artificially holding back the messaging experience for their users! 🙃

Wrapping up a very productive GNOME design call… about accent colors! We addressed every single blocking topic and have a clear way forward. I don’t want to promise anything specific (especially timelines), buuuut it’s looking good to me.
I might write up a blog post to summarize the direction once we sort some of the little details out. But there’s a pretty good consensus across half a dozen or so people doing the work—harder than it sounds. 😅

Alright #HomeAssistant nerds, I have a question. I would like to set up a standard way to get a derived value back from a number of sensors; for example, given a sensor’s PM2.5, PM10, Ozone, CO, SO2, and/or NO2 reading, I would like to return an estimated air quality index (AQI). Ideally I could also have a standard way to map any given AQI value to a category strong, e.g. 10 = Good, 75 = Moderate, 175 = Unhealthy, etc.

@npub1tfw…mlle I think that’s entirely parallel to paid apps, though. :) Flathub wants to enable open source apps to be on equal footing with proprietary apps when it comes to funding and accepting user payments (whether “purchases” or “donations.”) We’re also innovating by enabling developers to address the reality of open source funding where they can decide (on their own terms) what portion of their apps’ sales are directed towards the underlying tech they’re building on.

Wondering why this matters? Resource allocation!
Imagine a large org that doesn’t consider Linux a main platform, but has a popular app on Flathub. They’re getting internal pressure to support this hot Steam Deck thing w/millions of users, but don’t know if they should invest in supporting the existing Flatpak or just distribute through Steam.
If we can show that they have a sizable audience already on Steam Deck, it means more investment in the Flatpak app and thus the ecosystem beyond Steam.

Steam Deck users, can you share the OSTree and Flatpak version numbers from your Steam Decks? I don’t have one for reference, but the gist should be to load Desktop Mode, open a terminal, and type `ostree --version` and `flatpak --version` then paste the versions output. :)

An ISV has asked if Flathub can provide stats of how many installs of their app are coming from Steam Deck users.
Today, we can’t—we’d need a change in Flatpak itself to add the OS name/version to the user-agent sent along with install/update transactions. The best we may be able to do today is see the exact versions of OSTree and Flatpak that are included in SteamOS, check if those are relatively unique, and provide a rough estimate based on that.

I just saw that Mozilla is retiring Mozilla Location Services which provided an open, crowdsourced alternative to proprietary location services from Google and other vendors. 😰

For example: object recognition in the Image Viewer app to remove backgrounds; algorithmically improved camera quality in video calls; autocorrect! These are all areas that use ML algorithms on other platforms, and I don’t think that’s bad; you take a bunch of data, train an algorithm, then ship that in the OS/GNOME/etc. to be genuinely helpful.
First, we can get on board with *that*, right? Personally, I don’t consider that “AI,” even.

Oh, and: how does this interact w/developers using their own accent colors?
The elementary approach (and simplest Adwaita approach) would be that only apps that don’t override the accent color in their app would get the user-chosen accent color, but is that what we/users want?
I believe macOS added an option to either let apps use their own accent colors OR to have them use the user-chosen accent color which adds another layer of complexity I’d want to avoid, but… will users expect that?

The long game is paying off: more and more cross-platform apps are getting FreeDesktop dark style support for free. 💪
Recently I’ve noticed Signal and Slack both respect the Dark Style preference in GNOME, which should mean it works across elementary OS, KDE, and other FreeDesktop environments as well. This is thanks to having it standardized under FD.o and then getting it into Chromium, and thus Electron.
If we want more apps to “Just Work” on Linux, this is the sort of work we have to do!

