Yeah there's a glaring blank spot in my observations: the non-white perspective, unless it was in Top 40 or I happened to catch it MTV. Thanks for this suggestion. I know the slang "Keep it real" came from AAVE, and plenty of R&B pop had these themes as well, so I know something along these lines was happening there too.

I've been listening to various 90s music via YouTube reaction videos. I'm noticing something.
There was so much PAIN in our music. We were raw, bleeding, so broken, so defeated and miserable and resilient and stoic.
It resonates in me hard right now, because looking back it was just pain that steadily got worse, so it's like, Alanis you have no idea. But its present intensity in no way invalidates its depths back then.
There's all the obvious examples like TOOL, Nine Inch Nails, Nirvana, all grunge, nu metal, 70% of alternative, etc etc. But even like, Alanis Morissette's One Hand in My Pocket, which on the surface is upbeat and positive (certainly seemed so back then, perhaps in comparison), is lyrically oozing with dissatisfaction, pain, and surrender to the endless frustrations of life.
The slacker persona was a cope – a weak rebellion, a cover, a buffer against disappointment.
This is an aspect of 90s culture I've not really looked at before.

This is both the strength and the weakness of our generation. Society needed radical acceptance to put away the denial that shrouded society in decades previous, denial of the ills that existed all around us. No more lies, no more fronting, just get it out there, we can take it.
But that left us with the downsides of acceptance: we didn't do much else to stop those ills.
Though shining a light and winning the moral right to authenticity, preferenced over appearances, was itself a major accomplishment.

American GenX grew up with a perpetual sense of being lied to by everyone around us. We grasped at anything that seemed "real." Most of the media we made in our youth reflects this, and can only be truly understood through this lens. If you're younger, try that on while consuming 90s music, movies, books, or TV, see if anything makes more sense. (I'd be curious to know.)
Our favorite word "whatever" actually holds a precious place in that zeitgeist. It was an expression of radical acceptance. Whatever it was, we'd accept it, without fuss, without emotion, even the hint of wry cynicism we could hardly be bothered with. We could sense that we had no control over anything anyway. Whatever. I love the open road. By car, I've been as far east as Ohio (from Washington state, as a child and teenager traveling with my mother), and have generally felt pretty safe, especially when sticking to the freeways and major highways, with precautions at rest stops and such. My last long trip was to Salt Lake City a couple of years ago, (direct not exploring). My son and I have talked about roadtripping to Montana. This is immense privilege that I've discovered not everyone has.
But I've had to stop and think a bit more lately, about if I get the chance to travel again. I pass as a tomboy, but are there places I should avoid nonetheless? And what if I were on T? Would that change?
So this subject for the film hits home a bit.

Perception is power. Humanity knows this in our subconscious. We see it in words like "prestige," which used to mean "trick, illusion, imposture." And in "glamour," which meant "magic, enchantment."
We teach everyone mathematics, but not the mechanics of power, which are knowable. If everyone understood how power works, it would stop working the way the powerful want it to. Because *they* know how power works.
To truly democratize society, we have to teach everyone how to consciously wield power to become empowered. Starting with 1+1 – Power is the ability to make decisions for yourself or others. Power is at play anytime two or more beings interact.
That isn't just about voting. It's everything from how you hold yourself to how you think about certain groups of people to where your money comes from and where it goes. If you're not thinking about it, you're most certainly being controlled by someone.

I like to think of rephrasings of culturally-accepted norms to jog people out of how we normally think of things.
I really like inserting the word "authorized" or "unauthorized" where it doesn't belong, like "unauthorized gender presentation" or "authorized sexual relations."
That's not a power tie. It's a costume. When you put it on, you have power. But it's not the man who has the power, it's just his costume. Put him ragged camo and he's a different person.

My real motive is that I'm curious. And I'm passionate about infosec and 90s tech, intersecting with "how do they control us" which is my wheelhouse. (Info dump after some quick research.) This is probably knowable. Kevin Mitnick's website says that he helped popularize the term in the 1990s... when he was a teenager. He was famously imprisoned for computer crimes. I'm not the biggest fan of Mitnick (he's a complicated figure), but I can't really buy that he was trying to load this term so we couldn't talk about it's older usage so they could get away with bringing fascism back. He's a middle class 90s teen hacker who played phone pranks and stole secrets for the lols. His 2002 book is cited in the Wikipedia article. Chasing some threads to find its earliest usage and who by coined it should pin down the likelihood of this scenario.
The powers that be in 199x had no idea at all that those kids were going to become the future. They were the underdogs.

I guess? I do believe the world is manipulated by those who crave power. But figuring out how that works takes sampling from many various vantage points. From my vantage, coming up through that tech world being part ofits culture, seeing it change, power shifting (w my own sense of betrayals as it evolved), I feel I have some perspective about what I was & wasn't manipulated around. That culture once centered around sincere ideologies & hopes, and the fact that many of my hacker compatriots came out on the correct side of that seems to prove it. Hacker/early internet ethos reflected genuine utopian, anarchistic ideals, and I just think that those who craved power became something else... the techbros took away a different lesson from those times. (Esp the ones who became billionaires. This is terminology we're talking, "loading the language," and I just don't feel anyone in the position to name it had that foresight.

I've been on the edges of the hacker scene since the early 90s, & I'm pretty sure the current use of the term came about innocently. I was vaguely aware of the other use of the term at the time, but also had learned the other semi-related term"eugenics" by the time of the shift, which is more what I use in my head now.
There was this vector for getting into systems along social manipulation lines that needed a name, and of course it couldn't sound "soft" (like "psychological engineering," which is more appropriate). My sense is that the term arose organically. I could be wrong because of course I don't know what I don't know, but it *felt* very grassroots from being adjacent to that community. Today, "social engineering" by this definition is a legitimate subset of information security, basically getting someone to tell you the things you need to break in.
Just some data points from my position in reality. I appreciate you reminding us of its original meaning though!

Wow this came at a good time for me, and I related strongly to many voices in the article. Writing alt text descriptions is good practice for writers.
Think about it. You reader can’t see what you’re describing. So you need to capture what conveys the meaning you want to get across. It’s the exact same skill, and will help you understand aspects of the descriptive process like choosing what to focus on.

That said, Friedman was a proponent of the negative income tax as a form of UBI. The core of Capitalism isn’t capital, it was supposed to be competition, and UBI places those competitive pressures in the hands of workers.
(Not that I’m defending capitalism. But that Friedman would be in favor of a UBI solution to some of these crises.)

Elton John might have been the first celebrity — or person, really — that I was aware of as being gay.
It wasn’t like he was out. Nobody was. And it wasn’t like people really *talked* about it. Everyone just knew. Sometimes someone might mention it very quickly, in speculation or in a quick joke (not mean-spirited) or vague reference, but it wasn’t a big discussion in most circles.

Watching this movie helped explain why Elton John’s love songs always give me both gay and het vibes at the same time.
I thought it was because Elton was writing lyrics to men that he had to change to women because of society.
Turns out they were written by his very close bromantic partner, Bernie Taupin, who is straight.

When I worked in tech from 1996-2011, I resisted unionization for two reasons: I thought we were “too good” for a union (I’ve grown since then), and I thought the union would require more dues than was fair/doable and other annoyances/abuses of power. I didn’t like the idea of being forced to join a union to do my job, even if the union had gone corrupt. I somehow thought my employers above corruption.

This is the scene that I keep watching over and over. Hardcore Jungian imagery.
(Which resonates with me similarly to a similar scene in Bojack Horseman, which is also in the intro of that show, another I’ve seen that show two and a half times, and again, I don’t rewatch things easily.)
