Not enough apocalypse stories have city states, and when they do it's always like a proxy for "we have a standing army". You almost never see like New York cobbling together what it can. It's still got the subways, but all the trains run on parts cannibalized from other trains. Folks still live in the suburbs, with the assumption they are close enough to be protected, so long as they provide their tribute.

I don't think any governmental agency in the USA could host a public registration server on the Fediverse due to first amendment considerations. Perhaps more accurately they could but everyone would defederate due to moderation concerns.
You'd probably have to have a system where the government provided everyone a single user instance, which sounds like a logistical nightmare.
Not sure the Fediverse is designed for hundreds of millions of individual servers either, although maybe it is.

@npub1zdp…vqv8 there was a running joke in the cartoon Freakazoid about a prevalent chain of grocery stores called Anubis Mart. This is never elaborated in the show, it just keeps showing up, occasionally accompanied by a wink and a nod. But to me at least part of the joke is we assume ancient iconography is sacred or mystical when really it could have as easily been a logo.

@npub1psd…9sr7 I think they've got the wrong Sci Fi writer who had Reagan's ear, and that it's Jerry Pournelle who has the most influence on modern conservative thought, even if often indirectly. In either author's case there's a pragmatism that didn't make it across in the translation, Pournelle was an advocate for getting off fossil fuels for daily use for example.

Perhaps more to the point how many people live on Earth in your story, beyond those living in the Artic. Are there people further south who live a hard life but have more access to raw materials for example.

Also if they are paying 38 million "too much", how much are they making. Because it's implied that 38 mil is the difference between internally produced and externally produced white noise podcasts, but what's the ad revenue.

@npub1zdp…vqv8 the meat alternatives simply being available always reminds me of an article a straight-edge friend of mine posted about why people get angry at those who don't drink. The basic premise is there's an implied moral decision, e.g. eat meat or have a drink, and folks have justified their choices to themselves. When someone takes the arguably more moral choice it's seen as an indictment of the seemingly less moral choice. When in many cases the choice is preferential rather than moral.

@npub1hpc…hjn3 the French Revolution was well documented and it's seems impossible to study that without seeing a huge mess. I wonder if most revolutions are just as messy, but documented much more narrowly. All of which is to say, yeah it's never going to be clear that it's the "right time" for dramatic change.