I have a friend who frequently plays the same single-player RPG games as me: Horizon, Spider-Man, Fallout, Jedi, Death Stranding…
They always finish the game quickly, progressing through the story then doing side-quests at the end. I do all the side quests as I discover them, winding up comically over-leveled but also taking 10× as long to beat the game.
Part of the issue: I have kids & very little time to play video games. I just realized another reason: I was recently diagnosed with ADHD. 😝

I’d lightweight been considering trying an #iPhone once a few of my nits were solved—and #Apple appeared to be systematically addressing them over the years:
Default apps, #USBC, #PWA, #RCS…
But now they’re throwing a monumental tantrum and behaving in the most entitled, anti-consumer way possible—if you wrote it into a fictional plot, you’d get dragged for being unrealistically over the top!
So I’ve again lost interest. Apple can keep poisoning their walled garden; it doesn’t affect me. 🤷

Ubuntu seems to change the corners of tiled windows, even when using corner tiling (not just side-by-side tiling as supported in Mutter). Does anyone know how they're doing that? Because honestly, the tiling as-is on Ubuntu would be pretty nice to get into GNOME if possible. For… reasons¹… I’m currently running Endless OS inside Boxes as a Flatpak on Endless OS inside Boxes as a Flatpak on Fedora Silverblue and… it works??
¹I need screenshots of a specific thing in a specific custom image of Endless OS, which can be generated as a VM image from on Endless OS, but my host is Fedora Silverblue because I need dark style for headaches. The good news is Endless OS 5.2 will ship a more up-to-date GNOME Shell so I can just use that on my dev machine, again!

Remember to share positive posts, memes, etc. about open source things you use and like. A simple “I like this” or “thanks for working on this” can go a long way!
Happy people carry on using things quietly while negativity gets shared, memed, and shoved in front of folks who work on your favorite projects. One negative comment too often outweighs ten positive ones, because human brains are dumb.

PostmarketOS blew up on my secondhand OnePlus 6T (it boots to TTY after an update, yay!), so I'm looking for the best way to test GNOME stuff on it again.
Does anyone have a recommendation for the “best” way from an upstream GNOME perspective—like, do we have GNOME OS images for it? 😅
I threw Droidian on it because someone suggested I check it out and it’s working alright but it defaults to Phosh, and I’m not going to package the mobile GNOME Shell stuff myself.

@npub1u55…6c8n hmm… this would be useful to know, as I have had a similar annoying automation for one of my Wi-Fi light switches. It would trigger whenever automatically turned off, but I only wanted it to trigger when I physically/manually turned it off.

Working on a little thing I hope to submit to Flathub soon. Not really all that special or complex, but I don't love how PWAs are handled by any browser on Linux, and I want to eventually add some more interesting functionality to the header to make it feel even more native... but this is a start.

I could do what I’ve done in the past, which is to design something “compatible with” the toy which could be used to replace a part but isn’t an exact original match.
I have no idea where this lands when it comes to ethics, legality, etc.—and it’s not like I’ve researched if the connection mechanism between ice cream parts is patented or something. 😅
I just want folks to be able to repair/restore toys instead of having to throw them out or buy entirely new sets for a single part.

Resisting the urge to model and upload designs of every part for every toy my preschooler got this Christmas…
I’ll probably do like the individual parts for a play ice cream shop, because it would be neat to print extra toppings or whatever—and especially handy if you lose one piece, as you can’t buy the parts individually as far as I can tell. But ethically it feels a little weird to share something that theoretically could be used to compete with the original toy manufacturer. 🤔

All of the glowing photography reviews of the Pixel 8, but like… is the camera app laggy af for anyone else? It’s kind of hard to capture good photos of moving subjects if the preview runs at 1FPS and you can only take two photos every ten seconds.

I also can’t stress enough how important getting vaccinated is.
I had not gotten my COVID-19 vaccine yet this year; I was planning to get it *this week* ahead of the holidays and am now kicking myself for not scheduling it sooner. My wife had recently gotten her vaccine, and her symptoms were far more mild than mine even though I had antivirals and she did not. And our non-vaccinated friends and family have had much worse symptoms, and were sick much longer than either of us.

