we would have to clarify the range of expectancies in addition to the average. Historically there was significant infant mortality, but people who lived to mid age lived to be fairly old, so there was a wide range. And those elders provided cultural knowledge which was useful for learning how to feed and water yourself.

Spend some time with the WHO’s Airborne Risk Indoor Assessment calculator. It doesn’t give CO2 as an independent variable, but your experience with a CO2 meter will let you easily guess what the CO2 reading would be. You can model just about any human scale situation: volume of airspace, # people, activities, time, including ventilation and filtration rates and respirators. Watch the short range transmission.

given the fact that humans stumble onwards as long as they continue to reproduce, there is huge cultural growth potential towards lifespans on the nasty brutish and short side. Say birth to death at 30? 25? This doesn’t directly answer the question as to where it will fall to under the influence of nonstop c19 but it can freefall a LONG way.

Low CO2 no longer proxies safe, even though high ambient CO2 always proxies potential danger. That study you posted about airplane flights is an example of this. Even in the presence of filtration the virus is now efficiently transmitting at short, fast range. You can also look at the WHO’s calculator; it will show that ventilation or cleaned air do nothing to change the very high short range transmission rate. @npub1hmg…f0l6

covid has become too infectious to need indoor concentrations to efficiently transmit. The short range exhale plumes are now thoroughly sufficient. So CO2 is no longer a meaningful proxy for safety. You can have excellent ventilation or filtration and one sick person briefly talking near you and that is it.

your point about having to clean the air everything time you open the front door is a good illustration of how difficult it is to retrofit an apartment where the air immediately outside the door is dangerous. It is so so much easier when air outside the doors is safe (and windows, vents, and all the penetrations in the walls we think are closed but actually leak air)

It’s not easy dealing with airborne pathogens and many people within transmission distance and buildings that want to let air in from all sorts of places…. Can you fit some sort of small fan and filter to the window, maybe across the bottom of it? @npub16hq…meey

I sometimes mull over what it would take for a human society to beat an airborne virus head on. Respirators are the center of it. But very, very little of such a world even resembles ours. Mammals who share our space and aren’t easily respirator’ed become a huge problem, like little kids and pets. Can’t guarantee they stay clean outside the home. And keeping the home safe is a huge problem with dense housing.

And right there you point out a very important part of understanding the trajectory of the pandemic. People in cities can’t really get air that is respirator clean when they take off the respirator at home. (Technically they can, but sealing building envelope of your apartment and providing forced HEPA filtered fresh air and evacuation air at the other end of the place isn’t viable at scale). @npub1mlh…g6vr

I suspect that a factor in the zero covid crowd’s displeasure at the short range plume transmission is it shows that none of HEPA, UV, ventilation, nor the outdoors will stop ultra infectious covid. And that is their great hope of a frictionless return. Not many people want to face that respirators are all we have now and everything else plays a supporting role. @npub1mlh…g6vr

yeah this is fascinating information but it is really only useful as a supplement to a respirator protocol. Minimizing the free floating lifetime of the virus doesn’t help any when a person is talking to you and you are breathing it in fresh.
