None of the cultures I have lived in (of which there are a few) do not seem to have social protocols for how to respond when someone is facing a difficult situation that will not end quickly or possibly ever resolve into a good (or even neutral) outcome.
I was not ever taught how to be a good friend in that kind of situation, and I have rarely witnessed anyone else handle it well.

If a total cure were found for COVID and Long COVID tomorrow, my life would not "go back to normal", because I would still have to deal with having seen how people have treated the vulnerable (including me) in this era, and how people have revealed themselves to be selfish, ignorant, and willing to bring harm to others.

I have noticed a "tell" for AI-generated text: a paragraph whose final sentence begins with "That said, ..."), followed by a statement that, despite the sentence structure, does not contradict the previous statements.
As we drown in AI-generated text, I suspect that this kind of meaning mangling will become normalized and adopted in the general population (which doesn't care about language & thus doesn't pay attention).

Public Service Announcement: I went to school in three countries and I can attest that one of the easier ways to go "somewhere else" is on an education visa.
Tuition and cost of living may be wildly less expensive in some other locations.

Related thought: I guess now Signal app and any other encrypted message systems are no longer functionally secure if the person I am communicating with happens to be running Signal on desktop with Windows 11 / Recall / Copilot.
DAMMIT.

I almost approved an image in a project for work today: three girls, diverse ethnicities / skin tone / hair types, eye contact, smiling, subtext serves the project. They're even wearing masks.
Then I realized they are all wearing surgical masks. Ill fitting. Loose.

I explained I'm medically vulnerable, isolating in the pandemic, won't be a drain on the practice, just want to get set up in case something comes up.
Got all the way through the convo when the office staff told me I'd have to agree to come in for an in-person check-up once a year to be part of their practice. No telemedicine. No exceptions.

My heart says we need to build peer counseling training into mutual aid networks, because as far as I can see, current medical mental health support systems cannot scale up fast enough and are not accessible enough.

A great budget filmmaking trick for filming acts of violence is:
1. Set up the act.
2. Cut away.
3. Indicate the act has taken place with sound (gunshot, slice sound, creak of rope).
4. Show the effects of the act: blood spatter, kicked over chair from a hanging, shadows.
5. Bystander reactions.
The motion in step 4 seems to make a huge difference.
This saves time & money by replacing dangerous, complicated stunts.

I hope there are people in healthcare keeping journals that go on to be the "Dr Finlay's Casebook", and M*A*S*H etc., of this era. (Dr Finlay's Casebook was based on a novella written by physician A.J. Cronin. The M*A*S*H series writers interviewed and received letters from Korean war veterans.)

I needed cash for something so I phoned my bank the other day to explain I'm medically vulnerable so I'm in isolation in the pandemic, and were there any pandemic-provisions for getting access to cash.
The nice lady at the 1-800 number suggested I send someone to an ATM with my debit card and PIN.
Um... the bank told me to give someone else my debit card & pin.
Nope nope nopity nope.
*Telling story, not asking advice. Do not mansplain banking to me please.

I have a problem with a #Lenovo #Thinkpad T480 (running Win10).
Keyboard started randomly beeping a few days ago.
*At the same time* F4 key light started turning on/off at random.
Suspect these are related because of timing.
Have rebooted, cleaned keyboard, updated drivers.
I'm aware I can turn off beeps in bios. That's like cutting wire to turn off dashboard light: it's likely a symptom, not the problem.
Seeing fixes for each but not both together.
Does anyone recognize this problem? 1/3

A (male) friend suggested I could find info I needed using ChatGPT.
I gave him Chapter And Verse about why that was not a good idea. (Poor soul.)
We shall see if this friendship survives. 😂
I just can't with mindless tech hype. I don't pick these fights, but if someone in my life brings them to my door, I will engage & educate.