I’d say my stamina bar (to stick w/the analogy) is like… 80%, now? Compared to ~50% yesterday? I definitely still feel brain-fogged, and I still have some headaches and a bit of a sore throat.
Today’s my last day of Paxlovid and I’m looking forward to not having a constant nasty bitter taste in my mouth; I’m super thankful I was able to get treatment, though, and would encourage seeing if antivirals are available to be prescribed to anyone diagnosed w/COVID-19.

I’m still alive!! Feeling better today than any day in the past… week or more? I haven’t updated for a few days but it’s been much of the same, plus caring for my kids who also came down with pretty bad cold symptoms and exhaustion.
We’ve all been quarantined for a week since the onset of symptoms, now. The kids seem to be back to ~100% but are masking in public to be safe (not a bad idea, regardless!).

I'm having a weird issue where my Dell XPS is failing to write any SD card on Fedora Silverblue 39 using any app (including Impression, Etcher, and Raspberry Pi imager), but if I boot the XPS off of a Windows 11 USB drive, I can write it just fine with either Etcher or the Raspberry Pi imager app.
I haven't tried on other hardware, but... is anyone else having this sort of issue? :-/

To be 1000% clear, I would take the uncomfortable side effects of Paxlovid over debilitating COVID-19 symptoms or lasting long-COVID symptoms. And if you’re able to get an anti-viral treatment for COVID, I would still definitely recommend it!
But it’s not some miracle drug without its own side effects. 😣
Otherwise, I seem to be doing as well as I could hope today. Still low stamina, still a bit of a cough.

Day four-ish: we all slept in a bit which was probably good for our health but also always makes the kids kind of wild since the day’s schedule is disrupted.
(Oh, yeah, my partner and two kids also have it!)
I knew about the constant nasty taste that Paxlovid gives you, but yesterday I found out the *other* top symptom. 🚽

Oh, I was able to get Paxlovid yesterday and took my first dose in the evening, second this morning. Yep, that nasty bitter taste is still there. But, I think that may be helping me feel a lot better a lot faster than otherwise.
I still have a pretty nasty cough that comes and goes, and my head feels like it’s pressurized (making those coughs painful!), but I’m feeling *much* better than yesterday over all. I’m just trying to remind myself to not overdo it even if I think I’m feeling better.

I rested most of the day with occasional times getting up to help care for the kids and get food or meds or whatever. Feeling MUCH better this evening, but it’s like COVID is debuffing my stamina bar to 20% compared to usual. I feel relatively normal, do like two things, and then feel like I just ran a marathon and need to catch my breath and rest.

Day 3-ish of COVID-19 symptoms: this morning was ROUGH and I was super winded doing menial things like dishes or preparing food. At one point I felt suddenly and overwhelmingly exhausted and warm (but wasn’t actually running a fever, probably because I’ve been taking pain medication) and had to lay down in the middle of the kitchen for a minute. 😵‍💫

Welp, COVID-19 got me. Feeling pretty miserable, and reminded that American healthcare just sucks in every possible way.
Today I went to my insurance website to try to do a telehealth appointment like I have in the past, and of course it's completely different, completely broken, and says it can't confirm my insurance information. You know, the telehealth option THROUGH MY INSURANCE THAT I'M LOGGED IN WITH.

Pretty wild to me that the mobile platform that has majority market share, doesn’t allow users to install apps from outside of their own tightly-controlled store, requires all purchases to be served through that store with a platform fee, doesn’t allow users to sideload their own apps, doesn’t allow entire categories of apps like browser engines and game streaming, and doesn’t even allow users to set their own preferred apps in many cases is not a monopoly… but Android somehow is??

@npub1mxj…mvsc yep, I have a handful of brass nozzles on hand since the last time I wore one out. I'll consider a hardened nozzle, but it's kinda hard to justify when the brass ones are <$1 and have been lasting fairly well for me with various more-abrasive filaments.
