I've read that post and I know about the block reconstruction, but that doesn't address my argument about bandwidth. If everyone is running filters then nodes and miners will never see certain transactions to cache them.

I agree with you about some of this, but I just want to point out that the filters are what's causing bandwidth strain because nodes and other miners that aren't aware of certain transactions and have to download them to validate a recently mined block. Bandwidth usage is already limited by block size and blocks are almost always full anyway, so it's not like spam would actually increase the amount of data that needs to be shared every time a block is mined. Having everyone aware of all the transactions available to be mined would reduce latency and keep the network running smoother.
As for the rest, I agree that spam is marginally detrimental to the monetary use case, but I also think it will be priced out pretty easily at higher fee rates. My current opinion is that I would like to see fees reach a higher baseline to preemptively price out spam before the filters are dropped, but I do think they should be dropped eventually.

There is no reason why an attacker couldn't do that already. Consensus allows it.
An attack like that would probably come from a govt because it would require law enforcement involvement to follow up on the threat. As soon as they get one node runner it would be obvious to everyone who the attacker is. The data could then be pruned before they could go after any significant number of node operators. No one is forced to store any data that is in op_return or witness if they don't want to.

If you're right and filters are the only thing keeping Bitcoin from being destroyed by spammers then we are fucked anyway. As distasteful as spam is, the smooth functioning of the network and keeping the cost of running a node down is a higher priority imo. The fee market will determine what the best use of blockspace is.

Fiat food applies to pet food as well. Many of the major brands are low quality ultra processed garbage. Kibble may meet the minimum nutrition requirements, but what process did it have to go through to be transformed into those dry little bits with an indefinite shelf life? Even the wet foods are probably made with the lowest quality excess parts of meat processing, ground up and mixed with who knows what additives.
My poor baby Zeus was throwing up all the time when I got him and it took many trials of many different foods to find something more agreeable. I eventually started feeding him top shelf cat foods that were basically just whole tuna or other fish, so I switched to straight up canned tuna. I feel bad for all the years I fed my cats cheap garbage and I'm glad Zeus taught me this lesson through all his vomiting 😂

I've only done a handful of these jobs in the last four years. Usually I am driving a transplant team from the airport to the hospital where they extract the organ and back again. This one was interesting because they just put the liver in the trunk and I drove alone to the airport and handed it off the the pilot of a private jet. For about 45 minutes I was the only person in possession of this live human liver that was destined for someone's life saving surgery.
It's a pretty cool process to be a part of, but I can't help but laugh at the chain of custody going from surgeons at the hospital to some random dude (me) as part of the process. I do work for a high end car service, so it's better than calling an Uber, but still you would think there would be more reverence for a human body part with such an important purpose 😂

If Core's goal is to get a large percentage of nodes to drop their filters then of course they are going to attack the credibility of other implementations that go against that. I'm not a huge fan of Luke for a lot of reasons, but Knots has a good track record so far and this controversy is drawing more eyes to his code which is also good. It's almost entirely based on Core anyway so there isn't much that needs to be reviewed if you already trust Core anyway.

Mechanic says that inscriptions are an unintended consequence or a bug of Taproot. Why are we capitulating to this bug and not trying to fix it? Is Bitcoin permanently and fundamentally alerted to no longer be narrowly focused monetary network, and now it's also cloud storage for anyone willing to fork over the sats for blockspace? I get that it also enables a lot of functionality and novel scaling solutions, but it seems extremely risky to me. At least inscriptions are more onerous for the data hoarders to inscribe and reconstruct in order to access their data. If we let them put data on the Blockchain in its raw form that could be inviting even more problems than it solves.

Alright, so if the node is never seeing some transactions it still effects estimation even with the current method. That alleviates some of my concerns about the argument being completely fabricated.
I still think mechanic has a lot of good points though. Having perfect local fee estimation doesn't seem like it's that important when it only theoretically matters in some extreme edge use cases like justice transactions. Is it really worth opening the floodgates to relaying around infinite op_returns for slightly better fee estimation?

I had to listen to the WBD episode with Mechanic twice to make sure I got this right. One of the arguments Core is making is that nodes should have more complete mempools for better fee estimation. Mechanic said that Core doesn't even use the local mempool to estimate fees. I have no way to verify this, so correct me if I'm wrong, but if that's true that is a blatant contradiction. Why would this be an argument if it doesn't even apply to their own software? That's insane.
I'm not sure if it's exactly a smoking gun, but it's a pretty huge red flag to me. I've been defending them because the idea that the OG implementation is being corrupted is almost unthinkable and I wanted to believe Bitcoin is rock solid, but even so I've still mostly advocated to not force the removal of filters on the nodes. Now I don't know what to think. I might actually have to run Knots.

I'm seeing most of the pushback on nostr and more in favor on podcasts personally, but there's a lot of podcasts and I picked my favorites long before this started. The opposition views this as an existential threat to Bitcoin and is very angry and vocal about it. I don't think those in favor (or neutral) view this as being as huge a deal as the other side is making it out to be. There have been some very harsh words directed at core devs and accusations that those in favor are not "true Bitcoiners". It's not a conducive environment for healthy discussion because even the more rational opposition posts are filled with comments calling people names.
Can I ask what podcasts do you listen to that are opposed? I am open to listening to all perspectives.
