Well I dumped the Hero's Journey after my first book because it was far too limiting.
And have since learned that it is, in fact, complete BS (that's apart from it being euro-centric, racist and sexist).
As someone else said, it's more an evolution.

#WritersCoffeeClub 3/12. Do you agree with Ray Bradbury: "Quantity produces quality. If you only write a few things you're doomed"?
Context is everything.
Bradbury was a working writer whose life depended on selling stories. Like many of the greats.
If you were in his position you would have to produce a lot of output, some good some not so much, to sell enough to live.
So he's 100% right.
However, quality is not a function of words per second.
They are completely unrelated.

#wordWeavers Day 9/1. Introduce your antagonist with as much sympathy as possible.
This month I'll be using my steampunk, slice-of-life, erotica novel "The Shape of Veronica".
"Slice-of-life" means there's no antagonist, just problems to be overcome. But most of those problems are caused by her parents. Who we never meet.
Having a disabled daughter, they hid her in a gilded cage.
Sympathy? At least they didn't put her in an asylum.

Never? I couldn't possibly comment, I haven't read every book.
But I have a series where the main character is not a hero and there is no villain.
And I know of at least one other series by someone else where that's true.
One is historical the other is SF but what they have in common is that they are slice-of-life.
The words Hero and Villain have vastly more symbolic baggage attached to them. It makes them less versatile.

However it wasn't me who made these comments, nor is this a personal attack.
Your answer literally gives the reason for using P/A in preference to H/V.
So there's no reason to use the latter because that combination does deny certain genres.

You can see from the responses over the last couple of days they contain inherently inapplicable assumptions.

Oh right, so where is the definitive list of what questions are allowed? (Sarcasm)
The point is it gets it wrong because the "two" doesn't match the pattern it expects, so it just throws away the most critical part of the question.
They're crap. They won't get better.
The more restrictions they put in place manually the worse the side effects.
Ask any programmer.

Writing Wonders Day 8/4. Share art, pics (face claims), and/or mood boards of one (or more) of your side characters.
MONSTERS takes place in a mid-apocalyptic Manchester (UK) and it just so happens the artist James Chadderton (a good Mancunian name) has created images (for sale on his website - he does other cities).
The city in the book is not as bad as shown but it's heading that way...
The other image is something I threw together because I had nothing.

Writing Wonders Day 8/2. How much do you know about your side characters prior to the 1st draft?
I'm a pantser - I've written a 100K crime thriller with a twist ending I didn't see coming.
I don't even know who the SCs are when I start.
But MONSTERS was planned to within an inch of its life, originally it was a TV series and scripts must be planned.
Which is to say I knew what every character *did*, but that didn't mean I knew who every character *was*.

Yes to bobbleheads (guilty but getting better), but no to more description.
Readers are not (should not be) spectators, they are active co-creators of the story, they add their own imagination. That's how they get invested.
Description is a good place to encourage them, personally I sketch outlines and let the reader do the colouring in.
I have been complemented on my great description (it wasn't me).

The Bechdel test is intended for movies and it's a bad fit for novels (as evidenced by the replies today).
You don't have to have a "certain number of scenes that conform".
(It only fits my books well because all MCs and most SCs are female, and they're not
MF romance.)
